- A Vaillant Turbomax heat exchanger is blocked and causing the boiler to overheat. In this video, I unblock a plate heat exchanger. I use chemicals to descale it. This system will require a powerflush.

I've never worked on a Vaillant, but this model is very similar to a Bosch/Budderus I serviced over a decade ago.

I've been doing this for a while now, (15+ years, not solely breakdowns tbf) but I massively appreciate & respect your dedication to fixing a problem you encounter even when, on occasion, you get past the point of no return and it starts costing you money and time. We, (my brother and I have found ourselves in similar situations from time to time and despite the fact that economically the thing to do is to bail and move on to fight another day, we have often carried on until we get to the route of the problem, (sometimes more by luck then judgement admittedly). Primarily because we want to leave our customer happy with the issue resolved but also because we need to understand why we just spent 6 hours in front of whichever appliance it happens to be. Loving how you keep things simple and how you are able to remain so calm, whilst narrating and filming it all. Total class, keep them coming.

Another excellent video from the Heating Geek. Aww, Spirits of salts works every time! Expansion Vessel Checked and pumped up with foot pump on ALL combi boilers after every drain down, I also change the Grey rubber washer, ( front left of the Main heat exchanger ) this somtimes leaks when the diverter valve top nut is unscrewed. Vaillant P/N 981151 Pack of 10.

Fantastic! Both HeatingGeek and Dr Pipe put out videos in the same week on my favourite and arguably the best combi - the Turbomax Plus/Pro . My 16 year old Turbo still performs like new, and with occasional maintenance should get many more years out of it. Parts are cheap and readily available and most things (except expansion vessel ) are easy to change. You can remove the plate without disturbing the diverter. I undo the bottom left nut with basin wrench or crowsfoot if changing plate with diverter still in place. Interesting that you have a used Turbo to replace your Ecotec. Says a lot about these boilers and also a lot about modern boilers. Hope you get the swap on film when it happens. Thanks and please keep the videos coming. And stay SAFE!!

I was lucky that when my Vaillant Sine combi was getting tricky to repair (fantastic piece of enginerring, just too complex), it was 2004 when the Turbomax was part of Vaillant's current range of boilers. So fitted one and so glad I didn't wait for their next ranges of boilers. Just lucky I needed a new boiler at that time. A dog is for life, and so is a Turbomax ;-) Keep up the good work!

Great job 'GEEK' my thought was to clean or replace the auto vent and install a mag filter.
Agree it's an easy boiler fairly tough boiler, my favorite past boiler was the previous VCW242/282E.
Im not a fan of the gas valve and PCB on the older one and the diverter is a bit of a pig. I think Vaillant got it right with this job. :-)
Loved when u addressed the keyboard warriors. All the tips u give for example the main pipe popping off in the night and flow pipe in the heat exchanger twisting save all of us time and money. Where do I sign for patreon?

I am keen on protecting the environment but think that cleaning out a heat exchanger using chemicals is by far better than the drive to buy a new one and the environmental impact of producing a heat exchanger. Well done, good video

The customer was not covered by the insurance company for this repair. I always clean plates to get people up and running. I get paid the same to walk out or temp repair. The customer was aware they needed a power flush after my visit.

Hello mate, what size spanner were you using on the diverter valve nuts ?
I think? they’re 24 & 32mm open end Spanner Ollie has cut & taped. If I’m correct, Silverline, (I know, I know, they just make cheap crap tools) do a fantastic compression nut spanner in these sizes, it’s surprisingly good quality & shop around, you can get one for under a fiver!

Can you tell me, why one would get blocked plate HE even after installing a quality magnetic and Y type physical filter????????
Pre existing magnetite and poor quality water before fitting filter - system has to be squeaky clean and dosed with right amount of inhibitor otherwise dirty system water will progressively worsen

The physical filter holes are only 0.1 mm wide!!!!!!!
The derbies are around 4 to 10 mm wide and massive!!!!!
Both filters have been installed from the beginning .
Is it possible that they got trough the FLOW side by some kind of negative pressure force ??????
Because the debris was already inside the appliance when the filter was fitted. Or the chemicals used to protect the system are baking out of the water on to the main heat exchanger, then flaking off and blocking the plate. Also magnetic filters dont work 100%.
@@Han-es8qu Old boiler internals would have been contaminated I assume and not thoroughly cleaned, if the heating side of the system is clean and debris still found inside boiler :)

As I said it was a new installation of a Baxi Main combi boiler , every thing was new, but now 4 years old.
I have seen many boilers with several fancy filters and still plate heat exchanger was full of magnetite ?????

hi getting hot water when tap is quarter turned boiler kicking in and out when tap is fully open warm /cold boiler kicking in all the time slight noise from main heat exchanger the inlet pipe hot outlet warm
You need an engineer to come and have a look. If you have how did you get on?
@@HeatingGeek looks like a main heat exchanger needs changing very expensive £450 for part will need boiler replacing has it is over 12 years old.

Why pulling the plate exchanger out when if you would have installed proper valves with drain house connections could use a pump in the bucket to do the cleaning. Also should install dirt separator on that boiler. That was some powerful cleaning solution!
Too much faffing. `easy to remove and clean and refit. I can do this job in 1 hour.
@@HeatingGeek Oh Ok. If can be done that fest why not, Thanks for the reply . It would be a good idea to add some cleaning solution to system , then drain it and ad boiler protect solution after that. That was one filthy plate exchanger.

Hi, I work for one of the manufacturers of plate heat exchangers. We do not advise using Hydrochloric acid (spirit of salts) as it can actually cause corrosion. There are other weaker acids which can do the job such as phosphoric or oxalic and will not damage the heat exchanger.
Its not in there long enough. I have been doing this for nearly 10 years like this. Never had a problem. I know it will damage the heat exchanger if left in. Exactly what product do you recommend? I will try it out. :-)
@@HeatingGeek That's fair enough. Generally it will not cause damage if flushed immediately after as you say, however the heat exchangers are made to last and can last for 15 years if treated correctly. Using a strong acid will reduce lifetime from 15 years to 8-10 years. You probably won't see any problems as other parts in a boiler will go before this timeframe. I cannot recommend particular products for obvious reasons, but look for ones containing mineral acids such as phosphoric or oxalic acid. Even acetic acid will work (vinegar).
@@1991elliot For the job I do customers have 2 options. A quick blast with spirits of salt or a new heat exchanger. I get a fixed cost for my time so its very important (To me) that the job is quick. I will give what you say a go and see what works. Thanks for the reply. I will not forget phosphoric or oxalic acid. I have tried vinegar with little success. :-)

I hope not. But people were doing it before and will continue to do it now.
By the look of this, this sysrltem is in need of a good power flushing and maybe a magna clean since this is an occurring problem
YEP. But if a customer doesn't want to powerflush the system then what do you do??
@@HeatingGeek fully understand that but in the long run they just going to have problem after problem. All you can do is advise and if they dont take it then just keep turning up and taking the money to repair faults that come with not having a magnaclean and good power flush. Keep up the good work

I have 2 wet vacs but prefer a couple of buckets. I do get the wet vacs out at least once a week though. I have made more messes in customers houses with wet vacs than any other tool :-)

Yes. When someone commented on here. Pipework was clipped and the meter was fixed to the wall. I'm not worried.:-/

All these lot saying it needs a Magnaclean - obvious newbies. Magnacleans weren't even invented when this boiler was being fitted. Yes retrofitting one would be lovely, but its worked for 15 or so years without one, a new plate / cleaned plate will see this thing out till it dies of economic obsolescence. Why fit a £200 filter to a 15+ year old boiler it won't even be in the house in 5 years and the next boiler will probably come with one long as the installer is decent. I used to clean plates out in the decade before Magnacleans were invented and a well cleaned plate with a few hot flushes will last long enough for a boiler like this
Plates will usually last a while. Not always but generally at least 6 months and some I have had last 5 years after being replaced.
Try not to show everything out here on UA-cam because there are diy ppl or home owners who will start doing these job themselves even though they not gas safe and it just means gas engineers out there might lose some jobs not saying everyone will but try to not show everything because a gas engineer should know most of these stuff already.
