Ivan the gorilla lived alone in a shopping mall for over 20 years (The Urban Gorilla)

  • From THE URBAN GORILLA. Produced, written & directed by Allison Argo in 1992 and narrated by Glenn Close, this award-winning film was a catalyst for Ivan's move to Zoo Atlanta. Though Ivan's story is sad one, it ultimately had a happy ending.
From Allison Argo: "When I first met Ivan, he was living alone in a tacky, low-end shopping mall. He hadn't seen another gorilla or felt the grass beneath his feet for over 20 years. I knew that I had to bring Ivan's story to the world in hopes of changing his life - and the lives of other gorillas like him."

Sam Iyam Since Ivan never developed any survival skills for the wild and sanctuaries have no experience in rehabilitating gorillas, a zoo was his best chance. Even PAWS agreed with giving him to a zoo. If you watch Zoo Atlanta's video, Ivan is constantly smiling.

Only people from the pierce co area from the 70's to the 90's really know about ivan. Most of the people on this thread are here because we visited ivan at some point in our lives. As a kid i used to take the bus to b&i just to spend time with him, and play arcades of course.

Alone for twenty years. No freedom or friend what a disgrace. What a stupid selfish person to have done this. I'm sure they had their lame excuses. Not to see the sky, trees or felt the wind on Ivan's face. I hope he was happy and found some peace with the remainder of the time he had.

    I was there.
    I remember him.
    I visited often.
All these years later it still saddens me.
It wasn't often he would be close enough to the windows to look in his eyes. When it did happen. All I could see was the deep bark sadness of a lost life behind bars surrounded by concrete.
The other animals were in no better shape.
Not sure if people can feel the mental state of an animal. But it sure was depressing.

I saw Ivan in his horrible cell in 1977-80 as I was stationed at Ft. Lewis, many times I would go and observe him, I was drawn to him some how and saddened by his circumstance on every encounter , patrons continuausly, tapping on the glass to get a reaction, I truly believe, the store owners were criminal for keeping this magnificent beast in such a horrible fashion, I am glad he found some happiness in Atlanta however fleeting his time there was, why man has been so cruel to his species is a mystery to me, and frankly one more example of mans ignorance , greed , self righteousness and ultimately our well deserved undoing.

I remember seeing Ivan at that mall once or twice when I was a kid. It's so heartbreaking now to see this video and realize how isolated he was, basically living in a prison. Bob Daugherty the anthropologist was one of my professors a long time ago (he insisted we call him Bob. Great professor, loved his class). He told us about some of the games and stuff he would play with Ivan, like tug-of-war. Ivan was obviously stronger than him and would humor him by playing weaker... sometimes using his feet instead of his hands.
Hopefully Ivan had a happier life once he was moved to the zoo.

Luis Gin Ivan was taken by the pet trade before he could be taught any survival skills. An AZA accredited zoo was his best chance because he wouldn’t be able to survive in the wild. Zoo Atlanta did a fantastic job taking care of him and he can be seen smiling.
I am also a zoo volunteer and we love our animals very much. We’ll do everything we can to give them a happy life.

Luis Gin you don’t know what your talking about. Many zoos take dedicated and great care of their animals and the animals are very happy. Unlike this cell animals in zoos live in great habitats. I’m from Northern Ireland and the gorilla habitat in Dublin zoo is massive. Zoos also are in the endangered species breeding program to help animals and before you say just set them to the wild they couldn’t go to the wild cause they were born in the zoo with no survival traits learnt from their mothers. So before you start saying dumb information on the internet that just isn’t true please educate yourself

I lived in Tacoma from 1982 to 1985. I saw Ivan whenever we went to B&I Mall. It always made me sad to see him all alone in a concrete cell. I remember there was a picture on the wall of Ivan as a baby and he had a plaster cast on his foot where he had apparently broken it. I doubt the Disney film even included that in their film, but I haven't seen it and I probably never will.

  • @Powerranger-le4up

If it hadn't been for zoos, Ivan likely never would have had his happy ending. Because he could not be released into the wild, an AZA accredited zoo was his next best chance. Because Zoo Atlanta had a place that was similar to the wild, he eventually became the silverback leader of the gorilla troop that lived there. If it wasn't for the zoo, he likely would've died much sooner.

Horrifyingly disgusting & beyond heartbreaking. 💔 These animals need contact with fellow primates, not humans through glass confined to a small space! Even more sad is it’s nearly impossible for Ivan to be moved to a sanctuary or another compound, so I give this guy a _very_ small amount of credit for _trying_ to keep a highly intelligent, wild, exotic animal “entertained”.

I wanted to dislike the video I first saw of Ivan but for some reason there wasn't a place to even leave a comment let alone dislike it. Ivan sat up by the glass not because he was social and like to be with people. In his memory, he remembered his 'human brother', who left him in the back of the store after three years as a 'family member'. He probably sat there waiting and hoping his 'brother' would come by.

I just watched the movie on Disney+ today and I’ve read the book and it’s just so sweet and sad. They showed at the end a bunch of pictures of Ivan, and the one that made me cry was the picture of him finally at the zoo looking at a flower. That was so sweet. I’m glad he got to live out the rest of his life in a happy place

Grew up near the mall. My parents were younger while he was in there an they would visit him. They told me stories of how sad he looked. The B&I is in horrible condition now and only being used as a black market really. But When I go to the mall I can still see the room he was kept in. it's just a sad thing to see really.

Skoodle I heard that it had gone bankrupt. Ivan did pass away in 2012 at the old age of 50, but thanks to Zoo Atlanta, he had a much better life. Their video even shows him smiling.

@@Powerranger-le4up It did go bankrupt, but it's still open an though there are fewer, there are still stores in it. After he passed Zoo Atlanta has been telling the story as if they saved him (which they were a serious help) But after being trapped in a room as small as a walk in closet for 20 something years, he was never able to adjust socially with the other gorillas. If you really look into it he had a sad life in and out of the small room.

Sadly that's not the only caged up animals they were so called showcasing, all throughout that store they had animals behind glass, I worked in the pet store dept in the 80's and it sickened me how little they cared, they had a Toucan that literally died from eating the wrong foods. I was so happy when the Atlanta zoo agreed to take Ivan to an outdoor enclosure. God bless you Ivan and thank you for the gentle memories ❤️🥰🙏

That has to be one of the saddest things I have ever seen. Living in a cement box. No mental stimuli. That is pure and utter torcher... I can't imagine how depressed and hopeless that beautiful beast experienced on a daily basis. With no escape in sight. I'm ashamed that I am a part of the human race that had everything to do with Ivan's misery. The only thing that brings me solace is knowing that he is in heaven. No longer experiencing the pain and depravity that us as humans caused him.

I too saw him occasionally when I was a child& remember when he went to a zoo allot of us were really happy about that. It's also sad that people have empathy for animals living like this but feel nothing for the 2M inmates in the US that live in allot smaller cement cells almost 23hrs a day& allot worse food, health care, and treatment. Nobody but mass murderers should be locked in cages all their life

Unfortunately the sad square of fake grass they put in just makes it more depressing and just sad to see. I am glad they moved him to a better place with other gorillas after this, it's nice to see that he could rest and be happy for his last few years on earth. just recently went to the B&I and they still have where they kept him and tons of pictures and newspapers clippings Even meet a old man who used to work there and told us some stories of Ivan, he was very loved by all who worked with him and saw him.
My parents told me stories of him as well, like how my dads judo coach would go in and help exercise Ivan, or how he would slam on the glass to scare you when you weren’t looking at him, I even heard a story of him as a baby getting into a birthday cake.
The movie should have been about all the people who loved him and all the stories they had with him. Everyone in puyallup/Tacoma was sad that he was sent to a zoo out of state never to see their beloved gorilla again though I guess it was for the best. R.I.P Ivan
