I would LOVE to do a big Sierra On-Line Reunion video at some point, get ALL the big developers, designers, employees in one room reminiscing about all those classic games. What do you think? Who knows...maybe some of them would join Ken's new game company 😉
When you stop to think about it, makes perfect sense. They were always at the forefront in their time, adopting and adapting to new tech on the fly and pushing the boundaries and limits of what it could do. Glad to see that hasen't changed and awesome to see their passion for game developing just as strong now as it was then!
Anybody that watches us please keep in mind that these graphics are pre-alpha and also these are the VR graphics for the quest 2 also known as Meta Quest The Quest runs on snap dragon which is a mobile processor we have a very tough restrictions that we have to work with. I promise we will push the graphic to a higher level on the polish pass and push the limits of the quest
Roberta actually hit the nail on the head there. I personally find alot of AAA games these days look amazing but have lost something when it comes to design. There are awesome games today obviously, but i find alot of games prefer to tell you what to do rather than let you discover it. I bet this game will be full of discovery and yeah alot of fun.
This is beautiful. The fact that Roberta keeps saying the development is driven by "That seems fun!" gives me good vibes for this whole thing. Going by feeling and experience is GREAT!
All the best interviewers I've seen on UA-cam are like this, just ask a couple of questions to prompt the subject but then sit back and let them talk. Probably only works well if the interviewees are passionate about the subject, but that's also necessary for a good interview and is very clearly the case for Ken and Roberta :)
Sierra On-Line games have had an important place in most of my life and it's always great to see Ken and Roberta and how personable they are, and still doing well after all these years. It's a joy to see these OG adventure game designers getting into this project with the passion they still have for games and I'm looking forward to seeing their brand of VR adventure gaming! 🤟
Man please keep making more videos like this (alongside your existing content)! You're organically turning into the type of industry insight channel we don't have enough of.
I grew up reading the story of Ken and Roberta in the little Sierra catalog (10th Anniversary version), and always wondered what they are like. These interviews with them just make me love them even more.
It's so amazing to see pioneers still at it in their own genre, whatever it may be, so many years after first starting out and still showing the same passion for it, it's heartwarming in a strange way even though it's just what they love to do.
It is so lovely how Ken and Roberta are again developing something new and this time showing the way of the future 3D VR games. There is also something familiar in this design to the spirit of 80s.
I miss the old sierra games like kings quest and games like that. In the early - mid 90’s, my father, brother and I would spend hours on those games together. Good to see these two making a passion project together again!
I LOVE how the graphics have that classic Sierra/King's Quest look and feel. This is truly exciting stuff! SO happy to see ken and Roberta back in action. So much nostalgia and love for these wonderful people.
Start the campaign! To get all the old classics ported into VR. Quest For Glory, Space Quest, King's Quest, etc, into VR, nothing could be more brilliant. I pray this happens before I die! They were made for VR!!
My first computer game was King's Quest 5 with my brother. KQ6 is one of my favorite games of all time. I still play Sierra games now (Just played Space Quest 4 last weekend). It makes me so happy to see Ken and Roberta still have the passion to do stuff like this! Can't wait to support them!
Yeah this looks cool, lookin` forward to it .... and I particularly liked the descriptive narration upon arriving at a location, hope that there will be plenty of that as there were in the original text games
This is really exciting. These two are legends, and I'm sure I'm not alone that their work is some of my first gaming memories. Their passion is infectious and their knowledge and experience are huge. Also it's great they are developing for VR. Not only is the VR space as they rightly say fairly open and thus there isn't as much competition, but we actually need more good VR titles to help convince people to buy the hardware.
Jason, thanks for coordinating this interview with 2 legends of video gaming. I wish them much success with the new game and can’t wait to check it out!
I still recall her face on those german pc adventure games that I owned. I really liked that personal feel that it gave me. My favourites where kings quest 6. Space quest 5. But there were many more. I am looking forward to learn more about this new game.
This is so cool, they're like the grandparents of video gaming , instead of reading you a bedtime story the make you a game. King Quest 6 was my first PC game included in the IBM computer my parents bought back in the 90's i havent played a Nintendo since.
I AM SOOOOOO STOKED! I recently picked up an Oculus and with this news, I WILL be picking up this title. Sierra is iconic. Ken and Roberta are super people. I absolutely love them. Now, if only we can see a King's Quest port to the Oculus.... Hahahaha.... ((wink))
This is so weird, interesting and fun. I’m glad they are approaching it as a labor of love and keeping low public expectations. The OG computer game pioneers. So funny to hear them talk about VR and modern gaming, keeping the passion alive.
How absolutely amazing to see Ken and Roberta back in the game making business, even if it's temporary and for this fun side project. Their unique style of game creation and gameplay is so driven by design, imagination and wonder rather than the current model of "make it shiny with many polygons" and "fill it with fetch quests and collectables". It's a style of content creation that is just missing nowadays in favor of big business just wanting to funnel money out of the player. I wish we could inject even a fraction of their thoughtfulness and ability into the current generation of developers. Kudos to everyone involved with this project!
So many Sierra games were truly great. I literally just started playing Phantasmagoria and loving it. I will pre order this this game for every platform I have.
Who would've guessed that you guys would've started a great friendship with the founders of Sierra the company you always praised being so proud to have worked for. It truly puts a smile on my face 🙂
I ve also been following the development of Colossal Cave 3D in my channel and I am absolutely blown away from the energy and passion Ken & Roberta have for this new project of theirs!I truly believe the success of this game will open up a whole new post-Sierra chapter (Cygnus :p ) in their life and also ours!!Lovely video
Just so you know I just started watching your channel, and you are my go to every night when I get ho e from work! Absolutely LOVE your videos thanks for everything man!!!!
Man I idolized these 2 growing up playing every single one of their games. Sierra games, was always excited to see what they had coming next. Sierra games were the first games I played when I was a kid and looked forward to going to Micro Center in the 80's and 90's just to get the latest Sierra game.
I absolutely loved Sierra On-line. I was such a huge fan of the Space Quest series, Betrayal at Antara, Return to Krondor, 3D Ultra Pinball: Creep Night, Shivers 2, and so many more. Sierra basically defined to me the games to buy. If it was a Sierra game I would buy it and I became a massive gamer because of it. I think I missed Colossal Cave Adventure though, and I am all in on this one.
I'm there for it. I hope that the project succeeds. I remember playing Colossal Cave on a PDP-11, it will be pretty amazing to play it in VR, a real Holodeck moment.
Cool that these independent developers are out there making this happen. I can’t imagine the work and planning and organization that would go into this, and this isn’t some massive game development company doing this - just two awesome people with a vision. The American dream. I love to see that. I have not heard of Sierra games but I will have to look into them.
wow, cave adventure in 3d! The graphics look kinda dated, but it doesnt matter, since its an adventure game. Good old puzzles, still better than any modern copy-paste AAA games
Holy shit those flash back pictures of these 2 gave me such flashbacks I remember growing up seeing pictures of both of them being big into pc games in the 90s growing up
I'm sure they know they are entering a very different era then the one they worked in back then. I remember listening to an industry guy(one that did work on adventure games) talking about where did all the adventure games go and that the larger companies really just worked alot of the systems into modern games.
Very few teams out there like Ken and Roberta. Seriously, name a dev studio that’s an older married couple making video games! Super cool that MetalJesus was able to put this together.
I still keep wondering about how things would have turned out if they didn't cheap out and signed id Software. That to me was their Gary Kildall/MS-DOS moment, in that it didn't kill the company, but they could have had Wolf3d and Doom.
Those of you that might be curious about Ken's book that he mentions in the video, I just finished it about a week ago & it's very, very good. He covers their early days and the entire history -- rise and fall -- of Sierra, along with some extra chapters on his own design / work philosophy. In case you missed the screen in the video, it's titled "Not All Fairytales Have Happy Endings". It reads very easy and is absolutely fascinating. It's funny because nowhere at all in the book is there even a hint of an idea that they had any interest in making another game...yet here we are lol!! I hope this does well for them, and mainly is an enjoyable experience. It sounds overall like they're not doing any of this for financial purposes (after Sierra sold I think they were pretty well taken care of -- and rightly so), but seems they might continue doing it if it's feasible & enjoyable for them to do so. In the book Ken credited a lot of Sierra's success on their marketing strategy though...and it's definitely a vastly different landscape now, so we'll have to see how it is received.
This makes me so happy. Their games were such a huge part of my childhood in the 80s and I never would have been into games so early if it wasn’t for them. I have so much respect for these two, looking forward to buying their new game 🙂👍🏻
Our first computer, a second-hand Apple II+, came along with a handful of games on 5.25 floppies, including Apple’s own Adventure, which was based on the old Colossal Cave game. I can’t tell you how many hours I spent, how many scraps of paper I filled up, and how many nights I stayed up trying to beat that game. As simple as it was, it really immersed you in its world and created an experience completely in your own mind. What’s that old saying? I prefer radio over television because the picture is better, or something to that effect. That said, this new version looks absolutely wonderful and to have it presented to us by Ken and Roberta all these years later is a true gift to all of us who were pioneers in the world of computer adventure gaming in the early 80s. We’ve come full circle and I love that.
We are the priests of the temples of syrinx Our great computers fill the hollowed halls We are the priests of the temples of syrinx All the gifts of life are held within these walls
My mouse was hovered over the video and it started playing with close caption subtitles and instead of Metal Jesus it said Middle Jesus. Metal or Middle, this channel is awesome! Been watching for years now. Always grateful for how informative your videos are.
Considering that the game industry is even bigger than the movies one, I don't understand why this isn't everywhere on the news. This is HUGE! Sierra made digital history, this is going to be so exciting to follow! 🖤
Small observation, when you walk characters point of view in vertical direction should be smooth as it is in horizontal direction. It looks like it is following terrain instead of compensating for terrain changes like actual body and eyes would while walking on feet.
I'll play and see if I can identify what you are talking about. The video we've released is captured from the VR version. The capture process is funky and doesn't capture the experience of being in VR. It is depressing to see the video after having experienced the game. It's just not the same, and the overall effect is not in the same league.
@@cabokenw Watch video from 7:03 to 7:11. Large movement in vertical direction while walking on rocks is kind of OK if it was smoothed. Then when character starts walking down the slope the effect I'm referring to is more visible. Then you can observe it from 8:26 to 8:28 for example. These high frequency vertical jumps could be smoothed out, while leaving low frequency movement in there. If you think in terms of signals like sound, it would be something like low pass filter, all fast movement is eliminated but slow rises and falls are left intact.
I have fond memories of Colossal Cave, even though I only ever got to just inside the cave and quit because there was a troll or something like that just after the entrance to the cave, and I was lost as to what to do next, and afraid the troll would end my game, LOL! That's about 15 minutes of progress. It was the first adventure game I ever played, let alone text adventure. The biggest problem for me with that game was my memory, and I didn't feel like writing notes and drawing a map, but it was still a lot of fun even though I didn't get past the beginning.
Can't wait to try this on my Quest 2! Much love Jason. Thank you for sharing the behind the scenes with another two fascinating people from your personal journey. I love these kinds of videos.
@MetalJesusRocks growing up playing Kings Quest and Space Quest and being such huge fans of Ken, Roberta, and Sierra this is such exciting news! Also I have the IIgs version of Black Cauldron. I know the game itself isn’t rare but I believe the Apple IIgs version is. Anyone know how many copies of that game was released in the 80s.
Have never played VR yet, but this seems very interesting to me. It's amazing to see a game from that far back not only being redone, but redone to accommodate and incorporate the technology that is present today. This was a great video, Ken & Roberta are just such awesome and wonderful people.
Sweet, A Ken and Roberta Williams game for my VR setup! Glad to see it's also non-VR, those actually tend to be my favourite VR games as I only have a small space for VR.
Looks like Mrs. and Mr. Williams are going to make modern high-end hardware sell once more, with a lot of people still hesitant to go to VR this might be the game that wins those hesitant people over. I'm thankful that it doesn't require VR hardware, tho.
I would LOVE to do a big Sierra On-Line Reunion video at some point, get ALL the big developers, designers, employees in one room reminiscing about all those classic games. What do you think? Who knows...maybe some of them would join Ken's new game company 😉
I think yes!

That would be great for ...humanity!
Id love more videos like that
Tell them, they're either with you or against you....mwahahaha.
warms my heart they were pioneers from way back and their next game is adopting VR bridging ol' school to as modern as it can get.
Sierra was ground breaking back in the day. They practically created the adventure genre.
Inspiring!
Lords of the realm 2 and lords of magic!!!!!!!

games are indeed usually better when designed by players instead of focus groups and marketers
Fantastic video. I absolutely love the way you interview. You let them have the stage. It makes everyone you’ve “interviewed” seem comfortable.

The biggest problem for me with that game was my memory, and I didn't feel like writing notes and drawing a map, but it was still a lot of fun even though I didn't get past the beginning.
METAL JESUS! It's Kool to see how the Sierre game developer's evovled! You can genuinely see the excitement on you for this game!
Ken and Roberta's games helped shape my childhood, I am so happy for this.
Metal Jesus making Friday go by quicker.
Crazy creative couple. Respect.
Gawd, 40 years later, I still have such a crush on Roberta Williams.
thanks for this video... had no idea this game was in the works... on the mailing list for when it is released.
Every time I see SIERRA I get hyped. Seeing DMP gets me even hypeder
I remember this story from the Netflix documentary so cool
i am glad these guys are getting back. I live in India and never knew that they were making another game. I would def buy the game.
How much would it take for them to push a dev to remaster their scarface game
Looking forward to giving it a shot. Hopefully their passion converts to much success!
Congrats to Ken and Roberta on 50 years of marriage!
Very much looking forward to this. I owe my career to these people. For me, it all started with Space Quest II.
Have never played VR yet, but this seems very interesting to me. It's amazing to see a game from that far back not only being redone, but redone to accommodate and incorporate the technology that is present today. This was a great video, Ken & Roberta are just such awesome and wonderful people.
This is pretty awesome. I’m happy to see them so excited about this game.
Sweet, A Ken and Roberta Williams game for my VR setup!
Glad to see it's also non-VR, those actually tend to be my favourite VR games as I only have a small space for VR.
Got us ourselves some Legends right here.
My first time hearing about it. Thank you!
I hope we get more game developers that take things this seriously. Seems a lot of devs are kinda lazy these days
I've been waiting for you to do the video on this since I heard the news! So awesome
Looks like Mrs. and Mr. Williams are going to make modern high-end hardware sell once more, with a lot of people still hesitant to go to VR this might be the game that wins those hesitant people over. I'm thankful that it doesn't require VR hardware, tho.
