You are welcome.
what a service! thanks Robert for sharing this hard-earned technique. you deserve praise
You are welcome
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. It's a 1999 Volvo S70 base model. I am suspecting the sprocket is somehow on wrong. After watching your video, I realize that I can check the orientation at the back of the motor...and I will do that to be sure.
vaz Fx Good deal.
Doing a timing belt and pulley (S) install for family and their original plastic cover with timing marks is toast...I’ll have to cheat and line up the back like you showed. Thank for the tip!
You are welcome
Robert, this video was INCREDIBLY helpful.. THANK YOU
Very welcome
Thank you, I'll dig onto that first thing on the morning.
Thank you so very much for your guidance and time.
Oz Ramuco No problem.
Excelente vídeo, não somente esse mås todos os outros, ricas informações que não ví em outros vídeos.

Once you have the camshafts properly aligned in the back and the cam sprockets aligned in front to the marks on the timing belt cover and you have the camshaft cover secured and the timing belt on, it is a good idea to turn the crank shaft clockwise several times to get the belt to turn the cam shafts for several rotations to make sure that your timing is good. If it is off, eventually the valves and pistons will be out of time, and you won't be able to make complete revolutions of the cam, pistons, and valves. If it all turns smoothly, you know you are good to go. Also, if you have had the engine apart and have reassembled it with assembly lube and have topped off you engine oil and coolant, pull the fuel pump relay and crank the engine over several times to get oil pumped up to the top of the engine before replacing the fuel pump relay and starting up the engine. This "dry" turning over will help lube everything before you start the engine and it starts generating friction and heat.
thanks for sharing.
Hello, thanks Mr. Robert. Congratulations.
You are welcome.
Thanks again Robert.
You are welcome
Yes I watched it, it seems that in the xc90 was dry white smoke, in the case of my s80 t6 if I rev the car you can actually see like to much moisture in the floor almost like an spray of water, and the white smoke is not as pronounce as in the xc90.
Oz Ramuco My be early stages. Worth checking the shafts for play.
man.... yoh have just saved the day..... after 2 weeks of looking around and even talking to Volvo Macanic..... no one could show me how to put on the cam gear and set correct.
every One just say, you would not take them off....ok but I did so how do I put back on CORRECT????.....
Thanks thanks thanks
+TheMoneyTron.com thanks for watching.
Robert DIY hey boss how to align the camshaft pulley with the dimple in the engine mark, the 2 pulleys on the top match with the marks but the one on the bottom camshaft pulley doesn't match I upload a video please help
Your vids are always great. Thank you!
Thanks for taking the time and watching.
i actually love you.
thank you.
I need help with 2005 Volvo xc90 2.9 lt engine need to replace water pump
Ok
Hi Robert I'm having trouble with Volvo 850 1993 it died while driving it's getting gas to the fuel rail the timing marks are perfect Honda belt I changed the spark plug spark plug wires so I'm wondering if it could be the coil or something like that
ua-cam.com/video/YiPAPu-K8OI/v-deo.html
HI Robert, I have a question. I am in the process of doing a head gasket change. My exhaust cam's market was 180 degrees out of alignment when I was disassembling the motor. I was wondering, is it possible to run the car with the cam 180 degrees opposite the mark on the timing cover? The car's power was very poor, but I attributed that to the head gasket and carbon build up on the valves from valve stem seal leaks. Do you think the previous owner may had the cams flopped, or maybe the cam sprockets are on wrong? what's you guess? Thanks for any advice.
vaz Fx I don't think the car will run with the timing off 180 degrees on either of the cams. Check the timing on the back of the motor. It is possible for the cam sprocket to be off but I have no idea what kind of car you have so proceed with caution. Make sure you roll the motor over by hand a couple of times before you start it.
Robert my timjng kn cylinder 1 is advanced 68° my marks look off on cams but belt has not been removed os it possible the intake spun faster the the exhaust and caused my timing to be to far off to start my car?
Not if the belt is tight.
notice if you look at the groves... its a straight line all the way across it seems..
Thanks for watching
+Robert DIY where do the crank sensor location on engin
So u dont necessary need those cam locking tools to change dat timing belt, just double check everythang right
Correct
I have a 97 Volvo 960 2.9l 24 valve. I placed new water pump. Timing tensioner. And few other things for the timing. I placed the crank on the marking. I have set the cams on right. When I put the cover on. But didn't bolt it down way to tight. The left can on turn at all. But the right cam would turn without any problems. I would like to ask u a question. Why the left cam won't turn freely? Sorry for asking. I watched ur videos. And I use ur advice.
Did you use assembly lube on the cams when you installed them?
@@RobertDIY yes sir I did. I have turn the crank clockwise until I got it on the marking. I used the lube where the cams set in place. When I placed the cams on. I have set them the way they supposed to go on. Due to its a rear wheel drive. Where I can't see at the back for the correct timing on cams. So I had to go by the marking on the front of the cams. The driver side is turning freely. Passenger side doesn't. The question is do I need to keep turning the crank? Because there were few times I did turn the crank some more. When it wasn't time with the oil pump. The passenger side did turn.
Does it matter if you accidentaly swap the intake and exhaust cams on this engine? Like if you put the exhaust cam where the intake cam should be and the intake cam where the exhaust cam should be....
I would think so.
As always good info.
John Hayward Thanks for watching.
I passed the timing during self-maintenance. I couldn't find the TDC because I loosened the belt and turned around when I was looking for it. Can the engine be on the car?
Huh?
Robert DIY Hi, forgot the time belt change and setting point.
Can I set the headset without removing it?
Well the car besides blowing white smoke from the exhaust also leaks drops of what I think it's coolant even after the car has been running for a whole and the car is warm, I have look onto the oil cap and oil stick and doesn't seem to be any coolant on oil, (no creaminess of oil or white residue) so I am totally confused here, so the only thing I was thinking now that it could be but not sure, is if the turbos are water cool then maybe one of both it's leaking and sending some of that leak straight out trough the exhaust pipe?
Oz Ramuco The turbo's are actually part of the exhaust. They use exhaust air to drive the turbines. If one or both are leaking oil, you will get the light grey smoke out the exhaust. Pull the inlets of the turbos and see if either has any shaft play.
thanks
Thanks so much for this! Took one camshaft apart without marking its orientation using my 'only do one at a time because I haven't ever done this before' method and was stuck for months because I just couldn't find any refrences online or through any of my fellow shadetree Volvo mechanics. I do have one question though. How will I turn the camshafts to get them back on their timing marks? Thanks again!
Chas. Dowdy If you can get the crank on it's mark, you can turn the cams anyway you want without any damage to the motor. - Volvo timing alignment, cams moved during timing belt installation - Auto Information Series - Timing Mark Crank Sprocket Location, Volvo 850, S70, V70, XC70 - Auto Information Series
Hi i just bought a set of NA cams to put into my 97 850 t5, would it be possible for you to make a tutorial on how to do a proper instal of these cams? Steps, tools, how to set the timing? Much appreciated my friend :)
John Gregory The video of removing the head and installing it will show you how to install the cams. Just remove the stuff off of the back of the motor (cap, rotor, cam sensor, etc). Then remove the cam cover. Swap the cams out, then time the intake cam 4 degrees advance (you will need a compass or cam tool for that), advance is top towards the front of the car. - Volvo S70 T5 restoration day 7, head cleaning, cam swap, valves removed, etc. - Auto Repair Series Yes I can make a video to swapping the cams but it won't be any time soon unless someone request my help in doing so.
But it's there coolant use to cool the turbos or just oil? If only oil then the turbos wouldn't cause the white smoke and condensation from exhaust system along with droplets of what appears to be coolant
Oz Ramuco COOLANT AND OIL. Did you watch the video I posted with the XC90 I linked?
great video, i have a question regarding my 1998 volvo v70 wagon, the camshaft cover is melting it looks like indication of somthing wrong under that plastic cover, im assuming its the timing belt cover but the sticker says camshaft cover, anywho i was wonderin what i should do, i am currently not driving it because it was makin an obvious sound that there was friction with the plastic n the sprockets that spin..
Without pictures or a video it is hard for me to understand what issue you are having. Example is, I have no idea what you mean by "the camshaft cover is melting". To me, that is the timing belt cover. Please go to my website and contact me directly. Or post a video and link the video to me so I can understand what is going on.
Hey Robert, I pulled my crank pulley off and cranked the motor without my timing belt on I have my cam gears lined up but how can i line up my crank from scratch?
I have no idea. You are supposed to line up the crank before you remove the belt.
hey . do you have a video on how to align the crankshaft with the cams?
ua-cam.com/video/gt9w-ZSxs9I/v-deo.html
Question Robert after I put my cam cover back on my exhaust cam is off line by a little, how can I get it back in time without pulling the cam cover back off ?
gary dawson Turn it.
Will this work on a s80 t6 volvo 1999?
would what work? if you want to check timing, put the crank on the mark and make sure the cam sprockets are aligned to the marks in the cover.
Hi I was wondering if can tell me if I can change the cam seals on a 3005 Volvo s40 t5 without the cam tool. I’m in the process of replacing the head gasket.
ua-cam.com/video/0eSuvM6Bl7Y/v-deo.html
If you are replacing the head gasket, you've obviously removed the cam cover and have liberated the cam shafts with their toothed pulleys.
The seals can actually be slipped off (and on) down the length of the camshaft, past the cams. Just make sure you replace them in the original orientation
Be careful removing the cams from their beds, particularly if they have VVT units. The ends near the pulleys fit very tightly into their bearings and can be damaged, and the pulleys overhang protrusions from the engine. Take your time and wiggle them slowly upwards and towards the pulley. Don't tilt them until they are free!
Hi Robert and thanks for informative video which scared me a little bit. I have Volvo 2004 V40 and the timing belt got contaminated with oil and got loose and both cams jumped on certain position. I took the chance and replaced the timing belt with it's kits after watching your other video and thank God no interference engine and no bent valves. The car started fine but I am having problem installing the old serpentine belt although I followed the routing diagram and tried all possible configuration . Any hint before I buy new drive belt other than the belt got shorting due to cold weather. Thanks
Did you watch the serpentine belt video?
Hey Robert, my exhaust cam turned a bit (1/2 inch) clockwise while snugging down the cam cover. I tried to turn the cam back a bit but it wont move in either clockwise or counter clockwise direction.. Do i need to take the whole cam cover loose again or am I missing something? Thanks!
Its a v70 2,5 10V from 98 btw!
Is the crank on its mark?
Yeah, double checked, the crank is still perfectly on mark..
i have to change a head gasket on a 1999 volvo s80 t6. I have to remove the timing belt do i have to take the engine out of the car to do so.? and can you give me some advice on removing the head to replace the gasket?
No you do not have to remove the motor to take the head off of it. I have not done a video for the S80 so I am not sure of each step. As with any car, you pull the stuff from off the top of the motor, then disconnect the stuff attached to the sides, front and back, then do what you need to do to access the head bolts. Motor Cylinder Head Removal, Head Gasket, Burnt Valve, etc. (Volvo 850, S70) - Auto Repair Series
So i cant get the alignment of the cams its off maybe 10 degree , and cant be moved.and the frontmarks dont align on exhaustcam at all.what is the point of alignment of camshaft if the front has to be aligned on marks to?if i turn the front to align the back of the cams move out of alignment.im really struggling with it.Also a old screw in the back or the camshaft broke off while putting the stuff back on, is it really necessary to replace, because it holds good even without the screw in it?
please help Robert , why align the back if the front is not align because of it?
+leif fischer huh? I have no idea what you are talking about. I don't even know what kind of car you have.
i have a volvo 850 2.5 1994 20v,
so my question is: i aligned the timing of the camshafts on back of the motor, now how do i get the front of the timing right ,
because if i moVe them the back moves too
+leif fischer you leave the front where it is and install the belt.
I am thinking it might have something to do with the turbo or something like that maybe? My car is a 2000 s80 t6 model, I like the car but it's making me old by the minute :(
Oz Ramuco Head gaskets usually don't just blow. You have to over heat the motor or someone had to install it wrong.
so do you thing maybe I did not install the head gasket correctly? its there anything else i should look into before I dig back onto removing the head again? don't know if there is any relation between the turbo, exhaust manifold or maybe something around there to be causing both the white smoke and the coolant leak behind the engine on the driver side. any ideas or advice helps
l enjoyed it very useful
Thanks for watching.
hello Robert ..did this method function with a S40 t4 head ?..
+gemeloS40 Probably.
Hi again Robert ! Does this video work for my S60r 2006? Need to change the head gasket
Nope, search P2.

What size are the bolts on the cam sprocket?
+bigretro22 I don't know but I think they are the same as the intake manifold bolts.
Hello Robert, ok here I am again. So car started right on 👍 the problem is that the whole reason I did all this is because there was white smoke and coolant drops coming from tail pipe, so I though that the was a head gasket problem, but after all this fun work the car is still blowing a bit of coolant from tail pipe and coolant keeps on leaking from behind the engine on the driver side, I can't seem to be able to locate exactly from where it's this coolant leaking from, I have scratched my head for a while so here I am asking for advice again, can you please help
Thank you again.
Oz Ramuco The turbo should have coolant lines. Also, are you sure the white smoke is coolant? Could be a turbo taking a dump, usually more grey smoke. - 2003 Volvo XC90 T6 AWD Smokes and has P0234 Code. Bad turbo...
it's white and with liquid drops as well
(coolant?) wich is the reason I replaced the head gasket and ha the head machined
Condensation ALWAYS leaks out of exhaust. When the car is cold, white smoke usually comes out of the exhaust. What else was going on with the car? Was it overheating? Was it loosing power? Was it misfiring? Was it mixing coolant in the oil? Was it loosing coolant other than the coolant hose you have leaking behind the motor? Replacing a head gasket is to much work to do on guess work or speculation.
Hello Robert, question. the car keeps blowing white smoke from exhaust and droplets of coolant as well. so I got the Bock tester to see if the liquid would turn green or yellow but it remain blue, which I think means that there is no coolant going into the combustion chamber or that the head gasket it's ok? can you help please.... I am confused. trying to determine what its causing this darn coolant vapor coming from tail pipes
The tester tells you that there is no combustion gasses going into the coolant. Can you take this discussion to the head gasket video or private, off of this timing video please. - How to test for a blown head gasket on a Volvo - VOTD
Hi Robert do u know how can reset the antiskid service requiered on my volvo xc90 2004 ?
chilangoguapo32 The ABS light? No, you may want to check to make sure your wheel sensors are plugged in. If so, I suggest you have it checked at a service place that works on Volvo's.
Robert DIY no is the abs in the dash say antiskid service requiered
That would be my guess. What does the owners manual say?
Robert DIY fault in the dstc system
Make sure everything under the hood is connected, especially near the brake booster and ABS module.
How about grank mark
Crank mark?

ok so I removed the head, before I did that I timed the camshafts to the top of the timing cover but not the crankshaft, i also changed the pulleys on the camshafts, so now i don't know how to set the timing right on the car :( can you help me please?, i guess what I am asking is how after all my stupidity can i set the timing on the crankshaft, i am thinking to set the crankshaft to the correct marking, then to set the cams the way you illustrated on this video and finally set the camshafts pulley in their marks and only then to reinstall the timing belt. am I correct??
Oz Ramuco You really need to set the crank on it's mark before you install the cams in the head. So, if you already installed the cam cover, you may have to remove it if the crank is NOT on the marks. Matter of fact, if the crank is NOT on the mark, and you installed the cam cover, you may have damaged some valves. Did you use my video to remove and install the head? Timing Mark Crank Sprocket Location, Volvo 850, S70, V70, XC70 - Auto Information Series - Volvo timing alignment - Auto Information Series
so here is what I did, took the back cover for the cams so that I know that they were align then without the spark plugs nor the timing belt I finally put the crankshaft on its mark, and only then I installed the timing belt and gave it two full turns to see if all the marks where in their proper place and they were spot on. does that sounds ok or should I go ahead and do it all over
thanks for the help!!
Sounds perfect. If the crank turned over with the belt installed, tensioner set, and back of cams lined up in the back of the head, you should be good to go.
I guess you have a Volvo?
yes a 2000 s80 t6
Hello sir I have a 2004 v70 with 2.4 non-turbo with dual vvt unsprung hubs. Bought it cheap because it would not start. Someone has removed the cam gears to work on the engine and they did not put the cam gears back on correctly and they are not indexed in anyway so you can put them on in all three positions. This motor is interference. the valves get so close that there are recesses cut in the pistons so will this work for this engine?
No. Do you have the rear cam locking tool?
Robert DIY no i do not. i did line up the slots in rear cams according to your video i could not get the front timing marks close no matter where i mounted the sprockets.
No sir I do not have the rear cam locking tool.
It really can not be done without that tool.
can you explain the process for realigning sprockets. i can get the tool.
Q req
thanks
