There is regrettably only historically inferred speculation - the closest thing to what the lyre of David might have at least looked similar to, is the horizontally held Canaanite style lyre, seen depicted on an ivory carving from Megiddo, but even this dates to about 300 years before the traditional time period of David. The notion of 'key' is a relatively modern Western one - in antiquity, string instruments were tuned to match the comfortable pitch of either the particular vocal range it once accompanied, or to match other instruments iplayed with it in an ensemble, such as the aulos.
Although we cannot be sure of the tuning, I would assume that the reference pitch would be A=432 Hz. Otherwise, it could not have soothed King Saul. Modern kinnors are often tuned to E harmonic minor or C harmonic minor, which has an ancient Jewish and middle eastern sound. Modern sound healing research has shown that a F note stimulates the Heart chakra and reaches emotions, and an F# note activates the High Heart chakra which is a Divine energy source. The C note is grounding, and a C# note brings the body into an Om state. With this information, you can experiment with your kinnor, to see what effects it has on your physical and emotional bodies, and on the people around you. *_The most critical parameter is the reference pitch of A=432 Hz._* You will find that more modern concert pitches, A=440 Hz or above, are more mentally stimulating, and not very helpful for driving out demons. It is also likely that ancient instruments were tuned to harmonic ratios (just-intonation) rather than 12th root of 2 increments (even-tempered). The even-tempered instruments, such as the piano, are compromises in order to allow one to play in any western key without retuning. Middle eastern instruments are often tuned to a variety of micro-tonal intervals, depending on the scale and mood chosen. And fretless instruments, such as the violin family, are typically played with just-intonation.
Actually another legend says the harp King David played was a "Begena",a kind of ethiopian harp that is said to have been brought to Ethiopia from Israel.Check out there are several videos on UA-cam. I guess no one can be absolutely sure about the kind of harp David played.or maybe he played more than one model!!
Excellent instruction, thank you. I just purchased a Marini Kinnor harp and your videos are very instructive on how to play it. Keep up the good work. Blessings to you. +
hey i wanted to say hello from london i got one from i think a similiar maker its the small ver of yours for 40 pounds lovely you play really well i gotta watch a few more times to learn thanks for making this its a REAL HELP! may g-d bless you
The only publication I know, is an instructional booklet made by Marini Made Harps in the USA for their awesome 10 string Davidic Harp (the lovely hand made lyre of theirs which I now play)
Any of the scales which are suitable for the full size version - please see the blog title on the Homepage of my website, "Ancient Lyre Playing Techniques" - one of the subpages in this section of my website provides all the tunings I have experimented with as well as how to tune a lyre in the jwonderfully pure ust intonation of antiquity.
Mine is almost the same. What do you think about the quality of the finishing of your kinnor? I have to admit I am quite disappointed with mine (in terms of aesthetic) : there is a blister here and there, the painting is not very regular, the tuning pegs are skewed or not aligned. Well, not a really good purchase... =/
How do you knnow when it's tuned properly??? New lyre player and I'm completely lost on how you know when it's tuned to a mode like you said...help please???
