This guy is awesome! One thing I just noticed, the new chip credit cards look identical to SIM cards; the chip is even positioned in the same place as the one on a credit card.
Thanks Adam, well if you don't get the contacts lined up exactly right the phone wont be able to read the SIM and you might get a check card or insert SIM prompt.
Very good, educational video. I always thought I never could put a modern micro SIM in an old cellphone. After this video I am going to try it with my old Motorola Micro TAC 5200 International.
Done this trick many times for my old GSM phones too. Interesting to know you were at IBC Amsterdam. I was there in 2001 as an exhibitor for Teracom, Sweden. Was there all week, a really awesome show !! What was really great was all the exhibitors on one night were treated to a special party night. Wow, was fantastic, all included food, drinks, live shows, disco.... They were the days !
+Chris Lumsden Oh I was there for most of the week this year. I've been a few times now as it's the best place to score good deals direct with suppliers and manufacturers for video editing/production equipment. I missed the party this year as I was abroad somewhere else. It was really nice for people to come up and say hello even though nobody knows what I look like!!
+Olli Jokinen Yeah...read my bit about all the apple products that were given to us a few years ago that never worked....below. really poor product...and yet so many people are brain washed into thinking they are that good. it's just clever marketing.
Yeah I really am not an apple fan because out of 9 apple products that I have been given personally 7 of them didn't work or didnt work as they should.....that is in my opinion downright appaling!!! I never understood how someone would queue outside an apple store for a whole week in a tent just to buy an apple product!!! thats lunacy!
My youngest daughter causes too much trouble with ANY modern phone. A brick phone is perfect her, so all she can do is call or accept calls. This is just how we handled her cell phone addiction problem.
Hey man! Looking to buy one of these. Do you sell them? Just want one to work and make calls. I spend too much time on social media, need to limit my time and this thing will work drastically! Lol.
Hi what 80's brick phones do you recommend for a 2g sim card in the uk? or would 90's brick phones be better? Have you converted an 80s 90's Car phones to a mobile phone? cheers
I have an extremely rare "car" phone. So rare, i have not been able to find any hit of it anywhere on the web. I am going to be making a video discussing putting new phone internals into it along with a battery and new antenna setup so that it can be mounted to my 1979's van's center console. I think it would be so rad to have a vintage phone actually working using an old form factor. I have some pre-turn of the centry phones I will also be doing the same for.
Hey man this may be a stupid question but I was wondering if it is possible to use an old brick phone today if it has a sim card in it? I'm in the U.S. and I have been told different things from different people but I sadly don't have an old brick to test it.
+UraniumBullets No thats not a stupid question at all dude. It is possible to use an old brick phone that takes a sim card. if you are in the USA you are very limited though as there is only a handful of models. check out my video about the microtac select 2000, 3000 and 6000e. they can still be used anywhere in the Americas. Also the startac 7000g and 8000g will also work on american GSM1900 like the 2000, 3000 and 6000e. I have all of these and have recently used them in America on trips over so I can 100 percent vouch for that. who is telling you different? do I know them?
Cool stuff. I have a Motorola International 3200 working fine, but they use a small SIM anyway. Good to see you have an old Telstra full SIM card too ! But the days of using GSM here in Australia are numbered. Telstra & Optus will close GSM service here within 2 years. Vodafone has not announced any GSM closure plans yet, but would not be surprised if all GSM here is gone in 5 years time. Then will have to get OpenBTS running instead !
+Chris Lumsden Ah dude....the day GSM gets switched off will be a sad day for me. I will probably have to pay for some brick phones to be converted when the day comes. Why is australia wanting to swich off so soon. they are going to loose out on all the revenue from roaming international visitors on their cellular networks.
+Vintage Cellular Mobile Phones +Vintage Cellular Mobile Phones It will be a sad day for me too. I will not be able to use my car phones anymore. I also don't want to upgrade from my Motorola RAZR V3. Btw- I didn't know you can convert brick phones.
Oh you can convert them but it's fiddly to do and the phone won't be certified as safe by the ETSI board because it hasn't been tested for radiation and SARS and all that stuff. Also you have to be real good with surface mount components and soldering so it's not everyones bag. But if I can pay someone to do it then it's all good.
Question I want to buy some of those cheap modern knockoff brick phones from wish to use as a doorbell phone with the bluetooth. Do you think it is possible with something like a woox doorbell or any other doorbell with wifi/phone support maybe a Google nest doorbell?
Hi, I just bought myself a Motorola 7500 and tried H3G sim but didn't work, is it because H3G doesn't work 2G or I just made a mistake making the card? also is it possible find replacement lithium batteries for 7500 and mr601? thanks
I reply to myself, I was using the wrong provider. only o2 and Vodafone have 2g 900kHz so now it's working. I still want to know if someone make lithium batteries for moto 7500 or similar. thanks
OK the motorola international 7500 (and 5200, 6200, 7200 and 8400 amonst others) all operate on 2G GSM900. I don't know what country you are located in but I will assume you are in the UK as you 've not said otherwise. In the UK H3G or (three) operates on 3G 2100 as well as 4G obviously. The 7500 is incompatible for two reasons. Firstly H3G 's network is 3G (3rd generation) as opposed to the 7500 which is 2G (2nd generation) and also H3G operate on 2100Mhz and the 7500 will only work on 900mhz. The G's is a technology incompatibilty and the Mhz bit is a frequency incompatibility. Hope that makes sense. Lithium Ion bats for 7500 or MR601 are very hard to find....I and some of the other elite collectors normally snap them up for top money because they are the only batteries that give you a decent standby time on a 7500 or 601. If you just want to play with your phone then a NiCd will be sufficient but if you want to use your 7500 or 601 as your main daily phone then a lithium is kinda necessary. They usually go for about 100 to 120 pounds between us elite collectors (1000 plus phones) but you might be lucky if none of us are paying attention to find one. Alternatively of course I could let you know next time I'm selling one....but lots of people have asked.
Wait, so any sim card can work with these, so long as it's fitted with the card? I don't know a terrible amount about these phones, but I do know most phones now a days have a lock on them, was this the case with the old Motorola's? If I could put an at&t sim card into one of these phones I would terribly consider using one instead of a smart phone
+Chris Lumsden Oh ok. I shall have a look. I'm on tour at the moment so not always online. If you want to attend IBC then just go. You can register for free entry if you do it early enough....or of course you can pay for a gold badge. Kinda depends what you go for - I went to score some good deals with manufacturers.
+Robin Nelhams Depends what you want to use your brick phone for. If it's just for a prop and youre not worried about weight then get a big breifcase phone. If you're wanting to carry your brick around and use it daily then maybe something smaller like a microtac or a small transportable. Depends what country youre in too as to what phones you can still use.
Hi a really want a Motorola brick phone that works with a new SIM card I believe a 3200 GSM will work in Europe, I’ve searched Ebay but no joy, do you sell them with a charger etc
Now we won't be able to do this because the phones must have voice over LTE/ voice over HD. And of course no ATT unless it is a device on their whitelist.
+Gud Shit Inc. I can't say I've ever heard of that particular model of audiovox phone. It's likely to be an AMPS model as audiovox only ever made non GSM phones to my knowledge. I don't advise tampering with any phone on an electronic level.
+Robin Nelhams so for any where in europe you could use something like the motorola microtac M301, MR1, MR601, 5200, 7200, 7500, 8400, 8700, 8800 or 8900....so you're spoilt for choice really. If you're wanting a nokia then go for the 2010 or the 2110i.
Thank you for saying apple is shit. I am in the amaracas. I pretty much have all smart phones. Al smart phones i have have android. I want to get my hands on an old brick phone.
+Evan Starnes Well I got given about a dozen apple products over the years through work contacts and as promotional gifts and marketing samples....most didn't work out of the box and the replacements they sent weren't much better! they usually didn't work either.....you'd think they would test the ones they sent out as marketing gifts at the very least! So I choose my words carefully when comment strongly on a product....and based on my experience with Apple products (iphone, iphone2, iphone3, ipad, ipod & ipad2) I am not impressed. If apple want to send me something that works through my work contacts then I'm happy to re-evaluate. Until then my opinion of apple products is based on my personal experience which isn't great as mentioned in my previous lengthy comment explaining why. What kind of brick phone are you after?
Agree! Yeah, Apple SHIT!!! LOOOL I just went on Ebay and bough any Full size Sim for less than £1, ask seller if Credit Card size, pop put the size you need from new Sim, rem not to pop out the complete Sim! and just insert your Sim :-) I just popout the Micro Sim.

"Apple is shit anyways" Ha, I liked that part! I agree with you on that. They are very overrated.

@@BrickCellphones you still on yt?
I’m from America and I think it would be cool to use a brick phone for everyday life any tips? I don’t even know if it will work
i want a brick phone so bad
They are easy to buy on ebay
Those are rare
In Finland the prepaid sims come with the creditcard sized popup sims. I am glad they have not started to shift out from it to save plastic.
well, this isn't what I was searching for, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
What and AWESOME intro!
What would the benefits of using a brick phone today be versus a newer smart phone

I have an extremely rare "car" phone. So rare, i have not been able to find any hit of it anywhere on the web. I have panasonic Eu2000 but only working with any old SIMs versions.as i know its due to SIM voltage .
Do you have any way to fix this issue?
