  • Really bummed so far with this saw. It’s only a hope that a muffin mod can make this decent or at the worst it can be ok after port work but really not thrilled with the performance at all. A chainsaw needs a bit more power than this for 36 cc chainsaw.

      I think I mentioned the Stihl 250. Maybe it was the 440 husky (I ported one and have a video on the channel) I mentioned I don’t remember haha. I like the 250 best for an under 60cc chainsaw.

    I have had a number of 170s and 180s, and two 171s. I love the 171 for what it is- good anti vibe, light, little easier to work on than the 170s, bigger engine and more power. Does the 182 type have a cat in the muffler? prying that junk out and opening up the muffler sure wakes up an Echo 450 or Domar makita 4300, perhaps it might be similar.

    You would've been better off buying an MS 170 or 180. These new saws, the MS 162, 172 and 182 are made to comply with current emissions standards, which means they are designed to run incredibly lean. I just bought two 170's to put away, since they're phasing them out.

    I have very little time behind those homeowner saws. From what I experienced, open the exhaust way up and check for any restrictions on the intake. There’s usually some good restrictions built in that need to be removed with a dermal tool. I haven’t messed with the 182 though.
    How long have you been running Stihl Ultra? I lost 4 engines to it at 50:1 and I know a lot of people that have trashed engines at as low as 32:1. I’ve also known a few people who have run it for years and years without any problems.

      Yeah, I have the same 180, and I just got it out to clear up a small tree that fell across the driveway. It hadn’t been run in quite awhile, as its primary duty is light imbuing/ pruning, etc.
      It took about 7-9 pulls and once warmed up, ran well. These little saws love to smoke.
      My old Husky 345 only took 3 pulls to start, after sitting for quite awhile. Two different saws of course. I still kick myself I didnt pick up a one time buy of a 550xp Mk2, couple years ago, for $550.00, from the Stihl dealer. Beautiful saw as You know. Regrets… Take care

      @Sparaco487 4 місяці тому +1

      @georgedavall9449 you should definitely buy a 550 xp! But ill warn you its a true firewood tree work saw. Its very angry high reving and fast for a 50cc, it punches very well beyond what a normal 50 sized saw is expected to be.. i can bury its 18in bar in hard wood and it just chews its way screaming the whole way threw it, pretty hard to bog it out even with my care free low rakers filed down and it is grabby and jumpy that way. Id say if you can make it fit and careful with your rakers it'll pull a 24 bar

    I know this is about the 180- but I just got my first Sthil 170. I’d only had a couple Ryobi’s and a craftsman before this purchase. The 170 I believe is the smallest, tier 1 model- but over $100 more than any thing else I’d had. Performance, reliability, strength -for its size- I can’t complain. However-user friendly, not so much. For the hype and notoriety of the name, I expected the Cadillac model- base Cadillac, that is. Instead, I find simply cleaning it, keeping the air filter unobstructed, sharpening the chain/ flipping the bar- to be frustrating and a cumbersome chore I’d always looked forward to doing. Putting it back together, tightening the chain, general maintenance-is anything but easy. I find myself asking myself if I shoulda stuck with what I know. The only positive I really have so far is I dint get the goofy looks when I break it out like I did with the Ryobi. Not sure I cared about that enough to have paid an extra $100+ for a name.

    These things are literally weighed down by European and US emissions standards, the 2mix engines are heavier. You can get a lot more power out of the 180 by removing the baffle on the carburettor and opening up the exhaust as well as raising the needle valve slightly to give it a richer mixture.
