*Fun Fact:* Mary Katherine Gallagher was not invented by a team of SNL writers. Molly was performing as Mary Katherine, Sally O’Malley & other original characters long before she was on SNL. I’ve been listening to the audio version of Molly Shannon’s new memoir, “Hello Molly!” (Narrated by her) & I have to say that if you can, *get her book.* Personally I recommend the audio version because I think it’s so much funnier when read by her. It sounds cliche but it’s a very inspiring, uplifting book (despite some truly sad parts) and it made me laugh & cry. *I can’t recommend it enough!* 😉
OMG! It was SOOO good, wasn't it? I loved hearing her on David Spade and Dana Carvey's podcast, Fly on the Wall.
I think I'll check it out
Reading it now.🤩
I have been listening to her audio book since yesterday. Wow, not only is she funny, but she tells many surprising stories that are enjoyable. I'm going to hate finishing the book, and I already appreciate Molly more.
That was back when cast members actually had talent
The entire sketch is golden… Not to mention Will Ferrell’s “message in a Bottle” opening . Still gets me….
For all the tragedy she faced in her life when young, she still has the ability to make others laugh out loud. Just love her.
Oh l didn’t know :(
Yeah ok guy
Lol the kick lady
I never knew.
I have to Google her, as I never knew her hardships. Loved her ❤ skits so mucho.
This came out when I was in high school and my best friend and I tried to recreate this nearly every day in the halls....at a Mennonite high school. Good times!
I can't figure out which was more incredible, that she never seriously hurt herself doing these sketches, or that her glasses never fell off doing these sketches.
She always had bruises, lol. You can see them in all the other sketches she does. But she is a fantastic, physical comedian
Or both.
I always thought those were fake chairs?!!!!! She said they were REAL..omg...
in my forties i'd see her skating onstage on a folding chair and my knees screamed.
@@agonistes06 I know that feeling!
She brought that Chris Farley physical energy/ comedy to every scene.
There’s a great story in her book about this. They almost cut it and never rehearsed it…so she went out and killed it knowing it was her only shot.
Just finished the audiobook for the second time, loved it so much, read by her! Came looking for this skit with the metal chairs!! Back to video! 🤣😊
We all Got One Shot!
They should have cut it. This is trash!
@@gumbyshrimp2606 awww someone’s mad about that Kamala video with Mary Katherine Gallagher huh 😆 CRY.
You can tell Molly is really committed by all the bruises she has. I think she is one of the best physical comedians that has ever been on SNL... Up there with Farley. Mary Katherine Gallagher kills me.
She talks about her physical comedy in Conan's latest podcast.
@@trumfit yea i listened to it today
She said that she was very self-destructive during this part of her life.
Seeing her launch herself into those chairs showed me her level of commitment, damn!
@@sugarsorelet’s not forget the original stumbler on the show, Chevy Chase
She truly is a superstar! So funny and original. She really did make the very best of a difficult childhood. You just want to tell her thank you, Molly for your work as an entertainer.
this was the first ever MKG sketch. molly fought so hard to get it on the show. it was originally slated for near the end,but she killed it in dress rehearsal and it got moved to the top of the show. it shows what can happen when you really throw yourself into your work.
Thank you for letting us know that. I love her.
wow you're so cool. you listen to howard stern's interview then come here and regurgitate what was said to get likes. what a douchebag.
In her case, literally.
You read her book!
@@HellaTL lol no, i cheated. i listened to her on the howard stern show a couple of weeks ago. i will get the book though. i love behind the scenes stories of SNL.
Gabriel is a pro. Didn't crack a smile or even hesitate. That's one Irish heavy parish- Patrick Connolly, Mary Katherine Gallagher, Sean O'Reilly.... Jayzus, Meery and Juseph!!
I don't know how Gabriel Byrne kept a straight face throughout this sketch. She was so committed and believable.
😂 Exactly! He came close in the first armpit section... I would have...😭😂
Message in a bottle by the Policeman 😂😂
@@tonistevens763his Stoic Irish persona goes well with SNL. Quite like how Liam Neeson plays on the show.
The bit with the clipboard is hilarious!
Just happened upon this and glad I did. Her delivery , posture , tone of voice , manerisms, and ENERGY are straightforward, pure, bottomless, bizarre sincerity, and so wide reaching .
Is there anyone that cannot relate to one part of this character? I hope not.
I don't know how old this is but it has me cracking up. truly genius.
This woman...is a genius!!! ❤❤❤ this is one of the funniest characters that's ever graced our TV screens 😂😂.
😂😂😂 she deserved the movie Superstar
The way she slides that last chair off stage as she backs away kills me every time
Lmao I know right, and then she falls back on stage 😂😂
How Gabriel Byrne keeps a straight face in this, I just don't understand. Shows what a great actor he is.
Yes and he stayed in character at the end when he was letting her (really) catch her breath.
The OG skit! We had this episode on VHS and watched it all the time.
Man, the bruises she gave herself twice a Saturday for years! Now that…… is a SUPERSTAR!
That monologue appears NOWHERE in either Betty Broderick TV movie...not the original ‘Betty Broderick: A Woman Scorned’ nor in the 1994 sequel ‘Betty Broderick: Her Final Fury’...very creative and dramatic tho 😂😂😂
Physical comedy at its best!
That poor thing is covered in bruises! She’s so amazing, and it’s sad we didn’t get to see more of her over the years! She’s a lot like Lucille Ball in that her comedy is so natural & physical! What a treat to see Gabriel Byrne doing comedy! Even at 64, he is still one of my very few celebrity crushes (Plus Kevin Costner & Bill Paxton)!
Omg this one of the BEST characters on SNL!! I love the undies she’s wears with the damn skirt, hilarious 😂🤣
"CONTROL YOURSELF FOR GOD SAKE WOMAN!" lolol
This is the one of the best characters of SNL. Thanks for laughs you have given for so many years!!!
Hey Lisa, I see that you just commented 3 days ago. If you haven’t done so yet, you should read Molly Shannon’s book… Hello Molly. I’m just nearing the end of it. Fantastic story of her life with lots of great “behind the scenes” of SNL.
@@stanleyspedowski2518 Thank you very much for your suggestion. I will definitely have to read it!
You can always tell someone has talent at SNL when they can convince you of being a child and make you laugh.
I don't know why I always end up coming back to watch this one
It's her very best
Gabriel Byrne
Great to see Gabriel Byrne in SNL!
I’m reading her memoir, “Hello, Molly!” now, and it’s great.
She is awesome. The total commitment to that performance is inspiring.
There needs to be more Mary Katherine Gallagher skits...omg she's too gooooooood
there are a ton of them
@@roxyheart5517 lol meant to put more 😔
Mary Katherine ur my fav I absolutely luv u🙃😁😍💕♥️😋💙😍💜😘That's how I decide to watch SNL.. if ur on then bang a gong u get it on girl!!!***???💙😍💜😘♥️💙😍💜♥️💙
Have u ever seen the film 'superstar' Mary Katherine Gallagher film! Amazing and so funny 😅😅😅
@@SIZERRULE noooo I need to see it!
Did anyone else think that would have hurt, falling into the chairs? Haha
I'm thinking the same. But she might have a proper technique to do it.
I was wondering how she got the marks on her arms. That sudden leap into the chairs gave me the answers.
I’m reading her memoir currently and I’m at this part where she did this first sketch. She wanted to stand out so instead of falling over one chair like scripted, she fell into a bunch and they didn’t have padding. She was bruised and cut from it. SNL had to hire a stunt coordinator just for MKG sketches
I love the way Mary Katherine sings just like she did on the movie Superstar.
And the chairs part is also the same. SOOPASTAH!
@@MRG09100 this was filmed in 95, Superstar wouldn't be out for another 4 years.
Literally one bar of Will singing Message in a Bottle and is all I need to hear lol!
What a performance.
One of the greatest characters of all time.
She is brilliant.
Thank you UA-cam! Searched for these sketches on DVDs with no luck. Next to her Christmas skit with Whitney Houston, this is my favorite. Thanks for the laughs Mary Katherine Gallagher!
Molly Shannon plays a precocious teen girl so well. Mary Catherine Gallagher is such a great character. Mary's over-the-top trembling during her monologue is hilarious!
Edit: Just came from Stern's interview. Apparently she had been doing the character for years live before SNL. And she's completely right, it absolutely has to be done live. They didn't "get it" on paper. Her body language and energy are _everything._ And that spontaneous ovation when she stumbles off-stage was completely genuine. One of the best character debuts ever. And still the best one for how she used the metal folding chairs and the real sounds and Gabriel Byrne being the straight-man. Later they had to make the stunts safer and used canned sound effects.
Mary Katherine walked so Tina Belcher could run
Print the T-shirts
she's hilarious.loved her!
Interesting, that she's not doing monologue from "Betty Broderick Story", she just says whats going on in last scene (with own words)
Molly Shannon act so well omggggggg
Molly is the BEST ♥️♥️♥️ these were some of the best years of SNL 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
She has such talent! She was pure gold on Will & Grace. I always wonder how she does all that slipping and falling without getting hurt.
I have an amazing story. One day I was driving home, when all of a sudden the Lord came to me in spirit. I felt very close to Him. I knew if I asked him to play any song on the radio he would, I guess to bless my faith.
So I said "ok, Lord play "Come as you are by Nirvana".
I turned on the radio and the song started playing right there on the spot, perfectly…
I started getting flooded with chills like a waterfall, crying, and trembling.
He stayed with me for 10 minutes in my driveway. until I got outta the car.
A couple months after that I started getting amazing prayers answered way more often, because it helped me quit doubting when I pray and I was lined up with biblical instructions. It's 6 years later and I still get answered prayers in Jesus name.
This is creative and art! back when SNL didnt have an agenda and just worried about making people laugh.
Spot on
Molly Shannon does not get enough credit for being a badass at slapstick…..A+++++++++
She is soooo funny, this Mary Katherine Gallagher character is hilarious!
The Best!
i know she´s weird but i can´t stop looking at her, she makes me laugh and i dont know why, ok its because she´s crazy
I always had a humongous crush on Gabriel Byrne! Meeeeow!😻
You are not alone
This was the first appearance of MKG on SNL but she invented the character while a student at NYU
Similarly, Ferrell and Kattan came up with the Roxbury guys at groundlings. The original song was More and More by Captain Hollywood Project.
@@dylanherne6093 was that the original song they used when they came up with those characters?
@@hanne9170 Yes, at groundlings. When they brought the characters to SNL, they used What is Love.
"Sending out a message in a bottle.....by The Policemen."
with Sting Operation.
That girl is great!!!
Man she really sacrificed herself for this! Falling into those chairs had to hurt!
Gabriel Byrne every Irish person ever !!! Would ya ever control yourself there ! Good girl lol !!! Brilliant !!
Listening to her talk about her life on Howard Stern, my fave..appreciate your candor Molly!!! Thanks..so important to talk about NOT being closeted in the USA.
i don’t know how Gabriel can stay in character. 😂😂😂😂
:)
Never see comedies like this again. SNL is unwatchable today. These skits are priceless!!! 🤣♥️💫
Love Gabriel Byrne
You are not alone
This absolutely kills me....so freakin funny~
Best audition I have ever seen she could audition for me too!!!
Molly is the most talented cast member of all time on SNL.
@Aiyana Kaynak I AGREE 100 PERCENT!
That might be a bit too extreme, but she certainly deserves a seat in -Olympus- Valhalla!
Jan Hooks gets my vote.
She's very talented and very funny, but *most* talented / SNL / all-time? No. Kristen Wiig / Jan Hooks are ahead of her. Molly is on the next tier, with Maya Rudolph.
GILDA was the first
Mary Katharine Gallagher is GORGEOUS. Well this Englishman fancies her💝
Irish
@@dorarouzi I think that John Walters is saying that HE is English, not Gabriel
"sending out a message in a bottle" lololol
By the Policemen. 😂
i hope she didnt sustain any injury while being in this character
She is a Superstar 💪🏾😎❤
Welcome back as host to SNL, Molly Shannon!!!
Aka ‘Superstar’
SUPERSTAR!!!
Love them both 💕 she is so talented and Gabriel ...he doesn't need introduction. Please read Molly biography..
Her favorite made for tv movie
“Sometimes when I get nervous I stick my hands under my arms and then I smell fingers like that”.
-Molly Shannon
aka ‘SUPERSTAR’
I guess Mary Katherine had a lot of bruises later after those chairs...😅😅😅
thing is, you really believe it, that's how good Molly is
She chose to be a comedian bc she def could’ve done any genre acting she’s so good!
I just found her book at a book sale I’m so happy I found it reading now
Thank you, Matthew Scott
Love you so much Molly!
She's freaking amazing!!! 😂
Excellently played! Hilarious XD
That is actually quite brilliant skit
Molly Shannon was so funny. I love every character she played.😂😂😂😂👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻❤️
I remember really liking SuperStar as a kid bc of this character, I only read recently that the movie bombed. I guess it’s just nostalgia.
So fun watching this after reading an advance copy of Molly Shannon's book!
MY FAVORITE VIDEO i watch it ALL THE TIME!
Gorgeous.
She knows how to make an entrance! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I love how Irish actors go full on leprachaun diddly dee for Americans 🤣🤣🤣
Listing to her bio, "Hello Molly!" It's awesome! Love Molly soooo much!!
lmaoooo the way she repeats words i can’t😂😂
"The Sun Bearly Rises" I love it.
Genius.
Cookie as the craziest bird, but that monologue sent shivers down my spine. Now, on the n'th repeat!
What a great time this was for SNL.
Love MKG. Lorne Michaels/SNL can kick rocks.
This is like watching myself as a kid 😂
5:32 SUPERSTAR!!!
Lol Crazy ass woman lol 😂! Totally one of my favorites on SNL lol 😂.
Iconic. 🏆💯👑
Been trying to find that scene in the Mary Baxter Birney movie.
Molly is the best at slap stick comedy, her & Farley
