Some cats like being by themselves. I have one of those. I had 3 cats, but when I moved out, I only took 2 because I knew the one cat wanted to be the only cat, and I was right. You're a certified cat parent. Everything that happened in this video was very relatable.
I also don't think it's necessary to get another cat, especially when you know their personalities.
I have an 11 year old black cat who's quite reserved and quiet, but then recently we adopted a kitten who's so hyperactive that it just clashes with my senior cats personality.
They're ok with each others presence now, but my senior definitely dislikes the surprise attack/ plays the young one keeps doing 😹😅

you're describing my girlfriend's house situation. she had a foster from the streets, VERY aggressive, very hateful, she lets me pet her LITERALLY once per like hour or 2. if you pet her like twice in a row she will attack fearlessly.
and tthen like last year or 2 years ago she got another cat, way younger, has that jovial energy, keeps attacking her and shit, and maria (the older one) doesn't really fuck with mila (the younger one) every day, but sometimes they will be sleeping close to one another (never touching i dont think) and they kinda have that like love hate relationship.
but honestly even with the surprise attacks and all that, i feel like maria is better off with mila because of all the hours that the house is empty. regardless of how much they like being alone, having someone else there for like the 16h that we spend outside is good for them

    Heyy,
I would look at Kurt's personality how tolerant he is towards another cat. He may not like the cat or even attack and hurt him (which can happen with cats). Of course it can also be that he needs a friend and he enriches his life (after his owner of course haha). I also have a cat and am considering getting another cat. Mine is a very tolerant cat, but I have often seen other cats attack and hurt him. That's why I decided not to get a cat for now.
What i would definitely advise you to do is: Don't suddenly bring another cat next to Kurt. He should get used to him slowly because cats are very attached to their territory
    Good luck ☺️🐱

In nature both big and small kitties are almost always solitary creatures, with an exception for lions. They can certainly learn to coexist with other cats even learn to like them. However, cat's vert rarely actually NEED friends. And in some cased bringing another cat into the household can do more harm than good to the kitty too. So sure, it could work...we have more than one cat ourselves. And while they get along and such, I wouldn't call them buddies either. So yeah, a lot of other pets usually do better with buddies and some shouldn't be alone. Like gunieapigs for example, some birds and such. But pets like cat's can be just as happy, and more often happier if they're an only cat who get's all the attention from the humans.

Some cats like to have companions, others do not. Especially if they have spent a huge part of their life as the only pet in the house, they may not mingle with other pets easily. Thas why introducing a friend is always better at kittenhood. That being said, adult cats can infact befriend new cats/kittens, if introduction is done properly. However the change in personality you mentioned is a very likely thing to happen, whether or not introduction goes well.
If you do get a second cat then for about a week keep it in a room Kurt doesn't hang out much in. Then slowly Introduce scent by shaping their blanket or a single toy.
Later during feeding times, food can be kept on either side of the door, thereby making both cats associate the other with something positive.
After a while of doing this, you can finally let them see each other for a span of few minutes under your monitoring. Make sure they have plenty of food so they don't feel like their food is threatened and that they have places they can climb onto , if they feel threatened by the cats presence. You can also play with them while doing this.
If all goes well, then you can do this everyday and gradually increase the time they spend together until you feel that they are fully used to eachother and would not attack.
In that case you can let them spend some time without monitoring and gradually allow them to spend more time without monitoring.
If they show aggression, immediately separate them and give them more time just eating food on either side of the door until you feel like you can reintroduce them again.

Yeah I can only imagine how difficult that must have been.. getting 2 additional cats after you’ve had one cat for 14 years is certainly not the best idea.. it’s highly encouraged for cat owners to either adopt/buy cats in a pair or if you have one cat and want another, you should do it as early on in your cats life as possible as it’s far easier for them to adjust when they’re young.

I can relate to this scenario, I got my first cat in August 2019 and until November 2021 he was an only "child" and was totally reliant on me. I didn't have the luxury to work remotely or not at all so I was gone 10-12 hours a day. I started to notice him changing like losing interest in play, becoming lethargic and depressed. I ended up adopted an 8 year old orange medium hair cat from a foster home of a rescue organization. The perfect answer for both as they both came to life and today they are besties and inseparable. I pay attention equally individually and together but they also have each other. Best decision.

  • @sadiedol4413
    @sadiedol4413 Рік тому +3

Introducing cats takes time. In the foster homes I bring cats too, we start by bringing over a blanket or toy that smells like the foster cat so the resident cat can smell it and learn the scent, become comfortable with it for a few days. After that, we choose a room in the house (usually a spare bedroom) the foster can stay in for maybe 5-7 days so they can hear and smell each other. Then we'll open or remove the door and install a diy baby-blocker of sorts. Tbh the best is if you can afford some plexy glass or a big sheet of clear plastic and drill some holes in it. Then they can see each other in addition to smell. But not everyone has that option so sometimes we'll do "monitored visits" where we bring the resident cat in the room the foster cats in and we do whatever makes resident cat comfortable. For example, I'll let resident cat sit on my lap and pet them while they observe the foster cat. Letting them sit on me in the new cats presence is like the feline way of saying "mine". It was their house first, so to convince them to get along with the new cat we need to establish new cat isn't a threat and trying to steal their human or their space. We'll do visits like that once a day for a week or so and then move up to a next level that's more specific to your situation. Either your cat adapts quickly and will explore the room- smell new cats stuff, interact with new cat- or theyll shy away. Depending on what they do, I'll either leave them to spend more time together, I'll open the door completely for them to wander out, or I'll put a cat tent in the living room or a room the resident cat spends most their time in. The cat tent is great for if resident cat needs more time to adjust- this way the new cat can be seen and heard and smelled in resident cats space without being intrusive or "stealing" their territory. These methods work with any aged cat you bring into the home. But keep in mind that bringing a kitten into an adult cats home is different than bringing an adult cat into an adult cats home. Kurt could adopt the kitten, befriend it, or find it annoying or even a threat altho that last one is least likely tbh. Kurt could befriend an adult cat or even develop a relationship of sorts but that typically takes longer bc a cat of equal or greater size is more of a threat. Personally, I would suggest a cat that's calm and physically smaller. Could be female or male. Idk how Kurt reacts to different genders- has he ever met other cats? Maybe you have friends with cat(s) you could do a test run with? Or maybe you could try fostering a cat or kitten until they find a forever home (usually only between 2 weeks and 4 months). That would allow you to witness his reaction and prep him for someone new entering his territory

Sure you can, I have an orange tabby that I also got early in the pandemic as a kitten - same story. Rescued a much younger kitten a year later and she was very scared and unsure of everything. My resident cat basically raised her and took care of her. They bonded together quite well, you can tell they're not siblings since they don't like to be together all the time but they'll groom each other and sometimes sleep next to each other. So I think if you don't try, you probably won't know 😅

They will be territorial at first, after you give them a little time, they will be chill at each others presence. My cat is a lot like yours and when I got my 2nd one, she wasn’t very happy. She hissed a lot and acted differently. But one I started feeding them together/near each other they started getting comfortable. So don’t be afraid to get Kurt a friend and you can always try to resolve behavioral issues with your vet. I definitely don’t regret my decision. Now my little ones burn of their zoomies with each other and snuggle when I am gone. Best of luck!

It really depends on the cat. Personally, I’ve owned cats that never ever got along with any other cats no matter how much time had passed. I also own a cat that needed a companion even if he didn’t originally have one (he had some major anxiety and adopting another cat has helped him out a lot). I’d put some real consideration into this as it’s a pretty big deal to bring another pet home. Also, I would do some research on the health of another cat if you are considering one. Cats can easily transfer certain illnesses to one another so make sure you find out their bloodwork before you adopt! Don’t accidentally put Kurt at risk. If he’s a good, healthy boy then make sure his future roommate (if you get one) is also good and healthy.

From experience a new cat can change your cat a lot for the better or the worse. But in my experience it was mostly good. And Kurt does have a lot of separation anxiety when he’s not with you so I think if another cat works out it could help him with his loneliness.
Kurt might be wary or even scared at first if a new cat but that doesn’t always mean they will be like that forever. It may take time.
But you gotta watch them closely cause they may be uneasy. You don’t want Kurt to feel violated or unsafe cause the new cat is in his spots or something. But also to prevent a intense cat fight.
But I personally think Kurt would enjoy a new cat friend to keep company.
My two cats that were at first very much disliked each other now love each other and I couldn’t imagine them without each other.
But it took time with my two, and they did hiss and growl. But we made sure they could have separate locations if they wanted to be alone and completely away from the other. There needs to be a safe space for both cats so they are able to hide and not worry about the other cat intruding. Like you said they are territorial.
But you’ll never know unless you try!
And it could go perfectly and Kurt adopts them immediately 😂

I feel like for the reason you stated - HOW reliant he became on you emotionally is EXACTLY why you should get another. I used to have so much guilt when I’d leave the house and my poor baby boy was left all alone. Without fail he’d be waiting at the door, meowing frantically at my return 💔 You’re right it needs to be the RIGHT kitten, but NO kitty is going to change your guys dynamic. Me and my first are still glued to each others hips - But my baby gingy that we got when he was 1, is now everything to us, too. My older boy will still put him down when he gets too frisky 😅 But also grooms, teaches, and keeps him in order too ❤️ Both you AND Kurt have plenty more love to give ❤️❤️❤️

A second cat can provide companionship and reduce feelings of loneliness and boredom for your current cat, especially when you're not at home. As an owner of SIX cats, I can prove this.
But the decision to get a second cat should be based on your cat's individual personality, your living situation, and your willingness to commit to providing a happy and harmonious environment for both felines.

My 2 year old cat was the same, he was used to being the only cat in the house but he seemed lonely so we got him a kitten (the shelter recommended to adopt a kitten so that my cat won't feel threatened by him, also kittens a very young so they have not had much interaction with other cats therefore are very moldable and can easily get used to the other cats). The first day they met the older cat hissed at my kitten but now they groom each other and love spending time together. Definitely consider getting another cat!

You’d be surprised about how adaptable kittens are! I know it’s a scary thought to bring a completely new cat into your home where Kurt has reigned supreme as the sole owner of the home since the beginning.. it will most certainly take an adjustment period for Kurt and a new cat to get used to each other. I personally believe it’s worth it and they’ll end up being inseparable but it’s all good if you don’t! I’m sure Kurt will be more than happy to be your one and only cat 🐈

Having a second cat is good, it helps with companionship provided your cat isn't highly territorial. I would recommend getting a kitten so Kurt doesn't see them as a direct threat to his space. All of the cats my parents had were territorial, but chill with each other because they didn't see them as competition.

Btw. cats can be reliant on someone specifically because there is no second cat. I would try it, but you nerd to find one with a character that would fit well with Kurt’s and it has to happen slowly (just short contacts through a net or a door etc.).

So if you do ever get another cat, i recommened getting one also the same age as kurt and i do recommened keeping them seperate once in a while if they dont like eachother at first.

I picked up my old girl (10-11) from the backyard and lived with her for a whole year before I picked up the boy cat (6 months) right before quarantine… he acts like I’m him momma best friend with the loves, the cuddles, and the playtimes but terrorizes my old girl from time to time… the first few months of introduction was hell on earth… but they have a mutual understanding now… kinda…

Kurt actually isn’t aggressive to Kurt number two - that’s how cats play fight! Like dogs, he isn’t being vocal, doesn’t have his hair raised, and isn’t showing signs of distress while ‘attacking’ him. That’s a possible indicator that Kurt might do well with another feline buddy who would be happy to engage in his antics.
Of course always play it safe though. Maybe you can arrange for Kurt to meet another cat that is friendly in a controlled environment. Also as many people have suggested, you could foster a kitten temporarily (foster fail is always an option too if you fall in love lol).
Some cats love others cats, some don’t. We adopted both of my cats together when they were kittens and they used to play all the time but now one of them is always jealous of the other lol

I took my cat to the vet. He asked questions like would I get another cat bc I love the idea of 2 cats, but my cat is the same as Kurt (personality). The vet told me to get a male kitten. With my cat, but I think you should get a cat when Kurt is older and maybe he won’t rely on you so much anymore.

The cost of owning a cat per month is around $30-$60. If you count litter, food, toys and water. Then if you account for shots per year and vet visit. That’s around $250…sooo cats are around $1,000-$1,200 a year to own.

If you get another cat, Abram, it should be a kitten. Kurt will have an easier time bonding with the kitten, and the kitten's energy will rebound on to Kurt and make him super playful.

If you want another cat but you're worried that it'll stress Kurt out, foster a kitten for a week (a kitten instead of an older cat because it'll stress him out less i won't see it as much of a threat.) Introduce them like you'd introduce him to a cat you'd be keeping permanently - a lot of positive reinforcement until they start to get comfortable around eachother. For every positive interaction Kurt has with the kitten, reward him. Don't expect him to like the foster kitten at first but if he starts showing signs of being comfortable around another cat and it's not negatively changing his personality then it might be good to get another cat for him. Always remember to foster from a place that allows their foster animals to be with other pets!

about the second cat, you can first separate them in different rooms, so kurt get his room (preferably his favorite spot) and the other cat gets another. after a while you can slowly introduce them together, maybe start by getting the two on opposite sides of one door, letting them get used to each other's scents. once they no longer show signs of aggression and start playing with each other through the crack of the door, you can try opening the door just a bit so they can see each other. make sure to moderate them so they dont end up fighting 👍

You could try fostering another cat or kittens if there is a reliable foster-based rescue organization near you :)
I fostered cats for many years and ended up adopting my cat Maisy as a foster fail :P She's had a few other cats come and go but has lived alone with me for the last couple years since I had to move and stop fostering. She is wary of other cats for a little bit after she firsts meet them (she has always been a scaredy cat) but she has a couple of cat friends now that she stays with when I'm away and definitely seems to enjoy playing with them! She's still super snuggly and always happy to see me when I come home tho, and definitely still follows me around the house lol

Yes I do I have have a suggestion because I have two cats and one of them were a kitten when we introduced him to our seven month cat they were not very friendly to each other at first so what you need to do is put the new cat in the carrier so and then let them sniff each other from inside the carrier and outside the carrier that way they get used to their sense and then and then when they stop growling or getting angry at each other you are going to open the cage and let them sniff each other allowing them to See each other and get a better image of each other so that way they get used to it they go
