Hi Terry I have bought a 706 and just watched your video. I notice on your video you have a red lead going to T8 which I haven't got on mine will that effect my conversion.
Even as a telecommunications technician I didn't realize how different US and UK phone lines are. A phone line here is only 1 pair of wires. Signal and power are shared on that one pair. I've not heard of an old phone here effecting broadband speeds. I don't think the standard for analog phones here has changed in decades.

Hello Great clear well made video. I just wanted to point out that you haven't actually changed the Ren value with the resistor. The blue lead from the bell coils needs to be on the terminal on the left side and at the end of the resistor. The way you have it connected means the power is not going through the resister at all. That resistor looks like it is a 3k3 ohm (3300ohms), as the colour bands are orange, orange, red. You refer to it as a 330k ohm (330000 ohms) which would be orange orange yellow. A slight difference of 100 times. 3k3 does seem a bit high. Can you confirm?
+paul hunter If you didn't do this to the phone and just fitted a modern socket then it would affect your broadband speed so you need to do this so you still get full broadband speed.

Martin the Bakelite phones can be converted in the same way. the old GPO phones connected the bells in series and the coils where 500 Holmes so each phone bell impedance was 1k allowing 4 phones to be connected in series. the new system connects the phones in parallel so the sounder or bell coils are 4k impedance so when 4 phones plugged in overall impedance goes back to 1K that is why you fit the shunt resistor. without the resistor the impedance is below the 1k and that is what affects your BB speed.
