It's because, from what little I've seen, Seiko doesn't offer design elements similar to Daniel Wellington, MVMT and other fashion watches.
Only watches I've seen close in design to the minimalist trend that watch enthusiasts approve of is offerings from Orient, Junkers and Nomos.

Because the fashion watches have good advertising departments.
They push their brand so hard that people recognize the name and therefore assume they are good watches.

My Timex Easy Reader and Expedition are great, affordable daily wear watches for me. Casio and Caravelle watches work great for me too. I live in Seattle (very expensive city to live in) and I have a family. I don't have the extra cash to buy $500 to $1000+ watches. So I've found less expensive, solid quality alternatives that work great for me.

It all depends on how you define " Cheap " . I own couple of Casios ( MTP-1384D-2AVDF and MTL- 100L-2AVEF ) who would put to shame some of those " High End Timepieces " when it comes to fit , finish , beauty and reliability . The second one also came with a sapphire crystal .

You never hit on another reason why people buy fashion watches, and I think it's important. They buy them because they like how they look, or make them feel. Sure, you can spread awareness of the bajillion models Seiko has in the affordable category, but a lot of people don't care about the significance in horology, the heritage, or anything else about it.

It's unbelievable how stupid most watch enthusiasts are.
A watch's movement shouldn't be a factor in picking a watch, unless you're knee-deep in the watch game.
The appearance of the watch is what counts.
Quartz IS SO MUCH BETTER than mechanical, particularly at an inexpensive price point.
Seiko 5s and SKXs are SO THICK & HEAVY.
Who gives a shit if they're automatic? They don't look good.
Would you take a Seiko 5, with its big heavy unrefined movement, over a Rolex OysterQuartz? GTFO!
MOST GUCCI WATCHES ARE _MUCH_ MORE BEAUTIFUL THAN SEIKO 5s AND Seiko SKXs.

    • @kingboyous

Aech Dee Ya, I’ve since noticed. Loreo, Pagani Design, Steel Dive, Sea-Gull, Parnis etc etc all have inexpensive nice-looking sports watches.
That said, I still prefer quartz as I like thin, thin watches on the whole & can’t afford Piaget etc, which boast thin mechanical movements.
I do have a few nice wind-ups, which are thin owing to their lack of rotor.
At the end of the day, aesthetic is what counts to me. I have the Parnis Datejust and Orient President because I like their designs. If they were quartz, even better!

For me an affordable watch is about $50-100, and in Denmark the SKX007 is almost $400, so that's a pretty big difference... I'm honestly considering buying an Invicta because I've seen some reviews both on UA-cam and on websites where do really well - so I've come to the conclusion that the reason for most of the bad reviews must be snobbery.
Also we have 14 days to try anything we buy on the web in Denmark, so if I don't like it I can always return it within those 14 days...

Quartz watches are typically lighter, more reliable, and more accurate especially if they have a trimmer condenser (it adjusts accuracy that everyone is absolutely hopelessly ignorant of [analog and digital]). Why would I buy anything else? Anyway, go for quality, accuracy, life expectancy, and materials relative to the price -- not necessarily the brand name. It's nice if the watch looks good, but it's really for telling the time and its features (alarm, timer, etc.). On the other hand, if you're, like, a plumber or construction worker then you might as well go for the absolutely least expensive digitals, and replace them when chewed up.

I looked because my wife showed me, I didn’t even know Gucci made watches. I have a BMW watch that has Swiss movement see through back shaped like the
speedometer on an old BMW R/69 motorcycle.the case and The watch separate being held by 4 ball bearing on the case. This is also because the crown is at the 6oclock position so the band is in front of the crown when it’s in the case. It’s very different I’ve never seen a watch like it. I feel different about watches made by care companies. Ferrari has some dope watches.these people make nice things.

I do wonder if watch snobs think the same of all the stuff they own? Do they have 400 dollar kitchen knives and wonder why people drive crap Camrys (thay work) instead of a Ferrari. A Pagani is a million dollars - that must make this 300 000 car a bargain.
IMHO - isn't Rolex overpriced too the extreme? A 200 000 dollar watch that look like a dress Certina. You can get 40-50 more interesting watches for that price. And you don't look like a used car salesman.

You make a good point. What needs to be addressed however, is purchase price ( cheap).... vs low-cost-but-still-good (cheap), meaning one would like to chase "high value" for a certain cost. Let me explain. For lovers of mechanical watches, look at Seiko's SNK 80X series at the entry level point of discussion....the last digit is dial color variation. Very rugged 7S26 movement, OK not hackable nor hand-windable ( its an automatic so wrist motion winds it)....but it is *incredible* that such a good watch is offered for as low as $50-$60. Your suggestion of the SKX007 is fine....but it has the SAME 7S26 movement, nicer detailing and better water resistance...but costs $250 or so. Fine if you need or want these extra features, but the SNK80X gets you there for much cheaper. If you want quartz instead, a Timex Weekender or Citizen BM8180-03E ( also is "solar").... gets you a good watch under $100. In contrast, a relatively expensive Michael Kors watch is expensive due to "outward design/ flash and dash", and is a terrible value costing much more than these other entry watches, but uses a common and cheap quartz movement used in $10-$20 watches. Buyer beware....get informed.

What about the "Citizen Men's 'Promaster Diver' Quartz Stainless Steel and Polyurethane Diving Watch, Color:Black (Model: BN0150-28E) "? I bought this watch due to its Eco Drive function. I bought this watch "Seiko Men's SKX007K Diver's Automatic Watch" and returned it because the day of the week showed up in English and Spanish (dont know why) and that the battery will need replacement. However, I liked the way the second hand moved on there better and it felt like a pretty nice watch. However, I think the watches above are so close in terms of design and function, that either will be good. Any ideas?

A G-SHOCK as my work watch
A casio edifice as my everyday watch
A Nixon sentry as a dress watch.
None have failed me, all for a whopping total $210. When I'm flush with disposable cash in the future I'll spend a decent amount on an omega speedmaster/seamaster or an IWC.

Talking cheap watches, I have a replica watch which is 12 years old and it runs and looks great.
I have a hamilton viewmaster and it is a great watch. I always get atleast 30% off on my hamilton's ... I have 6.
I had to pay MSRP for my rolex air king at the AD...no discounts there :(
I have gotten two discounts on Tudors but not on rolex at the AD.

Do you want to be a lemming or do you want to be an aficionado? Buy a Mont Blanc pen or a Porsche. Want to get the job done, buy a Toyota or a Japanese quartz watch for $20.

self/handwinding/hacking, rotating bezel, solid link bracelet and solid end links, day/date complications, AND (get this) a SAPPHIRE CRYSTAL! That’s right, all for the $250 price point! You can’t beat that man. But for $70? Ehhh, you’re really scraping the bottom of the barrel there big boy. You won’t get anything of quality/reliability from Seiko or Orient at that price point.

Some people think that owning a quality timepiece puts them in a category of watch enthusiast or part of a subculture, where they have to know everything about the watch like it’s history and the construction of it. I think people who put money into designer watches like Gucci and stuff know that they are buying a “brand” as oppose to a true timepiece. Maybe those people aren’t into watches but just want some accessory to show off with the hyped up logo. I don’t feel bad for those type of people whatsoever because they know what they are getting themselves into when they drop $500-1k on a watch of such quality. I personally don’t think there are right and wrongs to getting a watch, as long as you like it. I know it sucks to see a Gucci watch because it makes people like us cringe a little. Look at smart watches too, those type of folks probably aren’t into watches, but they have a watch on. That’s how I feel about the designer watches, it’s a totally different type of enjoyment to experience for people who actually pays attention to the true watches.

That's not what "value" means. Not at all.
"Value" is what people will pay for a thing. It is nothing more, and nothing less. The term has no meaning outside of that. What you are speaking of is "quality," and one should NEVER confuse the principles of value and quality.

I'll stick with a Vostok Amphibia for around $80.00. What more could anyone ask for in a watch? Very accurate, good looking, and can take any kind of treatment you can throw at it. Why waste money for something more costly? I guess i'm just a huge fan of Vostok watches. Even the Komandirskie is worth three times the cost in my opinion. And, one thing that gets me, is how popular many Seiko automatics are, that do not hand wind, and only have a 30M rating. No, i'll stick with Vostok....

Nice time pieces. But, it's just not my style of watch. I'm a two tone, gold dial type of guy. The first time I seen a two tone gold dial Rolex, I wanted one. Since, I'm not quite there to afford it, I try to find a watch close to it. Seiko two tone gold dial but that coast 3 to 4 bucks, so I'm looking at the same Seiko which has no gold dial as an altwu, Citizen two tone gold dial as well as Invicta two tone gold dial is what I'm seeing. All three are on Amazon and I can afford it. The Invicta and Citizen has the gold dial, Seiko doesn't. Then brands like Burei and Stughrling pop up during my two tone search. The prices are in between 35 to 100 bucks and they look way better and more luxurious, but I'm also looking at the quality because the watch I get is going to be my everyday watch...... So, which do you prefer as far as durability, longevity out of those 3 and the others I've mentioned being that I'm a two tone gold dial type of guy?
