Hi Homemaking Friends. As you know, homemakers need to be prepared for many situations. I'm hoping this video helps your sort some of this out. Here's the link to Dr. Eye Health: ua-cam.com/video/GNgSPrUwu7k/v-deo.html. He can help with eye preps for emergencies.
Wow, I thought I learned a lot from my mom! You included things I never thought of - like supplies to shave a wound area before stitching - and the supplies to even stitch a wound! I have always had a Rubber Maid tub (slightly larger than shoe-box size) I take whenever I go on a picnic, fishing, or camping trip with family or friends. I just have to remember to check how old my supplies are . . . Since I live in the desert Southwest, adhesives don't last long. Putting that First Aid cross on the bag with tape is a smart idea! Many thanks for this very thorough tutorial!
Hi Denise I’m a retired nurse. You may want to look into Steri strips instead of suturing. Its safer, clean wont cause more pain for the patient and sterile. Im working on my bag, so your video is perfect timing. Thank you for all you do! I wish everyone knew your tips of home economics. ❤️
I thought I replied to this but it seems to have disappeared. Trust me, the last thing I want to consider is putting in sutures. I will try to use tape, adhesive, duct tape, or whatever to pull the skin together and close it. Putting in sutures is not something I ever remotely want to have to do, so yes, I agree with you whole heartedly.
Wow! I have an empty bag JUST LIKE THAT in my closet! I can take a lot of the emergency items in my pantry and fill this bag up! And the white cross is a great idea! Thanks, Denise!
Hi Denise! I love how you explained the difference between the home medicine cabinet, first aid kit and the emergency bag. One thing I would suggest to have in the emergency bag is an extra pair of glasses for anyone who needs them. If my glasses broke, I wouldn't be able to help anyone very much because my eyes really need those glasses! I have kept an older pair or two (prescription maybe slightly old, but still better than nothing) and put them in my bag and in my car so if my normal ones get broken, I will still be able to see. Even reading glasses can work for those of us with older eyes who need help to see up close or to read. Those are inexpensive and sold everywhere. Just a thought!
Hi Linda, I'm always glad when you drop by. I was just thinking about you. Your latest video just popped up in my feed. Onion sets...I hope to do a better job of planting and harvesting onions next year. I know you know a thing or two about being prepared since you live in New Orleans. Tell me about your prep.
I stopped in because I saw your first aid bag and I hung around after you stated it was a fishing box..I enjoyed the vid, the information provided was educational and informative. I also enjoyed your presentation it's subtle, direct enough but with a touch of grace. Thank you so very much....
Thank you, Denise! I have all those items, but of course, where are they all? I will get my bag together as soon as I finish these jack-o-lantern cookies for the grand kiddos! You're a star!🤗
You know, Ms. Grey, that was my problem. I had most of the things in the medicine cabinet, the upstairs bathroom, some in the guest bathroom, and some in the downstairs bathroom but when something was needed, it was search and seize trying to find it. Now...it's all in one place where I can send one person to get the bag. Other "extras" will be housed in one particular bathroom so I know where to look for it.
Hi Rachel, yes. Let this serve as a reminder to go through yours. Check it for expired materials or you might just need to replenish. Thank you so much for watching. Any suggestions for my kit?
@@homemakingwithdenise the instant ice packs for sure. But also hot water bottles. Walmart has them for about $7 and Amazon has some nice ones with cozie slip covers. But you can just use instant hot packs. Also mole skin for feet is one I keep in my kit
You are such an inspiration! Thank you for all you do for homemakers. I’ve learned a lot of valuable info from your videos and I hope you continue. I did think of one thing you might want to add to your emergency bag and that would be a blanket. Never know when you might need one! God Bless You and Your Family
@@homemakingwithdenise Hi, Denise! I'm just beginning to get together a first aid kit/bag. I recently bought an Adventure First Aid Kit from Target & I've been adding a few things to it. I love your idea of using a fishing tackle bag! That's a great idea!💖🤗 And I also love the idea of using a belt for a tourniquet! I was wondering what I was going to do for that one :)
Greetings from East Texas! New subscriber. I have a Fishing Tackle bag for my ER bag also 😀 I would recommend adding: A couple of the small Silver emergency blankets (Walmart-Camping / Outdoor): a garbage bag ( I have a regular-unscented bag and a folded Contractor bag (strong, can be used to shelter a victim etc); ATHLETIC TAPE (you can cut it in strips to make Butterfly strips to hold wound edges together); SUPER GLUE (Liquid- NOT Gel... to glue lacerations / gashes / cuts together. Yup-same as Liquid Bandage. OB TAMPONS (that specific brand) - useful to plug a puncture wound or bullet hole; stick in nostril to stop nosebleed; bite on for knocked out teeth etc; Paracord. Consider placing your tweezers in the baggie with the needles. Great job!
This is a great video with a wealth of valuable information. I'd also suggest having meds in one spot ready to drop in the bag in case of an evacuation. I generally keep all my meds in a ziploc bag, which is useful when I need to leave in a hurry. I have a large and small first aid kit on hand but need to build a bag. Thanks for the tips.
Hi Denise-i would definitely add a product like OraGel, Floss and Dental Wax (the kind you put over rough spots on your teeth so it doesn’t rip apart your gums!). Another idea is cuticle nippers, toenail and fingernail clippers and a fingernail file. I haven’t had time to read all the other suggestions so please forgive if I’m repeating.
You are so welcome! But keep in mind you are putting together what you think you might need. Go as big or as compact as you think you need to. Remember...don't compare your beginning to someone else's middle.
@@homemakingwithdenise Hi Denise, we've been prepping for a few years and we have a full size first aid cabinet. But after watching your video today I've decided to put together a grab and go bag as well. I really liked your inclusion of the tools, that's not something I would've thought to include. It's always nice to get a different perspective.
I have much of the contents but have been searching for a better storage system. Your fishing tackle bag is a great idea! I love your additions of splinter and fishing hook removal tools as well. Thank you for the Red Cross list link. I will be looking for a good deal on a good size fishing bag this week. Thank you for teaching this veteran nurse some new tricks! Always learning. 😃👍
Fishing tackle ought to be coming up on sale since that season is wrapping up. My hubby just put his boat away on Saturday. He's in deep depression now Hahaha!

I can see burn cream though I wouldn't need the diaper rash cream since no babies here. I will look into your "14 tool multitool". It sounds handy! Oh...I've heard about the super glue for skin but not seen any just yet. I will be on the lookout for some of that stuff. Thank you for stopping by.
When I was in school, we were taught to have something to stabilize a bone break. A simple magazine makes a good splint. I would only use a splint if professional emergency medical care is not available and person has to be moved like in the case of a flood or staying ahead of a forest fire.
So true. I've learned all that too but luckily, I've not had to call upon it. Please God I have no need to try any of this and professional help will be close by or at least, timely.

Add some small, single use craze glue, you can use it to seal a cut that might have required sutures. It was first used in field hospitals, and medic stations in Vietnam. You could also include include some baby wipes, useful for cleaning scraps and abrasions. You can put some hydrogen peroxide in a travel size pump spray bottle. Using a pump spray bottle, you will put the hydrogen peroxide where it's needed, and not waste so much of it. You can find bottles of hydrogen peroxide, that has a pump spray top in some Dollar Tree stores.
