    I just purchased a new Ugly Stick GX2 9ft Medium action Salmon style rod and paired it with a Quantum Optix 60 Spinning Reel. So, in this video, I thought I would demonstrate how I spool braided fishing line on to a spinning reel. Because braided line doesn't stretch like monofilament line does, it tends to slip on the spool because it is hard to tie it tight enough to make it stick. To combat this, most people use monofilament or fluorocarbon as a backer, but I like to use electrical tape instead.

    The only gripe I have with this reel is the weight, but that goes with the size of the reel ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . I brought this salmon fishing up in Oswego, NY. I coupled it with a Cabela's Whuppin Stick. I had no problem pulling in a 14lb salmon. I will probably use this for surf fishing this summer and downgrade to a 3500 series Battle II next salmon season to save my wrists. All of the operations are butter smooth and the bail is nice and thick and has a solid flip to it. Everything about this reel is sturdy and strong. The drag system held up to the salmon and was also super smooth. I did use a scale to set the drag properly before going out to the river and this worked out tremendously. A bunch of other guys on the river would hook up and snap almost immediately. Just because you have a good drag system doesn't do anything if you don't set it correctly.

    My braided line started slipping after about 3 years on the spool, thought the drag was burnt out, would just pull freely with bail locked and drag maxed out. Replaced my drag washers with carbon washers and still would pull freely. Saw a similar video and had a aha moment and noticed both the spool and the reel were not spinning together, which meant the braided line was slipping around the spool. Did the electrical tape trick and re-spooled with new braided line and it worked like magic.

    Thanks for sharing my friend, aren’t you afraid that the glue of the inside of masking tape after some period will mess the braided line, specially during hot days? It happened to me many times when I wrapped different things with masking tape, after couple summers to stack everything over it with glue impossible to remove. Never tried it on a spool with braided line though.

    Nice vid! I know you were only using that filler spool of braid, but the spool looked a bit underfilled to me. I can never tell for sure though. What do you think? Thanks for your efforts!

      Thanks for watching! And yes, you are right, 150 yds was a bit underfilled. I am guessing I could have spooled another 100 yds on this reel. Rule of thumb is to spool it to about 1/8" to no more than 1/16" from the edge of the spool.

    You need more line to bring it closer to the lip. When you cast the lip will slow down the speed of the line therefore limiting your distance

    Good idea using the tape as a filler has to be cheaper than line I’ve read some good enough reviews on the same reel u r using I live in Nebraska so no saltwater fishing just hopefully for big cats but always a good buzz for sure I’ve got a couple of rods that need reels if it’s good enough for you it’s gotta b good enough for me but I’ll one up u and put one or two extra passes of tape on my spool if I buy 150’ or maybe I’ll buy a big spool of braid decisions decisions

    You start your video by showing us an incorrectly filled spool. You can get much more line on that spool without any fear of wind knots- fill it just short of the spool rim taper. With that thick braid you have your casting distance will be severely reduced. I worked in a tackle shop for a few years and have spooled thousands of reels, with braid and mono.

    what about the whole issue of matching the direction that the line is coming off the spool, with the direction that the line is going on the reel?

    • @JerkingMyRodTV
      @JerkingMyRodTV  6 років тому

      As long as the spool is spinning as you reel instead of the line coming off the spool without it spinning, the line should be matching the direction. If that makes sense?

  • @kiteman357
    @kiteman357 5 років тому

    So your only filling your spool 3/4 or the way? Why wouldnt you use backing? You only had 150 yds or mtrs. You do know that the fuller the spool, the farther the cast? Less friction man.
