Just adopted a super sweet deaf boxer, and flipping the lights on and off to wake her up is brilliant! I felt so bad just shaking/petting her awake because she would jump every time 😰

I try not touching my dog when waking her up. Instead I tend to slowly lift her bed on one side to make her shift a little which wakes up 'more natural' and less stressed I guess. Also blowing on her has helped

@@olive4228 totally!!! Lifting the bed is a good idea, but we have been using the blowing technique as well and it works great

i always teach my dogs the one handed i love you sign. dogs aren't stupid. i have never had a deaf dog but i have had one blind dog and have one that is 18 years old and going blind. so i kelp the house the same no matter what so they knew a route to walk anywhere they wanted to. and not get lost CJ got lost in the yard one time he got turned around while playing and couldn't find his way back to the house. he was safe he was in a fenced in yard. and i would just yell and he would come running. and if he felt lost again he would stop and bark and i would yell again and he would come on up until he knew where he was. and what was more amazing was my golden retriever. caught on and she would go out and bark when she heard CJ barking. and most times she would go get him and bring him back. i sure do miss most them babies.

We just got an Anatolian Shepherd/Great Pyrenees pup. A few days later I discovered he was deaf. I've taught him a few signs signals already. It as been a small challenge but I've enjoyed him so much. I call him my gentle gaint. He has a kind and gentle soul. The breeder said I could bring him back but why would I? I think he has the perfect forever home. 💖

Thank you for that. I adopted 2 sisters and after 10 months, I figured out that one of them is deaf. The other one makes up for her. The challenge is incessant barking.

Thank you so much. We are looking to get a second dog and there is one on petfinder that keeps getting our attention. He is fully deaf so we have been hesitant but something is making us feel that this is our dog ♡

Dogs understand body language better than verbal commands anyway; use verbal queues to get their attention, but use hand signals at all ages.

I just adopted a puppy this week and I found out today he is deaf. I’m scared because I have no experience with training a puppy let alone a deaf puppy but we are going to learn together. If anyone has any advise on how to help potty train him that would be much appreciated! ❤️

Thank you for this. My little girl is losing her hearing pretty fast. She's at least 12, and possibly older than that. I came here because I hate how scared she is when I have to wake her up to move her. This was very helpful. Thank you!

My 15 year old black lab mix is completely deaf and I definitely do the hand signals and the stomping. Before I realized she was totally deaf I would be yelling everyday all day long no matter what I said. Needless to say I developed a very raspy smoker voice. I’m enjoying your videos, they are very helpful! My chihuahua mix has heart disease and tracheal collapse. That’s how I found your channel.

my senior dog has become deaf because of some meds for ear infection, the vets said it was temporarily but 10 days have passed, for now the good thing is that she is constantly sleeping without bother

I have an adopted deaf dog who has been deaf since birth.
I slowly introduced him to the local off leash dog park. It is a fenced area so it is safe. I use sign language (hand signs) he knows about 12 different signs.
I also have a collar, lead and harness with DEAF DOG on it so people can see it as they approach him.
I make sure people only approach from the front, stop let him smell them before they touch him. When he is sleeping, I will stand near him and he knows I am standing there.

I was curious, talking about dogs off leash, could you maybe train a deaf dog to be off leash if you used a vibration collar to call them back instead of their name maybe? Has anyone tried this?

This is very helpful. I'm very hopeful my husband and I can adopt our second dog soon and we think we found him. We applied and hope to hear from them soon to meet him. He's fully deaf so we are doing all the research we can to be ready. We feel he's the one!
