I just replaced 9.9 1976 water pump and it was metal as well, kinda surprised and wondered if I should reuse it again but I decided I’d give the composite pump in instead. It’s a fun project
Fantastic as always Brandon. Reminds me that there is an old 18 hp Evenrude at my father's place that needs a little TLC. He bought it new in 1971 and it caught a lot of fish over the years but it probably hasn't seen the water in over 20 years.
Yup, sucks for everyone who owns one...resale value just went to shit. They're supposedly going to keep offering warranty support, though. Hard to believe that.
Unknown at the moment. I would guess so, as they will still be in business, just not making outboards. But then again, maybe not. The money made from parts sales has got to be quite significant; be silly to walk away from it.
I always love your 9.9-15 hp videos, and your rebuild 1-15 videos is my go-to for anything on them. I have a question, if you have a power head and attach a flywheel and compression test with a drill, any clue how different your values will be compared to when fulling installed and completed?
Nice vid. I'm starting to work on motors. Got a 9.9 evirude....almost complete. Picked up a siezed Johnson 1957 25hp for next summer. Probably unsaveable.
I’ve got to get back to Cali on the 21st I’ll start building then and after that about 2 weeks I’ll be back for the maiden voyage! On the Colorado near rotary or community park
BRANDON can I put an 84 15hp power head on a 76 9.9hp lower??? I’ve looked up the part number for the drive shaft and some other things and seems to match, but in your experience in differences is it possible?
Driveshafts are different. In 1984, they had 2 seals on the powerhead "crankcase head" and no driveshaft O-ring. You would need to swap that crankcase head from the 76 onto the 84 powerhead. Otherwise, it'll all swap over. Why do you want to do this anyway?
Hello, I am French and listening I find it hard to understand .. I have a évinrude fastwin 20 hp from 1972 which knocks and stalls when I lower the idle, as on your video .. should I intervene on the wealth screw? Thank you in advance for your answer. David.
@Fat Italian No, if I tell the accelerator, the idle is too high .. in fact the symptom is the same as on the video, there are duds at low speed and it stalls. Thank you for your reply .
Did you even attempt to run the 1st powerhead? I would have bet that your numbers would have improved substantially if you simply ran it for awhile to allow the rings and bore to mate up. You have a good engine now, but the last video on this left me with questions.
What is the lowest acceptable compression on a '94 60 HP Johnson? I'm in the mid 90's on all 3 cylinders and having some starting issues. Is my motor on it's way out? Thanks, love your videos!
Is that a 74 ? I don’t care for the low tension points and the driver coil much but they do the job ! You could have put a 15 hp carb on it and asked for a bit more ! Lol. I have 2 -1974’s 15 hp and 1 -1982 15 hp and they are really nice outboards , along with my many others ! Lol. 9.9’s and 15’s sell really easy here in Minnesota ! How’s the house coming ?
Two reasons. 1) because the problem was mostly fixed with a simpe needle adjustment. However, there was another, larger problem that 2) I wanted to make a video about. Plan is to show the odd issue, the theory, and the cause/repair. I just haven't done it yet.
I have a 86 johnson 9.9.ran like a watch last time it ran ? 10 years ago.bad fuel pump. is it worth anything? and i also i have a livingston 12 ft fiberglass cameraman that needs fiberglass repair. Not sure if its worth anything?
Just a comment, but, why don't you show, and explain the stripping/ repair procedures? Seems whenever you are doing something where a viewer could learn something, it's sped up, and seems it's not of any interest to you to educate people. An Australian guy, Dangar Stu, does a great job of explaining the process, and shows how. Think your videos would be heaps better if you showed more details.

I have a 1986 9.9 and the last time I replaced the impeller the little exhaust restricter plate fell out, now the thing runs really good!!
Neat video. I love that little boat. I”m sure you’ve heard Evinrude Outboards are no more. Brand was discontinued last week.
Man, I didn’t know that. I grew up with Evinrudes. Sad day.

What about old parts, will it still be available? Anyone know?

Actually Johnson is defunct the Evinrude E tech is still made by Bombardier company, makers of sea doo and lear jet as well as ATVs
Been a while since i watched your videos mate! They are still so fun to watch!

Thanks for another lesson i needed that Brandon
Great video! What kind of sealant gasket did you put before you replace the water pump flat plate? Thanks

Every great garage has a pub mix container LOL.
Good work.
thats a sweet test tank. were did you procure it?
Your going to be seeing me near rotary park there on a barrel boat very soon!
When?! Tell me more.

How do you get the idle speed to be low my timing seems way to high cause when I crank it up it’s going full speed instead of idling down

Wouldn't run long enough for that.
Imagine the knocking sound of a mid 80's dodge diesel; thats what it sounded like.
@@BrandonsGarage Right on, so you did attempt to run it. So it was much more than just low compression. Thanks for the update.

rossvanravenhorst as long as they’re even and above 85 you should be fine from my experience
Beautiful area on the water, roughly where is the location where the on the water video was taken?
Rotary Park, in Bullhead City AZ, about 5 minutes up river.

@@BrandonsGarage Got it, I guess I'll wait for the sequel for the fix.
I wonder what parts availability will be like since Evinrude is closing down.
That is my concern too.
But, they arent closing, they just wont be making outboards anymore.
If not some can start a evinrude parts shop and make big money
that bolt is ss the magnet will not work on ss bolt
You should invest in some thread chasers instead of taps
Excellent
did you sell or trade that 9.9?
Do you know where i can order evinrude/johnson parts, i cant find any dealers
ebay, amazon, boat.net, marineengine.com,
napa
Awkward like all the other videos but very useful thank you
Care to elaborate?
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Johnson Top 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Boat- unknown. But probably.
Outboards are always worth something. This one was $100. Seem to be the average going rate for a non-running outboard.
Where are you located Henry Cole ? If your located in Minnesota I’d be willing to give you $100 to $150 for it !
Evinrude gone . Got to get Merc now
Mercury gone a long time ago, all it’s small outboard’s are made by Tohatsu

That is simple, I have dozens of videos showing everything about the 9.9 & 15 HP outboards already, didnt want to do another one.
Have a 2009 Yamaha 85 hp 2 stroke will trade for a lamborghini , Hummer , 2 seater airplane , Hayabusa
I’ll trade you a 2002 Suzuki gsxr1000 that’s been sitting in my backyard since 2016
Done.
Some dirt tires on that bad boy and I'll be set.
