I mean, there are things you can do to help avoid it. Firstly, review things with purpose: what I mean is, instead of maybe doing a thousand practice questions or repeating flashcards over and over, tell yourself: "If I get all of my flashcards right, no hesitation, then I know it" "if I get x number of problems right in a row, then I know it". This helps your "how do I know?" anxieties because you can tell yourself "I know I'm good because I did that". Secondly, try to sleep, drink and eat well, you don't want to be groggy and angry before a test because all that negativity gets anxiety out. Then, find a specific method, create a mental series of steps for every subject, like maybe for essays it's 1) outline the main points to talk about 2) write key sentences 3) develop them, so that you avoid the "I don't know what to do" situation
Thanks for doing this, this semester I got really high marks in my maths tests but in the final exam I got a 73. And it was all caused by silly mistakes. Hopefully I can bounce back next time
Dear Thomas, you might not believe it, but your videos have changed my life around! I used to procrastinate - A LOT - and then stumbled upon your videos, and looking at how serious you are with managing so many things so efficiently all together, I thought to myself, if he can, and if he's helping other people do the same, why can't I? Thank you Thomas - and I thank you A LOT! Keep your vids coming, you have no idea how big a fan (and counting) you have earned yourself!
When I do 35-5 = 31 before doing the actual hard part. I mean it really sucks that I didn't do the question wrong but it's ever so slightly off that It can't be marked right.
So, if you're second-guessing yourself on a test question, should you change your answer? For those of you with tests this week who can't wait until the next video... I'll spoil the surprise. The answer is yes. Check back next Thursday for the research - and the brain bugs most of us have - that explains why :)
I freakin left a part of a question in my science exam which was of 2 marks. I also knew the answer to it. Same with the maths exam, I didn't read the question properly and it had one more question to be answered. Also because of test anxiety, I tend to write wrong answer even when I know their correct ones.
I find that for math tests or other tests where you do math, I can avoid stupid mistakes best if I do the exam twice. Sounds crazy, but hear me out. You finish the test the first time and pick out problems that you think you might've gotten wrong (either because they're long or because there's something in them that you find hard). Cover up your initial answer to that question and redo it from the very beginning. At the end, compare your answers.
I think the #1 pieces of advice that apply to me are to read carefully and write neatly. I read really fast so I usually miss out on important details. I’ve had marks deducted from my math tests because while doing my work I mistake a 9 for a 7.
Another tip to stay on track while writing essays which my teacher told me - re read the essay topic or question at regular intervals (preferably after every para) and take some time to think about whether what you have written the correct thing or not.
This week I started watching Lok and I'm seeing this video from 3 years ago... WOW UA-cam IS AWESOME THEY WAITED FOR ME TO WATCH IT SO I CAN CATCH THIS AWESOME REFERENCE
I keep getting over 90% in maths exams but I rarely get the hundred and if you gave me each problem individually I can solve it , for some reason when they're all together I make mistakes Like not reading the question properly , mixing up symbols etc.
1. Time pressure 2. Double check 3.Subvocalize letter(only multiple choice) 4. Draw a box around each problem work 5. Slow down and read question slowly(watch out for trick wording) 6.Create outline for writing essays (stay on topic) 7.Cut down on test anxiety 8. Check spelling or grammar (English exams) 9. Do a sanity check before the problem. 10.Know your past mistakes.
My mind always goes blank during tests at first. I'm horrible at managing stress and time limits stress me out. Copying numbers is my weakness. I usually know the theory and how to calculate things but I swear to god I always manage to mess up the numbers. The teachers are always like "Where did you get that number???" Hell if I know, I turn into a creative dumbass witch who conjures her own numbers. 100 is suddenly 5000. That's just how it goes. It saddens me because that's how I lose most of my points. Not because I don't know how to do something but because I accidentally insert the wrong numbers. Sucks.
Oh and I usually get perfect score when it comes to homework, so I'm scared that my teachers think I don't do my homework myself. I do! But it's different, because I'm not stressed out while doing homework.
I guess you alluded to it when you said to read each question carefully, but I would add that you should also read the overall exam directions carefully. I've had several exams where the professor/teacher included instructions such as "draw a star in the upper right corner of this page" to check if people were actually reading the directions. If you followed the direction, you got a couple extra points. Not to mention that thoroughly reading the directions is a smart idea anyway.
Ransom Patterson that's a fantastic additional tip. I vividly remember a test we did in my 6th grade math class; the paper had a bunch of instructions, first of which was, "Read all the instructions before doing any work." After that there were about 30 instructions that required lots of writing and diagrams... ...and the last instruction was, "Ignore all previous instructions; turn your paper over and do nothing." Being a hasty and overzealous student, I of course started working through the instructions right away. I got about halfway through the list before I noticed the final instruction. Good thing it wasn't graded! He just had us take it to prove a point :P
I am soo glad that I have found your channel . But I have a question for you . What do I do when I am not being productive because "I have time left" ? I need your help in that domain . Thank you and keep up the phenomenal work .
+Smiler Lulu Simply demand that your university no longer requires students to study for exams because that´s not learning. People are supposed to go to school to learn - because if they don´t they don´t learn anything. Text anxiety makes sense. Ban exams and you eliminate text anxiety. We must therefore either go to school to learn to learn and no exams - or not at all.
I look forward to these videos because as a college student I get to see new ideas and concepts on how I can make the best use of my time studying and best practices I NEVER learned while in school growing up! Thanks bro!!
That recap was definitely Korra-inspired! awesome dude! Also, creating an outline for essays is something I found to be super helpful. Not just for an exam but also for an assignment. It always gives you something to go back to and going through the planning phase is a great confidence/productivity boost.
Thomas Frank hey, my exams have already started and i have one left next mon. from the past 3 papers i have this dilemma. lets say i have alrdy exceeded the time i set aside for doing the paper. should i use the time left to try and solve the qns i previously skipped to try and get extra marks or do i check the qns i already know the ans for to prevent losing marks for careless mistakes. any research to show which is a better strategy?
Syrone David I could definitely look into that, though it might be hard to find research on that specific question. However, my initial thoughts are that you should at least try to answer every question, unless you're taking a test where wrong answers hurt more than blank ones. I haven't yet found reliable data for it, but I've seen this piece of advice cited multiple times: If you're unsure about a question, but can narrow it down to two possible answers, then statistically you're likely to guess it right. Maybe that can help you go through the harder questions more quickly, giving you some extra time to double check the ones you're more confident on. I'll keep reading and searching to hopefully find a better answer to this though :)
It's too bad these exam videos came a week after my exams (I live in Canada so it makes sense why). I really hate when multiple choice questions have the "choose the best answer." question, because sometimes the answer could be simply a detail that could be opinionated that went over your head in lecture. I'm glad the later classes in my major that I've taken don't use multiple choice that often. Honestly a lot of multiple choice (especially in first year) were just designed to trick the hell out of you, even if you knew the material front to back. Short and long answer questions are a better test of knowledge in my opinion, they allow you to connect your ideas in a coherent form. And it's solely based on you knowing the material, not you missing a word that changes the whole question for you, like in multiple choice. Great video, it will be helpful in my final year.
Matteus ah, guess I was a bit late then! Hope it proves helpful next year. I'm inclined to agree with you in a general sense, though multiple-choice might be a good format for testing quickly on a large body of facts. Testing format effectiveness is a topic I'd like to do more reading on :)
Today I had a probability exam (2nd year uni maths) and misread a 3 as a 2.. and didn't realize so this cause a bunch of subsequent questions to also be wrong...otherwise would have got close to full marks.... fuck
I once said on my math test that 1+1=3 when I meant to say two and this always happens for each math test I get and this is how I get bad grades in math.
Hi Tom, I understand intensive work is something one should aim for, I usually relate speed with intensity but the result is always silly mistakes. How can I avoid this ?

Typing the wrong thing and getting the wrong answer. 2*8 = 18. For some reason I’ve forgotten to sqrt my final answer after using Pythagoras The question was to find the area of the circle after finding x, I wrote x as the answer Part b was in the same line as part a so I didn’t see it My entire class used to expect me to get the award for 100%, (I wanted too) but I don’t think they do anymore 💀
Argh I hate this man I just did my English test and I wrote a whole story and I literally cancelled out my most important paragraph cause I exceeded 450 words bruh
Hardik Chawla there are several ways you can do that. If you'd like to track the time you've worked, you can use a time tracker like Toggl (and there are many others). If you just want to cross off assignments and be able to see the ones that are done, most to-do apps work well. I use Todoist. Another option is just creating an "Accomplishment Journal" - for me, it was a notebook in Evernote.
I just had an English exam and there I came across my biggest mistake which is not managing my time I had to write a 5 paragraph essay in less than 30 min cause I took too much time at the reading part 💔💔
Alien Mode in short, "speed reading" as advertised by the people who create courses and seminars on it, is mostly B.S. You're limited by several things when you read - the eye's area of focus (fixation), speed at moving to new areas of focus (saccades), and how fast your brain can extract meaning from little squiggly lines. Beyond around 500-600 wpm (words per minute) actual comprehension of information starts to massively decline for the average person. That said, there are some techniques you can use to boost your reading speed (while still retaining comprehension) on a larger scale. Active reading, preparation, pseudo-skimming, and other techniques will cut down on your reading time in the long run, even if they're not exactly "boosting your WPM". The biggest thing to ask yourself is, "Why am I reading?" If I'm reading a book, it's to learn the content and use it - which means I don't want to focus on how fast my eyes run over it. A video with much more detail is coming soon :)
Sorry this is probably not related to the video. But eversince my increase in workload at school, I constantly feel like I'm just stuffing facts into my head, and never really have the time or energy to analyze what I'm doing. I feel like there's no time for "critical thinking", do you have any suggestions? Thanks you!
this test i reallyyyyyyyyyy wanted a 100 in math but i made silly mistakes while writing formula ..but when i got home i could solve it in a minute correctly ...........its so frustrating now i dont feel like studying for my other exam . ill end up getting a 94 which isnt bad but isnt an improvement either. i just feel very sad and depressed . i could have gotten a 100.
the type of mistakes I make are like getting the right answer in the working out 'box' (like 1/16 of the isotope has remained) but in the answer 'box' I write something that hasn't even showed up on the test (like 9/20) its left a lot of teachers scratching their heads trying to figure out how I got it and I really want to avoid that.
Such a helpful video, Thomas! I've been watching your videos for a while, but this might be my first comment. Just wanted you to know that there's someone in Brazil reading, watching and listening to all of your advices very carefully. Thank you a lot, buddy! PS: You're handsome, cute and your eyes are beautiful. :P
Came here after screwong up a retest bc I swapped the numbers in my diagram and messed everything up. Great shame going into class the next day. It really sucks
thank you so much Thomas you're the best... i feel like crying 'cause i was about to give up on my studies. Everybody keeps saying I am an intellectual and that I am smart but I could never really get my studying on par. I am studying Electrical and Electronic Engineering and I am sooooo anxious that i might fail, ive quit going to class because i cant really " time manage" anything. but thank you, your videos have really brought bac some of the diligence I had back in High School. So Kudos to you man and please dont stop. One Topic I would like you to give tips on is " Tips on How to Manage school time and weightloss schedule" for example. or just extracurricular activities. plus for someone like me who has 8:00am- 19:00 pm class everyday and still want to lose weight but am too self conscious to workout in the afternoon and dont get enough sleep if i wake up in the morning.
Hi Thomas! I was wondering if you have any suggestions on what I can do on a study break so I don't not start back studying at all lol (this could be a video suggestion too). I also know this has very little to do with this video sorry :/. Thanks!!
well in exam times i prepare everything and in my routine i should have to study for 18 to 19 hours and finally i sit to give my exam but the main problem of mine is that i hurry a lot and then i make small kind of mistakes but i dont really want to make so from now on i will follow ur 3 out of 10 methods bcoz those 7 methods are kind of regular activity for me bcoz i do it
Thank God you exist!! 😮😮 your videos have helped me so much. It's my first year in college and I'm studying IT engineering (not sure if that's what it's called in English). could you give me some advice on how not to feel lost and more confident in an environment where everyone is so competitive (generally they know a lot about programming than I do) while I'm just a beginner..
i got 9 on my exam and i needed only 1,5 point to get 10 😩 the thing that makes me cry is that i understand all of the material, i just make way to many silly mistakes
The most useful tip here it to try to finish a test 5 mins early to double check i ve actually realised this alone but ive never been able to actually achieve it i should probably take a watch w me
2. Double Checking is not for everyone! It happened to me that I changed an answer into the wrong one. What I like to do is, if I cannot answer something directly I drwa a little line or whatever beside the number and move on. After I'm done with the safe points I go back and do the hard tasks. Saves time and gives confidence.
"cut down on test anxiety" dude... that's not really a choice

I could have used that scratch paper tip yesterday. Now I'm wondering if i made that mistake. Hmm oh well...
Loi-Renee Letts I bet you did great - just keep it in mind for future tests! :)
I literally just failed an exam because of an 2-8+2=-5
I just word vomit and pour everything I've learned on the paper when doing essay tests
I'm gonna use my finger and move it through the text as I'm reading the question to not get lost.
Oh god please speak slower I'm not good enough in English
I just had an English exam and there I came across my biggest mistake which is not managing my time I had to write a 5 paragraph essay in less than 30 min cause I took too much time at the reading part 💔💔
Hi Thomas, what do you know about speed reading or speed learning?
I did simple differentiation wrong 😭 I am depressed now
ummmmm. I'll have to work on that beard thing...
Sorry this is probably not related to the video. But eversince my increase in workload at school, I constantly feel like I'm just stuffing facts into my head, and never really have the time or energy to analyze what I'm doing. I feel like there's no time for "critical thinking", do you have any suggestions? Thanks you!
What if you don't have time to double check?
this test i reallyyyyyyyyyy wanted a 100 in math but i made silly mistakes while writing formula ..but when i got home i could solve it in a minute correctly ...........its so frustrating now i dont feel like studying for my other exam . ill end up getting a 94 which isnt bad but isnt an improvement either. i just feel very sad and depressed . i could have gotten a 100.
yeah sure Ill go over my APUSH test when she gives me a 45 minute time constraints and there's 45 questions each with a primary source.
that korra reference lmao
Sigh, i wish i watched this earlier today!! Just noticed I made three small errors on my exam....DARN IT ALLLL
the type of mistakes I make are like getting the right answer in the working out 'box' (like 1/16 of the isotope has remained) but in the answer 'box' I write something that hasn't even showed up on the test (like 9/20) its left a lot of teachers scratching their heads trying to figure out how I got it and I really want to avoid that.
I can't stop misreading math paragraphs. In my country they are a page long math problems and so many words and other numbers etc. So confusing
thank you so much Thomas you're the best... i feel like crying 'cause i was about to give up on my studies.
Thanks!!
well in exam times i prepare everything and in my routine i should have to study for 18 to 19 hours and finally i sit to give my exam but the main problem of mine is that i hurry a lot and then i make small kind of mistakes but i dont really want to make so from now on i will follow ur 3 out of 10 methods bcoz those 7 methods are kind of regular activity for me bcoz i do it
i making mistakes in MCQ inspite of knowing the answer 100 %.if i doubt then i lose marks.
Thank God you exist!! 😮😮 your videos have helped me so much. It's my first year in college and I'm studying IT engineering (not sure if that's what it's called in English). could you give me some advice on how not to feel lost and more confident in an environment where everyone is so competitive (generally they know a lot about programming than I do) while I'm just a beginner..
i got 9 on my exam and i needed only 1,5 point to get 10 😩 the thing that makes me cry is that i understand all of the material, i just make way to many silly mistakes
hey thanks...my exams gonna be in April...I'll follow all the tips of yours..thank u so much
As soon as I head legend of Korra, I immediately hit subscribe and the thumbs up
The most useful tip here it to try to finish a test 5 mins early to double check i ve actually realised this alone but ive never been able to actually achieve it i should probably take a watch w me
flareon hahahaha! thanks a lot for the tips
slow down but like... also go fast
I'm definitely going to use tip number 10 :D. By the way, 350 likes at the moment, I was nr. 350 ^^.
Scotty and Kirk had a quite elegant dance around time estimation.
I used f(x) = x instead of f(x) = x²
I have 7th grade ELA finals today in 2 hours D:
+Das Hexxchen I went to a few english exams in a Diploma course in English
Gawd I do that ALL the time.
the fact that the us has these a-d tests (idk what they are called) is ridiculous to me. why not an analysis or similiar formats?
you would be a fantastic teacher/professor. I wish I came across your channel in high school
