Quite possibly the greatest song ever written! Flawless start to finish!

I’m not always the biggest fan of LaBrie’s vocals, but this song is a spectacular success. “Supper’s Ready,” by the way, is a highly regarded 1972 prog epic by Genesis, about the same length as this track. Necessary listening to understand where bands like DT are getting their inspiration, and one of the keystone songs in the whole prog genre.

They have the ability to control time with their music

The last electronic sound is the beggining of the starting track of the album "The root of all evil" as the track finish with the lyrics "This story ends where it began".
The lyrics of this song are about them as a band, the part you hear "Lucy in the sky with diamond" refers to their influences (movies, books, music...).
The concept of this album is impresive as it is really a full circle, fist track starts in F and then the second it's in G... and so on to Octavarium that it is in F completing the circle.
Time signature is also changing from 1/8 to 8/8, panic attack that you have reacted it's the 5th song and it is in 5/8.
Musically may not be the best DT album, but all this concepts makes it very special one.

Nice review of a very underrated song. It gets better with more listenings! I think what draws me to this song a lot is the ability to see and feel different stories from the same music, and none of them are wrong

After 30 years in listening music and making music, this song is perfection. You can dislike in your own taste, or like it or what you want but the fact is that this song is a lesson in music that every single person should check and .. then think “what is music?”. For me Music is not a seasonal wave like we see everywhere. Music is a statement, a true love from the artist to all of us. Octavarium is all of the above.

The song 'Octavarium' was credited to the band (Petrucci, Portnoy, Rudess, Myung and LaBrie)... but the lyrics were split between John Petrucci (Pt. I & V), Mike Mortnoy ( Pt. III & IV - 'Full circle' and 'Intervals') and James Labrie (Pt. II - 'Medicate').
Mike Portnoy (ex-drummer) also sang some vocals on the track... He said the track (and album title) 'Octavarium' referred to the number 8 (This was their 8th album in 2005) as in 'Octogon', an eight-sided figure...
The way 'Octavarium' was composed by the core of the band (guitarist John Petrucci, keyboardist Jordan Rudess and drummer Mike Portnoy) would put ideas together, and singer James LaBrie would add vocal melodies to the music... John Myung (bass) was not actively contributing musical ideas anymore, likely because of a strained relationship w/ Mike Portnoy (James LaBrie recalled that after Portnoy quit Dream Theater in 2010, John Myung was suddenly putting his ideas forward again...) but the band jammed on the songs until they were ready to record.
Mike Portnoy and John Petrucci were the main producers since 1999, and members felt that Portnoy was very opinionated in what the band would and would not do musically... Portnoy was very active and was always the band's 'musical director' in a way...
In later years, Dream Theater did not want Mike Portnoy to leave the band, but once Mike Mangini (drums) joined in 2011, the band felt more open to new ideas and felt that Portnoy had way too much power and say... It worked well for decades, but creatively, it was frustrating at times... especially towards 2009. Even Mike Portnoy admitted that working w/ the same band for decades was becoming too routine...

fun fact: the album leaked on file sharing platforms before release. the leaked version of this track doesn't end with the piano note and synth, but with the flute melody from 5:36.

The person in the story has awakened from a coma after 30 years only to fall back into a coma. Even though the doctor tried to help him, he slipped back into comatose.

It has nothing to do with a coma. It’s a catatonic state. Different thing. It’s from the movie Awakenings staring Robin Williams and Robert DeNiro.
