    The lawnmower affect is 100% real. I experienced it myself today. I was replacing my odometer gear yesterday and had briefly started the car and shut it off. Today when I went out to start the car it started but stumbled then stalled. when I tried to restart it and the motor would not fire it sounded like it had no compression when turning over. I tested everything from spark to fuel and discovered I had both. I pulled out the spark plugs and poured a bit of oil down each cylinder and put the pedal to the floor and cranked it like crazy till it finally fired up. Thank you Robert, you are the Man!!!

      I noticed that effect on my V70, but I could drive the car about two miles, and still have issues. Drive it half a mile more, no more starting problem!
      Weird or what? Never had that on any other car in all my 45 years of driving experience.

    Robert, you are da man! You have fixed my wife's 850 so many times and I need to thank you! Today it was the dreaded "lawnmower" problem. She moved the car in, then out a couple days ago, and today it wouldn't start - sounded like it was flooded. I put some oil in the cylinders, and it fired right up, and treated us to one heck of a smoke screen! Question - what can be done to avoid the "lawnmower" problem, or do we just need to drive around the block and warm it up good before pulling back in the garage? You rock!

      @@RobertDIY last night I drove to the Safeway 1 mile away and 850 would crank but not start when trying to come home. I walked home and returned to the car 90 minutes later, checked the injection relay, tapped on it, and it started. But the problem could have been lawnmower thing. Not sure. It’s also been raining a lot here lately. Anyway, thanks, and I hope your move is going well. Sorry Ohio didn’t work out.

    Hi Robert, this is very helpful information! I was about to investigate the cam sensor, now that I've established fuel pressure in the rail, but since I already know I have spark, I guess that eliminates the cam sensor. My next move is going to be the injector relay above the radiator.
    Thank you 💕

      @whitesapphire5865 2 роки тому

      @@RobertDIY Me too.... I didn't find an injector relay on the radiator shroud, because it seems this model doesn't have one.
      Now, with a splash of fuel straight into the manifold, it starts up straight away and runs for about ten seconds and then dies. So spark is apparent, valve timing is good, compression is good, so it only leaves fuel. Looking at the fuel pump relay at component level reveals at least one out of spec capacitor, and one suspect, so tomorrow, I'll be borrowing a fuel pump relay just as a double check, but it's beginning to look to me like the injectors aren't firing. I think I might try my oscilloscope on the injector connectors to see if I can find a signal. They are fed at a constant battery voltage, and it looks like they are pulled low by the ECM to fire them.
      Beyond this, I'm going to need a fault code scanner, or call in the local garage mechanic.

    Dang Robert...#5 bit me during a crank-no-start scenario. My '97 850 has 340k on it and it has suffered the lawn mower syndrome on a previous occasion. I quickly confirmed I had spark and good fuel pressure so I pulled the plugs and put in a little oil, no luck. I could smell gas and thought it might be flooded so I didn't really suspect #5 but tapped on the relay anyway. I did the tapping/start attempt several times but still no luck. I then took ohm readings on the cam and crank sensors and the idle air control valve... all in spec. Finally out of desperation I revisited #5 but this time did the tapping with the ignition on and bingo, it fired right up. It just did not occur to me to tap it with the ignition on but in retrospect it makes sense.
    Anyway, many thanks and by the way IPD VOLVO sells an aftermarket 3545803 for $14.

    That fuel pump relay was causing my 94 so many issues. Not starting. Starting barley and dying. Or the worst it died while driving. Thank God I was able to pull off to the side of the road. Installed the new relay and have had none of those issues since and have done at least 4-5k miles! Robert saved the day. Part was only about 35$! Just replace it! Side note I did break some of the plastic in the whole fuse box area and it was almost a nightmare trying to get the relay in. Praying I don't have to change any others in there lol

    I also has a very bad experience with the fuel injection relay. I got a PO120 code. i replaced the Throttle position sensor. Somehow the TPS and relay are on the same circuit, because the relay was the problem with intermittent stalling and no a start condition. To make things worse, the replacement brand new F.I.R was defective and would cut out on the highway, give me a P0120 code, after I reset the code, the car would run fine for a while and then repeated it until it finally died a year later. It was a very difficult problem to find.But surely it was the Fuel injection relay, because the car is running great now.

    Hi Robert, I have an 850 that I believe is lawnmower locking all the time (once or twice a week) even after highway driving (car is a manual turbo tho so I do my best while driving it to keep the revs as low as they will smoothly go without dogging out, so it may not have exceeded 4000 revs in quite a while if that matters.) I haven't checked sensors or relays but i get a strong fuel smell from under the oil filler cap so I'm pretty sure that is the issue. I just replaced my spark plugs as they were somewhat fouled and I was going to do them anyway, however the car is now bricked and wont start at all. There is a lot of loose oil under my plastic engine cover that I assume is from the totally shot PCV that I just had replaced at a volvo shop. The shop did not replace the oil covered spark plugs or ignition coils when they did the PCV, which had gotten to the point it was on the verge of blowing my cam seals. What should my next move be as this car is my daily and I rely on it.

      It's running SUPER rich. May need a temp sensor or something like that. Have you checked for codes or made sure all of the vacuum lines and piping are good?

    • @lowkeythethiccstergod6939
      @lowkeythethiccstergod6939 Рік тому

      @@RobertDIY I actually did some more testing and found that my engine will spark right at first but then will immediately cut out the spark after the first few sparks leading me to suspect the cam sensor may have been damaged by the bad PCV leaking all over it. It has for sure lawnmower locked before so I believe that you are correct about the running rich. The previous owner swore up and down that the car managed a dyno run at 284bhp and having driven the car hard a couple times I believe him. Without any obvious modifications to the engine or turbo I would guess he managed most of that with a pretty aggressive tune. I live in CO though so running rich is fairly common so who knows though. On a side note I just realized that my idle air controller is unplugged and makes a constant grinding noise when plugged in so perhaps that could be affecting my idle mix.

    I have a Number 6 for you.... Water in the gas. I checked spark, fuel pressure (40PSi), compression (4 around 200, 1 around 160), tried disconnecting the MAF, tried disconnecting the TPS. Confirmed the readings on the TPS using my Autel scanner. I tried your idea about the Lawn Mower Effect. I got it started once... it idled a while and then died after moving about 20 feet. No power at all. Would not start again. Plugs were wet but didn't smell much like gas. With plugs removed could not smell gas coming from the cylinders,
    Finally attached a hose to the fuel rail Schrader valve. Turned the key on and off a bunch of times since the fuel pump only comes on for a few seconds unless you're starting or running. I filled a pint pyrex measuring cup with a clear liquid that smelled only very faintly of gas. Then again. then a third time. I finally got something that smelled and looked like gas. Same color as water, but clearly a different viscosity. Hard to tell since gas isn't pink any more, but the smell was distinct.
    NOW I could smell gas from the cylinders. Car started right up after that.
    More than a pint of water. Yikes. Gas cap was on tight, so I doubt it was the car and condensation.
    I'm still waiting for a call back from the gas station that robbed me of two days of my life :) .
    By the way, YOU ARE THE MAN! I have learned soooooooooooooo much from you. I did the dash tabs on this car using your instructions, and lot of other things. So thank you thank you thank you for all your help.

    I'm currently troubleshooting the following: 96 850 non turbo. All summer it starts just fine. Once it's below 50ish degrees outside, it will start momentarily (rpm up and then instead of dropping to idle after half a sec, it just dies. Then, if you keep cranking without turning off the key, it will not start again. If you turn it all the way off and try to start again, it will start exactly as it did the first time, then die. Repeat this 10 times or so and then it stays running. It's cold today, 48 degrees, but the sun was shining on the car and I tried it and it started normally.

    I'm having a slow cold start issue on my 98 v70. It starts but cranks forever before finally starting. Once started and warmed up, it will then start no problem. I've replaced the fuel pump, the fuel filter, the fuel pump relay, the vac purge valve, the spark plugs, the plug wires, cleaned the throttle body, and i replaced the coolant temp sensor. Could it be fuel pressure regulator? Maybe cam sensor? Also it is coding on PO410. could a vac leak cause slow cold start?

      I've also replaced the MAF sensor and both O2 sensors.

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  8 місяців тому

      How long is forever? ECT and cam old sensors are usually what causes long cranks. You can also have low compression due to a rich condition causing it.

    • @imamymay
      @imamymay 8 місяців тому

      @@RobertDIY Replaced coolant sensor... but not cam sensor. Has new fuel pump, new filter, new relay, new MAF, new O2 sensors. It takes about 5 to 10 minutes of trying to start it for it to finally catch and fire up. current for is 410. I've heard it can also be the throttle sensor or the cam sensor. It also has new plugs and wires but not a new distributor. It could also be bad connector on the ECT. One side is broken. It's connected but the plastic casing was damaged. I cleaned connection and put dielectric grease on it. I'm wondering it the vacuum issue might be causing pressure regulator to fail?

      @@RobertDIY I've checked the fuel --OK. I've checked the spark --OK. I've checked the compression. I have one cylinder -15psi, another cylinder -5, and two cylinders at 120psi -- this is for a s740. I assume the psi for these should be 120? But the thing won't start again.
      My mom stalled out just before she arrived to my house the other day. Then, it started back up after several minutes, enough for her to pull into my driveway.
      From what I have read and seen, have I exhausted all possibilities except the relay? I'm now at the point where I need to get access to the relays but I can't figure out how to take the casing out, above the ash tray.

Sorry but i guess i was wrong too about valves being responsible of it.

    When i turn key to start engine, his can do some rotatation (more often - not at all) i hear JUST a car starter work, and when i release the key, i hear the solenoid relay returning.
    Can it be the result of a bad wire (one of your "reasons")? (Volvo 850, 1995, B5254FS)
