After throwing these back for years I was seriously looking forward to trying them as some days they are the only catch with size. I had always heard they were very difficult to clean. Yesterday on the indian river we weren't getting anything keeper size and ran across a school of the sailcats feeding on the surface. After catching six large fish in ten minutes we decided to take them home and try them. We could have filled the cooler with them but were hesitant till we actually tried them. Your method for cleaning actually makes these one of the easier fish to fillet. Seasoned up some flour and panko with an egg wash and fried them in deeper oil like you showed. They were great! Thanks for the video.
One thing I’ve learned fishing is this….. I never take anybody’s opinion on whether a fish is no good or whether it’s a trash fish…. I try it myself!…. A lot of it is so much personal preference…. Here’s something crazy I’m gonna throw out to you…. sometimes I fillet of fish … with a snap off blade…. I stick the blade all the way out as far as it’ll go…. it’s thin it’s flexible and a throwaway and they’re always sharp…. and they’re really good for cleaning really small fish…. bluegills(I love bluegills the best tasting)
Thanks for the shout Chris lol.. you’ve already prompted me to keep two species I usually throw back (Blues and Sail cats!) thanks for the videos and keep em coming!
Sick Lines Ellington ... no sir....Thank You, Just glad to have such great support in sharing our fishing adventures. It really help knowing people are enjoying them 👍😁.
Eaten a bunch of sail cats and I agree they are good. When there’s nothing else in the cooler, I always keep the last couple of those at the end of the day so we get some fresh fish to take home. Great video again.
Better than store bought fish any day of the week. Good video! Found your channel since I was searching for places to fish near New smyrna. I know of a few spots but I only fish with my son from shore. My oldest son has taken to fishing and loves it. Still trying to get him on his first snook and red though. Finally knocked trout off the list this year. He is ASD but is starting to follow directions fairly well.
R Slack ... there’s lots of fishing piers in NSB, there’s always the Jetties and beaches too. Glad to hear your sharing the love of fishing with your family. We try and post about twice a week. Hope you enjoy fishing the Ponce Inlet area and our channel.
@@SaltyStrikes I live in the Orlando area and usually fish Titusville or Cocoa areas. I am booking a condo to take a vacation in NSB late July or early August. Will be fishing the beach and looking for a few other spots. Have fun and keep up the good content!
*Excellent Video Chris..! I really like your recipe using a classic corn meal mix too... I always dust the fillets in light flour coating and wait a few minutes before hitting the egg wash and final coating. Hey... what knife were you using... is that a 12" Bubba? Working a Long Line Boat as young pup... We used the Classic 9" Marttiini and 16'' Nella Granton/Sheffield Fillet Knives and in fact... I still have three of the Marttiini's & two of those Granton knives in my kitchen knife block... They are still the best fillet knives I've ever used... Sending along a picture of them... I'm just proud & happy that I still have something that works like it did in the 70's besides my memory.* ..gw
gw wile ... thanks, it’s a Bubba Blade 9” Flex, Kim usually gets all my bubba blade for me during Christmas time when they are on sale. So far they’ve been the best knives but before these always had cheaper ones. A good knife goes a long way in making cleaning easier 👍
@@SaltyStrikes *You are so right about that... Now I know, u must have heard me wondering about those cats. Appreciate your vids Cap, knowledge is power yet when u share it so generously like u do that's a natural teacher. U got a cool customized boat and I get great ideas for my similar R222 boat from you. I like seeing you jam around on your boat on your video intro and wish it was longer. If u ever get to L.A. area or if I get down your way would love to see each others boats.
Google can read your mind. It's happened to me a time or two. I'll think - maybe out loud - about something and within a day or two, a UTube will be recommended about that same topic...
I have eaten these catfish before and they are not my favorite fish to catch but I have made good fish tacos out of them… well I wish I’d be catching redfish…. but you know there’s so many of those damn things out there…. and they are fun to catch they put up a good fight…. The one thing that bothers me is how damn slimy they are …. they really are slimy! Lol…. and I found through trial and air you gotta get all of that red meat off that’s what taste funky…. Sometimes that’s all I catch are these! Lisa
You can eat just about anything you catch in the Salt even those slimy buggers....Like most salt water fish lose the blood line and whip out the deep fryer!!
I’m gonna throw this out there too…. I have eaten redfish…. You know it’s a prized fish…. A fish targeted by many fisherman….. i’ve eaten them on a couple occasions…. from the same location….. The first one I ate was over the top out of this world(i’d like to add that I’ve cooked them myself pretty much the same way)…. they tasted different every time….. The first one I caught was the best tasting…. The other fish I caught never matched up to the flavor of the first one…(good but not spectacular) ….. and who knows why?…. what the fish was feeding on the time of year…. I just found this interesting….
Jrod Fred ... it’s a Porta potty, so impossible to clog. Plenty of room in there. That was one of the biggest selling points was a actual usable head on a not so huge boat.
Here is what we have Porta Potti White Thetford Corp www.amazon.com/dp/B006WPQNB2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_xPK0Eb974VMRW Plenty of capacity, don’t have to change it out very often.
We brought home 3 big sail cats and I made fish nuggets. I agree , salt water taste much better than fresh water cats , by far . Fresh water sometimes taste like dirt .
Salty Strikes I use House Autry seafood breeding , it’s already seasoned but I did use some blackened seasoning before I coated the fish . Fried it in canola oil. Fish nuggets , emmmm ha ha
I guess the least we can do is thin the herd and eat a few every now and then as they are sometimes a pain in the ass when trying to catch other species but I agree they are not bad fried up but make sure you only keep sail cats NOT hard heads!!😎
Great video bud. Sad to say we still can not post videos :( (had to take the last one down). Guess our insurance case is not over and will continue for probably another 6 months! Until then I'll just watch you guys lol. Maybe I will make the videos and save them
