I, too watch the toaster, when I was younger (like maybe...7?) I was watching it and wanted to touch it but I *knew* that wasnt a good idea (smart 7yo), so I had the *brilliant* idea of taking something else, touching the red bit with THAT, then touching it, so I could feel the supposed heat by proxy, (great? plan?). Guess what I took as my proxy finger? A butter knife! That's when I learnt about fuses, fuseboxes and electrocution. Good times.
Over 20 years later, I just watch the glowy redness and when I get the impulse to touch..I remember...

The trick with cooking a cake in a rice cooker is to use it like a bain marie. Put water in and then the cake in (in a seperate pan!) because the water will stop it turning itself off. It's to do with sensor detecting when the bottom of the rice cooker gets over 100 degrees celsius. If there's always water in the bottom, it won't get oo hot and will stay on. At least, that is what I have been told by rice cooker expert Uncle Roger!

Back in college my friends and I would take the waffle batter at the cafeteria, mix in various toppings and cook it in the microwave to make a mug muffin. I don't remember all that we did, but we got it down to a science. It cooked quickly but it was also delicious and not like the cake you microwaved. I imagine the microwave cake got the consistency it did because of the heat distribution and the amount of batter (having egg in the mix could have caused it too).

OKAY so I have done mug cakes before, but made with cake mix I made from scratch. For this video, we used boxed cake to make it easy. SO my theory is it's either a gross boxed cake microwave thing, OR that it has to do with the volume of batter I tried to do. Because little microwave mug cakes are delicious!

I don't like the texture of microwave mug cakes (maybe because eggs), but I have a mug brownie recipe that's pretty darn good.
      Melt 2 T. Butter
      Add:
      A dash of salt
      1/8 t. Vanilla extract
      2 T. Milk
      2 T. Granulated sugar
      2 T. Cocoa powder
      4 T. Flour
Whisk it, and microwave for 1 minute. 👌

I used to do mug cake in the microwave at the office. One box angel food cake mix combined with one box any other flavor. Then I think 3 T of mix, 2 oz water and 1 minute in the microwave. Angel food mix is key because it has egg in it.
I have also done corn bread from a mix in the instant pot.

We lived in a tiny apartment after we got married and our oven died for over a year and all we had was the crock pot so I got really good at crock pot baking. The trick is to put a towel over it before you put the lid on to catch condensation so the top doesn't get wet.

Sorry if I am telling you what you already know!
But the reason food UA-camrs are doing less food content/food tips and instead challenge/gimmick things like this is because of UA-cam itself. The actual cooking/baking videos, like tips on how to make food, how to decorate, stuff like that, it just isn't pulling in the views, engagement, and attracting new subscribers, and UA-cam itself is not recommending those videos to people at all. Where as things like this, the price points, or videos about trends, those are giving Laurie and channels like her views and traffic flow. How To Cook That did a video on it a while ago that explains it better than I did, but it just sucks as yeah, many of us enjoy that content, I am sure they also want to create it, but if they want to stay relevant and make money they need to do stuff like this!

When I was a child, our oven did not work, so my late mother would make vanilla cake in a microwave-proof, donut shaped plastic container. It tasted better than what you describe, though, I believe it is because my mother did it so much she perfected to make it taste good with the texture. It brings back nice memories of eating the cake she would make, as a treat for school with a pastel coloured icing.

Fun video Laurie 🤭 Not sure I woulda done the toaster!!! Giant fire hazard there. My Mom in the 70’s baked cakes in the crockpot and the microwave all the time. My mom would use crockpot while doing other things. Not having to be tied down to the oven. I’ve used the microwave to “finish” a cake that wasn’t completely baked in the middle. And I make mug cakes in the microwave all the time. Chocolate cakes bake better in the micro than white. White cakes don’t come out with a very good texture. Too rubbery. But if you need some quick cake for cake pops/cakescicles, definitely a time saver. I I have baked cakes in my instant pot. But honestly, it takes the same amount of time in the oven. So not really worth it.

When i was a kid my mom used to make quick breads like zucchini or banana bread in the slow cooker. She used an old coffee can for the batter (i think with foil over the top for condensation?) and poured water around it. Always turned out really well. But of course its a SLOW cooker so it took a few hours.
Later on we found that they actually sold an insert just for baking in.

I've made cupcakes in an air fryer and mug cakes in the microwave but not the others. I'm surprised they all worked (except the dishwasher), even if they didn't always taste the best 😆

That was hilarious. So glad none of the appliances were harmed or I would be running in to you at Walmart again.

I remember my grandma baking cakes in antique 4 burner coal wood stove. It had a oven area in the lower right side

Usually there are instructions to make a foil sling for baked goods in the crockpot. Lifts out much more easily.

My mum uses her airfryer for literally everything, including baking. She'll sometimes come out with bread or brownies which she made while cooking main dishes on the stove 😁

I actually have a recipe for gingerbread in a crockpot that I've made before. The trick was using a coffee can for the batter, putting that in the crockpot, and covering it with a wet towel before putting the lid on.

I make cake in my air fryer all the time. It does get a little bit crusty on top but I kind of like it. I use half a box mix and cook it at 325 for 22 min

Cooking the cake on the stovetop reminds me of my dad talking about his granddad. My Dad loved the memory of him making cakes- making super thin layers on the stove top and then each layer would have homemade chocolate frosting. My dad always wanted to try to make one and sadly I don't think he ever did but I need to give it a try.
*I sound like one of those long intros to a recipe online lol
