*Fun Fact:* Mary Katherine Gallagher was not invented by a team of SNL writers. Molly was performing as Mary Katherine, Sally O’Malley & other original characters long before she was on SNL. I’ve been listening to the audio version of Molly Shannon’s new memoir, “Hello Molly!” (Narrated by her) & I have to say that if you can, *get her book.* Personally I recommend the audio version because I think it’s so much funnier when read by her. It sounds cliche but it’s a very inspiring, uplifting book (despite some truly sad parts) and it made me laugh & cry. *I can’t recommend it enough!* 😉
I have been listening to her audio book since yesterday. Wow, not only is she funny, but she tells many surprising stories that are enjoyable. I'm going to hate finishing the book, and I already appreciate Molly more.
Gabriel is a pro. Didn't crack a smile or even hesitate. That's one Irish heavy parish- Patrick Connolly, Mary Katherine Gallagher, Sean O'Reilly.... Jayzus, Meery and Juseph!!
This came out when I was in high school and my best friend and I tried to recreate this nearly every day in the halls....at a Mennonite high school. Good times!
I can't figure out which was more incredible, that she never seriously hurt herself doing these sketches, or that her glasses never fell off doing these sketches.
She truly is a superstar! So funny and original. She really did make the very best of a difficult childhood. You just want to tell her thank you, Molly for your work as an entertainer.
You can tell Molly is really committed by all the bruises she has. I think she is one of the best physical comedians that has ever been on SNL... Up there with Farley. Mary Katherine Gallagher kills me.
this was the first ever MKG sketch. molly fought so hard to get it on the show. it was originally slated for near the end,but she killed it in dress rehearsal and it got moved to the top of the show. it shows what can happen when you really throw yourself into your work.
@@HellaTL lol no, i cheated. i listened to her on the howard stern show a couple of weeks ago. i will get the book though. i love behind the scenes stories of SNL.
Just happened upon this and glad I did. Her delivery , posture , tone of voice , manerisms, and ENERGY are straightforward, pure, bottomless, bizarre sincerity, and so wide reaching . Is there anyone that cannot relate to one part of this character? I hope not.
That poor thing is covered in bruises! She’s so amazing, and it’s sad we didn’t get to see more of her over the years! She’s a lot like Lucille Ball in that her comedy is so natural & physical! What a treat to see Gabriel Byrne doing comedy! Even at 64, he is still one of my very few celebrity crushes (Plus Kevin Costner & Bill Paxton)!
That monologue appears NOWHERE in either Betty Broderick TV movie...not the original ‘Betty Broderick: A Woman Scorned’ nor in the 1994 sequel ‘Betty Broderick: Her Final Fury’...very creative and dramatic tho 😂😂😂
Hey Lisa, I see that you just commented 3 days ago. If you haven’t done so yet, you should read Molly Shannon’s book… Hello Molly. I’m just nearing the end of it. Fantastic story of her life with lots of great “behind the scenes” of SNL.
Thank you UA-cam! Searched for these sketches on DVDs with no luck. Next to her Christmas skit with Whitney Houston, this is my favorite. Thanks for the laughs Mary Katherine Gallagher!
I’m reading her memoir currently and I’m at this part where she did this first sketch. She wanted to stand out so instead of falling over one chair like scripted, she fell into a bunch and they didn’t have padding. She was bruised and cut from it. SNL had to hire a stunt coordinator just for MKG sketches
Mary Katherine ur my fav I absolutely luv u🙃😁😍💕♥️😋💙😍💜😘That's how I decide to watch SNL.. if ur on then bang a gong u get it on girl!!!***???💙😍💜😘♥️💙😍💜♥️💙
Molly Shannon plays a precocious teen girl so well. Mary Catherine Gallagher is such a great character. Mary's over-the-top trembling during her monologue is hilarious! Edit: Just came from Stern's interview. Apparently she had been doing the character for years live before SNL. And she's completely right, it absolutely has to be done live. They didn't "get it" on paper. Her body language and energy are _everything._ And that spontaneous ovation when she stumbles off-stage was completely genuine. One of the best character debuts ever. And still the best one for how she used the metal folding chairs and the real sounds and Gabriel Byrne being the straight-man. Later they had to make the stunts safer and used canned sound effects.
She's very talented and very funny, but *most* talented / SNL / all-time? No. Kristen Wiig / Jan Hooks are ahead of her. Molly is on the next tier, with Maya Rudolph.
Listening to her talk about her life on Howard Stern, my fave..appreciate your candor Molly!!! Thanks..so important to talk about NOT being closeted in the USA.
I came here after listening to Molly talk about this to David Spade and Dana Carvey on their podcast. She talks about how at dress rehearsal the sketch was at the end of the show because no one thought it would work. But they didn't anticipate her wild performance and apparently it killed at dress rehearsal. She said after dinner break she came back and they had moved the sketch to the top of the show. I know SNL has all the dress rehearsal footage because in recent years they often will play clips from it as a "cut for time" sketch that was still funny. I would LOVE for SNL to go back in the vaults and find the dress rehearsals for all of the famous sketches like this one. There must be hundreds of hilarious "first takes" that would be so fascinating to see.

That was back when cast members actually had talent
The entire sketch is golden… Not to mention Will Ferrell’s “message in a Bottle” opening . Still gets me….

For all the tragedy she faced in her life when young, she still has the ability to make others laugh out loud. Just love her.
Oh l didn’t know :(
Yeah ok guy
Lol the kick lady
I never knew.
I have to Google her, as I never knew her hardships. Loved her ❤ skits so mucho.
She brought that Chris Farley physical energy/ comedy to every scene.
I can't figure out which was more incredible, that she never seriously hurt herself doing these sketches, or that her glasses never fell off doing these sketches.
She always had bruises, lol. You can see them in all the other sketches she does. But she is a fantastic, physical comedian
Or both.
I always thought those were fake chairs?!!!!! She said they were REAL..omg...
in my forties i'd see her skating onstage on a folding chair and my knees screamed.

There’s a great story in her book about this. They almost cut it and never rehearsed it…so she went out and killed it knowing it was her only shot.
Just finished the audiobook for the second time, loved it so much, read by her! Came looking for this skit with the metal chairs!! Back to video! 🤣😊
We all Got One Shot!
They should have cut it. This is trash!

How Gabriel Byrne keeps a straight face in this, I just don't understand. Shows what a great actor he is.
Yes and he stayed in character at the end when he was letting her (really) catch her breath.

Omg this one of the BEST characters on SNL!! I love the undies she’s wears with the damn skirt, hilarious 😂🤣

Similarly, Ferrell and Kattan came up with the Roxbury guys at groundlings. The original song was More and More by Captain Hollywood Project.

"Sending out a message in a bottle.....by The Policemen."
with Sting Operation.
