I love steak, but it is the last item i will order on a menu. What is the point of shelling out 35 plus dollars for something I can cook better at home for 15 to 20 dollars?
Especially since all you have to do to make even a crappy Walmart steak sear well is salt it, wrap it in paper towel and tin foil, and let it sit in the fridge for a few hours before it goes in your skillet
That applies to everything in your life? "Why should I buy candy when I can make it at home?" You can but it's a hassle. Also regarding the steak, maybe you haven't been to a decent steak house? I mean you should get a real decent one for that price.
You can out cool Out back Steakhouse at home, but you're not out cooking a trained chef at a proper high end steakhouse who does this all day, every day, and has ingredients and techniques you aren't even aware of. As the other person commented, up your game out of the average places and try some high end ones and you'll enjoy a new appreciation for a really good steak.
My local Texas Roadhouse is routinely the busiest restaurant in the area, and that entails a lot of places. They even bought the closed Long John Silver's next door and tore it down just for the additional parking. They're not hurting for business at all.
I haven't watched the video yet, but after reading the title I was thinking, "Someone should tell the three steakhouse restaurants in my town about this." All of them are busy, everytime I go by any of them.
That's cuz Texas Roadhouse is actually worth going to, you can get everything within $30 while other steakhouses charge like $8 per side because the steak doesn't come with any.
Texas Roadhouse positions itself as a value steakhouse. It's a lot more affordable than the competition. Modern MBA did a good video on how it works a while back.
Or make it at home. Steak is not an upscale food. It is very easy to do at home on a $150 grill with some charcoal. Or in a cast iron pan. I have had very few steaks at restaurants better than I can make at home.
Want to know a weirdly good steak? Waffle House. According to my father and sister, it’s not the best cut of meat but it is tender and well seasoned. They said this after going to an expensive steakhouse. Granted all steak is generally about how you cook it, but they like their steaks medium well and Waffle House could so it without making shoe leather.
Yeah, that, but for some, like me, I just got....well, bored of them, so went to 'unique' locations, some local, others, well, while rare, I was actually willing to drive 50 too 100+ miles to try some location I saw when I became a diver, or, just go to a Publix or some place called 'Hitchcock's' it's a grocery place in Palatka, FL that often has really thick steaks, affordable, go to another place that's....not sure if it's a local chain or not, but called the 'tea and spice exchange' buy some of their blends and just cook at home.

In regards to that robbery that was mentioned in this video with the Ponderosa manager being killed (Vanessa Wells), after reading court documents of a 2019 appeal, apparently the proceeds from the robbery were $275, which the two killers (Lozier and Widener) spent the next day at the mall on a movie and food. They then went on with their days afterwards for 5 months as if nothing happened until they were caught. Widener, the one believed to be the gunman, was released in 2016. Lozier, at the time of the appeals documents, had a anticipated release date of March 2024 (so would be out by now). It's incredibly vile for any person to be murdered but it's just even more extra vile when you picture the image of them sitting down eating food and watching a movie that they deemed was worth someone's entire life. I've got a pot roast that's going in the crockpot in a few hours, but for some reason I'm craving a decent steak. I group steakhouses into three categories: big chain, big budget, and buffet. I regularly ordered burgers and chicken sandwiches from the "big chain" Longhorn next to my former employer, as they were sadly the cheapest option in the area, but their steaks were just too pricy for me, so of course I'm not going to the likes of "big budget" Ruth's Chris. The buffet, with their cheap but still tasty all-you-can eat steak and more is my preferred option. Golden Corral seems to be doing okay, but I miss the heyday when Ponderosa, Bonanza, Western Sizzlin', Ryan's, Old Country, and other restaurants were thriving.
The British were long referred to as "Beefeaters". A mocking title that still lingers in reference to the Yeoman Guards, to this day. Dan Blocker died and never retired. His character Hoss was the first time a real life death lead to the character passing in the series. He is also the namesake of Hoss's Steak & Seahouse.
I recall the popularity of Sizzler and Ponderosa in the 70's-90's as a child and young adult. In Chicago we had a famous steak house named Ronnie's. The burgers were really good.
Apart from Ruth’s, all these steakhouses are roadkills. I learnt to make steaks at home and save thousands. So easy to master a steak 🥩. Got tired of getting ripped off at steakhouses and with grills like schwank and Otto no need to go to a steak house ever.
I think the internet and the explosion of home BBQ cooks have had a lot to do with it. Steakhouses are absurdly expensive and it only takes a little skill to do it yourself.
The last time I was in a steakhouse, was probably 40 years ago. They sold cheap cuts of physically and chemically tenderized meat. You were way better off buying a steak from a grocery store and grilling it yourself. The salad bars were disgusting. Don't get me wrong, we probably ate at one pretty frequently, but after a while it became... old, and we just stopped going. Maybe they got better, but we found other places to eat...
My best friend lives in Como Mississippi, the amount of google reviews for the steakhouse on the tiny main street outstrip the population. Absolute amazing place, good service, great atmosphere and a fantastic dessert. Most chain steakhouses can't beat the energy the tiny places put out.
One thing not mentioned is the rise of not only Food Network, but also UA-cam, and social media hosting content that shows you not only how to do it, but multiple new ways to do it, and therefore encourages people to cook more at home.
When Gordon Ramsay showed how easy it was to make a perfect steak at home with a $20 ribeye from Kroger, I knew I'd never use my Outback reward's card again.
When I discovered Cooking UA-cam in general and Guga Foods in particular, it was game over for the brewpub near my place. Why pay $30 for a mediocre top sirloin or NY strip when I can spend $12 at Safeway for a choice-grade ribeye (or a bit more for a better quality steak, but ribeye's got plenty of good fat even at choice level) and make it perfect at home? Those videos (and some practice) taught me how to do it right every time.
As painful as the cost to eat out has become, at least it's helping us recover some of these atrophied skills in the collective consciousness. Paying for the overhead of an entire building and trained staff plus the cost of food that expires and needs to get dumped is not sustainable at the level of market saturation we reached before the pandemic. But that's the nice thing about markets, they'll always figure out where equilibrium is.
@@silvy3047 You're not going to get a ribeye at a restaurant anywhere near the price of it at the grocery store. $25 at a steakhouse is going to get you the worst steak they sell and mashed potatoes.
I haven't seen an Outback in a while, I actually thought that they were all gone. I guess Texas Roadhouse just has a stronger presence where I live, because there's two of them right down the street
I will say Outback practiced consistency until the bitter end. The first time I was served a piece fatty gristle masquerading as a filet, I thought it was a fluke. But it was the same at every Outback, every time I tried afterwards, until I just gave up.
BTW, pretty much ANY 'SK......' word in modern English is Skandahoovian in origin. Sky, skull etc. There are a lot of words starting with S and another consonant that are of 'Viking' origin.
In Russia, you can’t really find steaks in a normal meat stall, and only imported steaks in a regular supermarket. I would buy roasts and cut my own steaks when I lived there from 2013-15.
Brazilian-style steakhouses were brought into existence quite by accident. A roadside restaurant suddenly received an unexpected flood of customers and the place's owner - somewhat baffled by the situation - decided to serve his patrons by directly cutting chunks of roasted meat from the spits at the tables. People actually liked the innovation and started demanding for more. And the rest is history.
Lots of others answered that basically they're not a good business, you can make your own home cooked steak in like 5mins and for far less. Why would anyone pay more than double?
You should have mentioned that Texas Roadhouse is also rated as one of the best steak houses of any type in the US because of the quality of their steaks.
I like Texas Roadhouse. Quality has gone down a bit. Steaks are thinner and harder to get right at medium rare than they use to be a few years back, but I still enjoy it once in a while.
I live in Los Angeles. And at least here there is no death of the steakhouse. There are tons of steakhouses here. And they’re all thriving. They’re always crowded. You have to make reservations and advance. So if they are dying, it’s not here. So I’m not sure what you’re referring to. I think it’s an exaggeration to say that there’s a death of the American steakhouse.
Bonanza was on the air from 1959 to 1973. The producer considered asking Pernell Roberts to rejoin the show, but decided it was time for that long running western to come to an end.
We actually had a Steakhouse that pre-dated Ponderosa, at least in my area, called Bonanza. It was identical to Ponderosa's "all you can eat steakhouse" model, except the food was just a little bit better; like the way Del Taco is slightly better than Taco Bell. 🔔 I actually never saw a Ponderosa Steakhouse until our local Bonanza Steakhouse closed...at which point Ponderosa bought the building and pretty much opened the exact same restaurant for another 15 years so. 😏🍴🥐🥩🏠🍖🌽🥗
It never occurred to me that people didn’t eat beef until recently. It makes sense. That would be too much meat to try to preserve. I can see just eating the leftovers after using the other parts.
We've got a Texas Roadhouse and it does decent business, but it's also right by the interstate. Locals all go to the independent ones around town which are all better. If you want kitschy fun, there's Pinnacle Peak, which has a whole faux western town around it, an antique carousel and a stunt show a couple times a night. If you just want a good meal, there's a dozen other options.
Sustainability in beef production is called into question by beef production, not climate change. The more quantity you engineer, the less time you provide for the land to turn around. It isn't hard to figure out. The Law of Diminishing Returns is a law for a reason.
Settlers moving west: "I hope we find some good land to graze these cattle on, because they're just eating through our supplies in these forests..." *discover Great Plains* "God be praised."
You’ve made a mistake with the premise. The title should have been “The Death of the American Chain Steakhouse.” The chain versions got squeezed between ordering steak at casual dining chains on the low end, like at an Applebees or Olive Garden, and a non-chain, upscale steakhouses on the high end. Starbucks, incidentally, is being squeezed the same way, by cheaper coffee from McDonalds, Dunkin’ Donuts & 7-11-type convenience stores on one end, and boutique, unique mom & pop coffee shops on the other.
Steakhouses cook mostly simple things that could easily be replicated at home for much cheaper. Far better value for the money to go to an Asian restaurant where most of the dishes involve unique produce and tons of pantry ingredients that would be expensive to buy up front and sometimes a pain to shop for.
People can't afford to eat out anymore - much less at steakhouses. The cost of 1 steak is more than an entire meal for two in the not so distant past. Not to mention the decline in service level.

Despite the fact that Royal Navy sought out cheaply available lemons (To stave off Scurvy), our American friends preferred to call the Brits Limeys. Limes? We wish! Have you any idea how expensive Limes were back then? It is quite the compliment. Thank you for that, you wonderful Yanks.
I live the Yeoman Guards’ uniforms, very regal.
And I totally love England and all things English
I’m a vegetarian American
Best wishes and cheers 🇬🇧🇺🇸😘
@@greta3315 How very kind of you. Thank you for your high praise. First off the bat, I have been Vegetarian since I was 6 years old, so 'tis grand to hear from a fellow Herbivore, especially an American. Bully for you.
It was tough facing ridicule from carnivores back in the 1970s & 80s, with constant accusations of single-handedly destroying the farming industry. Very ironic when Horse Meat turned up in Frozen Lasagna along with the Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy Scandal. Vegetarianism became vogue all of a sudden.
I have the utmost respect for North America's achievements during the Space Race. The First Nation on Earth Founded with no State Religion. You are the envy of the World for that alone.
Can you Imagine a peaceful Europe for 2,000 years without the burden of different faith systems and Monarchs, all fighting over the same god.
My very best wishes to you.
@@tomsenior7405 Good evening Tom. I am flattered and honored by your kind and gracious words. Thank you for your reply. I love my country but I have always dreamed of at least visiting yours. I’d love to, and maybe even staying, my dog and me. I wish

So, st Lawrence got grilled to death and they celebrated him by having bbq? 😅
It's not how I wanna go, but that's certainly the way to be commemorated! I wonder if my ashes can go into making a grill somehow 🤔
@ 😂😂😂
I’ll have a medium well St. Lawrence sirloin, please!
@@seanmontague8880 😂😂😂
Saint Lawrence is also the patron saint of comedy. After being roasted for hours, he reportedly told his executioners "Turn me over. This side's done!"
I don't eat animal products anymore, for health reasons, but, if you do, I will recommend Perry's Steakhouse and Taste of Texas if you're in the Greater Houston Area.
10:13 "after the reviewer -" was cut. what did they do?
Someone's not previewing videos before uploading. They forgot to reinsert a piece of edited audio.
Came here to say this
I’m guessing the missing word is “Complained”
I went to outback steakhouse for the first time in Australia, which was hilarious to me as an American. Surprisingly, it's really popular here.
They killed themselves by quality issues and being too expensive. I can cook a better steak with a good grill and smoker.
I miss weird history guy voice.
Couldn't be the fact that steakhouses are overpriced. 😂
you got the etymology the other way around. Middle English: from Old Norse steik ; related to steikja ‘roast on a spit’ and stikna ‘be roasted’.
And what is a spit? A STICK shoved through the meat.
My best friend lives in Como Mississippi, the amount of google reviews for the steakhouse on the tiny main street outstrip the population. Absolute amazing place, good service, great atmosphere and a fantastic dessert. Most chain steakhouses can't beat the energy the tiny places put out.
No milksteak?
no because that is a crime against food.
Boiled. And jelly beans ..raw of course..
Dan Blocker never had the chance to retire, he died while being operated on and had to written out of his role on Bonanza
Why would I cook at home for $20 when I can go out for $25 and get more food?
@@silvy3047 You're not going to get a ribeye at a restaurant anywhere near the price of it at the grocery store. $25 at a steakhouse is going to get you the worst steak they sell and mashed potatoes.
I've been to Logan's Roadhouse & Texas Roadhouse
I don't go to a a restaurant for some thing I can cook better at home.
I haven’t eaten a steak at a restaurant for a very long time because it got so expensive, I just learned to make it myself.
"...after the reviewer something the manager admitted the kitchen staff did frequently."
Ponderosa was the OG in my area.
We goin' Sizzler. We goin' Sizzler.
I haven't seen an Outback in a while, I actually thought that they were all gone. I guess Texas Roadhouse just has a stronger presence where I live, because there's two of them right down the street
Nah, there is still some around including the carolinas and the west coast
I will say Outback practiced consistency until the bitter end. The first time I was served a piece fatty gristle masquerading as a filet, I thought it was a fluke. But it was the same at every Outback, every time I tried afterwards, until I just gave up.
Come to Brazil, you'll find one around every corner...
Ironically, traditional Brazilian Steakhouses are disappearing in Brazil...
These steakhouses still do well in upper middle class suburbs. People in rural and urban areas do not have the funds.
Idk about this cause Texas Roadhouse & longhorn steakhouse is always packed even during the week sometimes.
We still have the first Sizzler here in LA over in Culver City. My goto when I want that classic taste.
I eat beef daily, but have not eaten in a restaurant for many years.
Oh man, I feel old for remembering these commercials!
Pacific Dining Car didn’t survive the pandemic.
Longhorn Steakhouse: a lesson in consistency. Perfect night out every time.
Getting a cast iron and learning yo cook my own steak (i prefer top sirloin) has been a game changer
Terra Gaucha Brazilian Steakhouse is our favorite!
Last time I went to Outback found they got machines cooking not humans cooking the steak
Glad to hear Fodo de Chao is still doing well
They had better be due to the prices they charge!
@@markdc1145 Damn right!
Hafa adai Lonestar! Love seeing Guam get a shout out :)
What brought them down was not their steaks, but the veggies, fish, fraud and trend.
Dan Blocker didn't retire. He Died.
Last time I went to outback my steak was so fkn salty I thought they were trying to make sure nothing grew in Carthage again
When I was a kid I thought chop house was where kidnapped victims got “chopped” by mobsters
You should have mentioned that Texas Roadhouse is also rated as one of the best steak houses of any type in the US because of the quality of their steaks.
How is the prime rib?
@@theodore6548 It's good. I am more of a fan of their ribeye.
@@anthonydintino6757 Thanks. We generally do steaks at home but it's just the two of us so having prime rib at home is not really feasible.
@@theodore6548 I had prime rib there a couple of weeks ago. I always try to get the end cut.
I worked at a Mr Steak restaurant from 1970-1975. We had great food and were always busy.
Almost dropped my steak when I saw Jollibee on the lists of fastest growing restaurant brands.
Steak houses in Waikiki sometimes require reservations a week in advance.
Dan Blocker never retired He died during the run of Bonanza. Bonanza started in 1963, Blocker died in 1972.
I actually never saw a Ponderosa Steakhouse until our local Bonanza Steakhouse closed...at which point Ponderosa bought the building and pretty much opened the exact same restaurant for another 15 years so. 😏🍴🥐🥩🏠🍖🌽🥗
Texas Roadhouse and LongHorn steakhouse are absolutely slammed everyday in my area of Florida.
I like Texas Roadhouse, but Longhorn is a little better. 👌
Fond memories of Ponderosa, the steaks were tough if you ordered beyond medium, we ordered them rare and were much tenderer.
Sustainability in beef production is called into question by beef production, not climate change. The more quantity you engineer, the less time you provide for the land to turn around. It isn't hard to figure out. The Law of Diminishing Returns is a law for a reason.
Settlers moving west: "I hope we find some good land to graze these cattle on, because they're just eating through our supplies in these forests..."
*discover Great Plains*
"God be praised."
Because nobody wants a to order a medium rare steak and it comes out well done.
Honorable mention: York Steakhouse.🥩🥩🥩🥩🥩🥩
Glad to see the chains fall on rough times. It doesn't mean the customer went away, the hedge funds do. Step up small business, we're hungry.
Steakhouses cook mostly simple things that could easily be replicated at home for much cheaper. Far better value for the money to go to an Asian restaurant where most of the dishes involve unique produce and tons of pantry ingredients that would be expensive to buy up front and sometimes a pain to shop for.
My favorite was always Steak and Ale. Their Kensington Steak was fabulous. 🥲😋😛
People can't afford to eat out anymore - much less at steakhouses. The cost of 1 steak is more than an entire meal for two in the not so distant past. Not to mention the decline in service level.
I expect Ruth’s Chris to be done 🤦🏽♂️
Aw, no mention of Ted's of Beverly Hills?
;)
