Fractured Teeth in Dogs

- Dr. Lera talks about fractured teeth in dogs with Mochi, a three-year-old German Shepherd.
Fractured teeth are a common occurrence in dogs and can result from external trauma (e.g., when hit by a car, or an object) or from chewing on hard objects such as antlers, bones, or other hard, non-bending chew toys. The most frequently broken teeth in the dog are the canine (fang) teeth, and the large upper pointy cheek teeth in the back of the mouth. Sometimes the fractured tooth results in a chip of the enamel (hard mineralized surface of teeth) and dentin (bony tissue beneath the enamel), and other times the tooth so fractured that the nerve is exposed to the outside. can dogs get filling like humans for example if a dog has 20 percent of the tooth broken can they just estimate how the tooth use to look and then put a silver cap over it
My dog chipped her tooth but you can not see the pulp and there is no blood or pain. Possibly sees dentin. My vet does not seem concerned but others situations she was not co cerned about and then days later became an issue and was much more expensive then ex: dew claw. It is not her canine nut the little tooth in front next to her canine enamel chip maybe can see dentin but no blood or pulp. What do I do? I was told a sealant or composite resin but vet say can be but not necessary and how much (range) is typical?
The biggest cost of that particular procedure is going to be getting the patient under general anesthesia the cost of sealing the tooth is not going to be the biggest portion of the cost. I can't tell you what it is that they will charge you in that area and that would be something that will vary dependent on rent, number of employees, how much the employees are paid, benefits that are provided, just to name a few variables
Hey Michelle, I am in the exact same situation as you right now. May I ask how your situation turned out? Did your dog get the sealant/composite resin and how did it all turn out? I'm so nervous on what decision to make.
My dog has a back tooth that looks like flesh on top of it. He seems ok but when we play he whimpers sometimes. He's almost 5 months old and I don't know if his adult teeth are already in or if it broke somehow
You would need to take him to your veterinarian and have them evaluated. Can't really give you any information on something like this unless I see it with my own eyes and even then sometimes it would still require dental X-rays
My puppy's one upper canine's tip got broken. She is 2.5 months old pup. Is there anything to worry? Will these canines fall out and new appear?
The canines will fall out but the problem is that if that tooth gets infected it can affect the adult tooth beneath it. Also it is a possibility that that fractured tooth can be very painful. the recommendation would be to have it evaluated by an oral surgeon and see what they suggest.
My pitbull broke his from escaping the cage
My dog broke bottom fang just little bit but now she drools badly why?
Because it is extremely painful
my dog has a crack that goes across her tooth (but not fully around). What can I do or ask the vet about it?
You will need to see someone who does dental x-rays on a regular basis and I would say is comfortable doing doing a root canal (not because your pet needs a root canal but because someone who is comfortable doing a root canal is more likely to know what they are talking about)
