My parents (Courtney and robinson) met on shemya in I belive in 87 and both from indiana. (If they hadn't met I wouldn't be here lol.) Airforce vets. I was born in Anchorage. Now live in indiana ofcourse after they retired. But I grew up on a few bases in my childhood before they moved back home. I'm lucky to have lived across this beautiful country. Anyway(I'm an only child) now 36 and they have been married 37 years... but they tell stories of holding up signs on the landing strip rating the landing of the planes and walking around the base eating pizza that they had flown in lol
As being stationed at Elmendorf AFB, AK from 1977-1978: Disbursement Accounting Specialist Military Pay- I remember talking to the many smaller bases- since if USAF members had payroll concerns- they'd have to contact their local payroll liaison and if their liaison had further questions- they'd call us.
Was TDY to The Rock during the bicentenial. You never forget the time spent there. Two guys had secured about a pound of bacon from the mess hall and were going to fish for halibut off the dock. They let out about 300 feet of line with a huge weight and about a pound of bacon at the end of the line and it was no closer to the water than if they were flying a kite.
We fish with just a hook, and it always shocks visitors as most fish don't eat hooks without food. The fish are so hungry its nuts. One guy used his GoPro to see the bottom of the water but before it hit the bottom the fish were trying to eat it.

I was at Shemya AFB when it Transistioned to Eareckson AS in 1994. There was a HAM station on the Island - KL7FBI. Of course they had a full power antenna. It inspired me to become a HAM. KC0QFC - but that was years ago and my license is inactive now. I'm surprised i remember the call signs.

Now MWR sells pizza on a Sunday each month. I did ask a pilot to bring me a dozen donuts... He should be here again in 2 weeks.

Sounds like you were the military's version of a financial superhero, swooping in to save the day with paychecks! Now it is taken care of on JBER.

Pictures of the Fish caught off the dock are in the library and some are bigger than the men who caught them.

Stationed there Jan 77 to Nov 77.
I hope you liked the video
I wonder how is the firefighter work schedule there. I might work there if the pay is good.
2 months on one month off and pay is around 100k. They hire as a temporary Firefighter and if you're a good fit then they offer a fulltime job.
