The lady with the pork bones was so excited that you spoke to her in her native language. She wanted to give you the food for free because she appreciated that you took the time to learn about the language and culture before visiting. You can see that the Chinese people cherish their culture and traditions. Just an awesome human connection from different sides of the world. You radiate positive energy. Love your content.
unbelievable u disrespect a woman who give u present. do u know where the pigs were kill? what 's the big deal it drops on ground? what about ur country's meat transportation? is it sterile and u don't wash them before cook?
For the woman selling the herbal medicine, she said that "it brings your heatiness down." Essentially means that it will balance out your yin and yang. I read an article a while back and i found it very interesting. In the Chinese culture there is coldness and heatiness, cold being cold things like cold water, ice cream; heatiness being spicy foods, salty foods. Drinking herbal medicine the lady was selling can balance out your yin(coldness) and yang(heatiness).
Chinese people are so kind and giving. The Chinese friends I have here in America who are going to college are exactly like that last girl, they never let me pay for anything.
Trevor James breaks the typical "American" stereotype of boisterous obnoxious foreigners. He smiles, knows their language and treats people with respect especially the elders. Keep on doing what your doing! Go Canada!
+Duskworker i think it's just that there are some people who go to another country to try out the local foods only to be rude whether it was intentional or not, so she's just happy that he was respectful.
As a Chinese, i have to say you feel more comfortable than I am in those traditional wet markets. 😅 You’ve visited so many cities I’ve never been to. Thanks for sharing in-depth food reviews and different aspects of culture. Eat safely!
Shoutout to the last lady!!! The majority of Chinese people are friendly if you kindly approach them. Of course, huge bonus point if you can speak some Chinese.
This is seriously authentic China! Great job. Regarding the comment about Japan, it's important to know why he said that. Most Chinese haven't forgiven Japan for the atrocities during the war. It's understandable, since Japan has never apologized for the horrors. Do a Google for "The Rape of Nanking" and you'll see why.
Used to be 8 RMB for $1 US. But the U.S. complained a lot how China kept its currency artificially low to benefit their trade so their goods are cheaper. Now $1 will buy less in China than it used to.
+DawlSheep Prods that's chninese hospitality if you a foreigner and speak chnese the poorer chinese can be very humble and generous and proud you able to speak chinese

Some of the foods look so good, and nothing like anything you would find in USA in the Midwest. It really makes me want to travel and explore. Thank you!
+cadvan09 When I saw that man, he reminds me of my gramps, and wanted to watch and waiting, like, how would he blow out some smokes from it, then he spits, Me was like "holy cow, that's not like my gramps, at all =_="

His Chinese is alright for a foreigner. Definitely proficient enough to uphold a basic conversation with the locals. Decent Mandarin (Chinese), but not great.
Your videos are addictive Trevor! I cant stop watching them! I've basically been going trough them non-stop for the last 2 days now! :-D *LOL* Keep 'em coming m8!
For some strange reason, the comments by a user named "Bobby" just disappeared. I was trying to reply him. Here's my reply: "Bobby, Chinese people do not have an issue with Japan. However, educate yourself by looking up on the history of ww2 in Asia. The invasion of China by Japan. Look up also Nanjing massacre. A side note for your information, today, there are Japanese folk who deny history. Fact: Japanese education system teaches revisionist history."
The woman at the end who gave you the pork bones for free is a wonderful example of how good human beings can be. There are people like her in every corner of the world, from every racial background and from war torn nations to rich nations. You either have it in you or you don't. I wish her all the best in life
You are the best Trevor as a Chinese person living in America what you are experiencing is something I long to experience when ever America gets too rough and getting to see it just makes me so happy ❤
For those Chinese who don't live in big city like Beijing, Shanghai, it's extremely rare and interesting to see foreigner (especially blonde hair, blue eyes). They'll just staring at you like try to memorize your face, see how you behave, looking for difference from what they saw on TV. I know it's awkward, but you can't stop them.. : p And once you start speaking Chinese, it's like BOOM! Cause very few foreigners can speak Chinese fluently, at least that's what they believe.
For those who don't understand why the man said "down with Japanese!", google "Unit 731" to see why a Chinese person may say that. I am not excusing it but it is understandable how resentment would continue if someone had personally or through family members experienced the absolute horrors of that and other historical conflicts between China and Japan and some of the worst war crimes in history that happened. *The More You Know Rainbow* and great videos, Food Ranger. Watching ALL of them!
this was a lot more real than your newer videos, definitely enjoyed you giving perspective on what it's not being born there and the way people approach you.
Great video. As usual, your so sweet, polite and respectful to everyone. That and your larger than life smile makes watching your videos very entertaining. Hope you keep this passion ongoing so as you can keep doing what you love and we all get to watch your videos. Thanks for another great mouth watering video.
I hit on this channel accidentally. At first I thought it's just some ignorant dude prancing around China. And then I heard him speak Chinese. This is wonderful, and it really takes me back. I was among the first American students to enter China since the revolution, back in 1974. And we all thought we were hot stuff, until we met up with some Canadian students that had been studying there for a year! To judge from the news it's easy to think that China has gone completely western, full of skyscrapers and cars. It's so nice to see there is some "real" China still. Some of the friendliest people on earth.
Trevor I stumbled upon your videos only days ago and I can't stop watching... your love for diversity is so refreshing! Keep it up and eat well my friend!
+The Food Ranger | Trevor James This is the first time I've seen one of your videos. I watched it all the way through and was really intrigued with the different people you ran in to. The guy selling the peppercorns was making an offhanded joke because you happened to be visiting the market on Nanjing Memorial Day. He immediately realized you didn't get the reference and I kinda felt bad for how he accidentally offended you. But then you ran into that wonderful butcher woman. After several panning shots of people standing around staring at you, and even a kid teasing you for being a foreigner, she notices the camera and immediately approaches and greets you. She even offered to GIVE you leftover cuts in a market where she's come to sell meat. It definitely shows that in any culture there are people who are warm, friendly, and genuinely caring for others that may or may not even speak the language.
Looking back on this early stuff, this woman was a shaman!!! "You can find a pretty Chinese woman!" Done and done... These videos from China never get old. They are truly one of a kind content on UA-cam! Can't wait for the next chapter!
It's what happens when you go deep haha especially in China. So many regional differences yet so many vibrancy in the market. I don't know if I will be able to try any of the meat there because people were touching it freely but that market sure really is interesting. I really want to try that fake Beijing duck.
"Down with Japan". So strange. I love how they kept complimenting your Chinese, and that kid had an "Oh shit!" moment when you spoke to him in Chinese after he was yelling out that you were a Foreigner.
+The Stry Show "Down with Japan" (or actually it's directly translated to "Down with the Japanese Ghosts") is a common saying in China because Japan invaded China during the 2nd world war. Despite how the younger generation now loves Japan for its pop culture, it's still a casual saying in China.
+The Stry Show Personally I'm a believer in learning from the past, but not holding grudges for what past generations have done. But I also understand the depth of feeling - my own mother-in-law was a child in Hainan when it was occupied during WWII. One third of the male population was killed during the occupation, which lasted from 1939 right through to 1945. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hainan_Island_Operation for more info on that.
+Tim Elley I know about the rape of Nanjing, and even without knowing the other stuff, I think Nanjing and their Unit 731 describes about as much as anyone needs to know to get a pretty good idea of what Japan did to China. I get the context, its just strange to hear it in a video that is very unrelated.
+The Stry Show This grudge is constantly refreshed with every generation and it will be hard to let it go. Politicians uses it to unify the people in a "we all have a common enemy and trust the government to fight against them!" sort of way. Movies have always used it as a theme and keep portraying foreigners as evil monsters - look at the recent Ip Man films for example. Its important to remember the crimes of history but to hold a grudge is unhealthy and toxic. Japanese government should also apologies like the Germans did to help the world heal.
+The Stry Show For many people who live in small places and never saw a foreigner before, Japan may be the first country to think of and then naturally comes this slogan.. they just watch too much Anti-Japanese War TV dramas.
Woow the way you go about presenting the types of food ingredients in your video and the confidence with which you communicate with the people makes one feel like he is in China or India with you.Your description of how they feel in your mouth makes my mouth water and seem to taste the food along with you. Great work Trevor, Keep it up.It makes me want to travel to India and China any time in the future.
I've been binge watching these videos and this one was intense in the first half. The negative energy was palpable. Then it changed towards the end. Do you get that vibe a lot when traveling?
I was thinking the same thing; I've been watching these Sichuan ones out of order. When I started this one; it felt uncomfortable to me. Glad I wasn't the only one who felt the tension here.
+Cherubino I assuming it's the awkwardness from maybe potentially feelings of obligation to do business. all these vendors and sellers have a heavy hustler mentality. sometimes it may be intimidating, so I'm sure he has to train himself yo deal with it the best he can.
Trevor you are truly a hardworking guy and have guts. Once I ventured inside a Chinese wet market ( I won't name the place),I felt so sad and nervous and rushed out soon.
They speak with a strong accent (speak dialect) and I guess that's the reason why you couldn't understand them sometimes. I'm chinese and I find this video pretty cool. Do you mind revealing what city it is by the way? Cause China is a big country haha
You are so adventurous! I wish I had been. I’m older now. Prob older than your parents. Your parents seem like nice people. Bet they are proud of you. Ting is lovely! Enjoy the videos!
Trevor has the manners and patience of an angel. Surprising how he keeps his cool when people are constantly staring and pointing out how he’s foreign.
Don't be put off by the Japanese comment. The Japanese where brutal to the Chinese he looks old enough that his parents may have suffered abuse from Japanese soldiers.

OMG! That was so funny when the old man put his head in front of camera and smiled! So nice! LoL
The best part of the video is the lady not taking money! Such a great gesture!
And giving the fallen piece of meat that dropped on the ground into the bag. LOL
since she dropped it i could't take my eyes off of that piece of meat, i knew it she was going to put it in the bag and she did it...

the amount candy he gave him definetely doesnt worth 10 tho
In China, they use money called RMB or Yuan. 6 RMB or Yuan equals to about a dollar in the U.S.
Used to be 8 RMB for $1 US. But the U.S. complained a lot how China kept its currency artificially low to benefit their trade so their goods are cheaper. Now $1 will buy less in China than it used to.

7:40 "Look at this guys cigar" then spits a huge lump, perfect timing :D
It is the seasoning for the soup that is delicious
Ah ha ha its ridiculous 😂😂😂

That was insane
😂😂😂 love this video
Woow the way you go about presenting the types of food ingredients in your video and the confidence with which you communicate with the people makes one feel like he is in China or India with you.Your description of how they feel in your mouth makes my mouth water and seem to taste the food along with you. Great work Trevor, Keep it up.It makes me want to travel to India and China any time in the future.

Blessings to her!!!
Lady commented ting ting....She is beautiful! !
Glad I wasn't the only one who felt the tension here.
what "negative energy" ?
+Cherubino I assuming it's the awkwardness from maybe potentially feelings of obligation to do business. all these vendors and sellers have a heavy hustler mentality. sometimes it may be intimidating, so I'm sure he has to train himself yo deal with it the best he can.
China is a much safer place that USA. What intense ? people just getting curious to foreigners.
glad someone else saw it too. haha.
Makes me curious if they treat other foreigners like this.. They're really nice and hospitable. And "all smiles" ;)
Trevor: did you ever go back to that lovely meat vendor?
Yes I looked for her many times but couldn't find her again sadly
Trevor you are truly a hardworking guy and have guts.
Once I ventured inside a Chinese wet market ( I won't name the place),I felt so sad and nervous and rushed out soon.
i think it's funny how the native people react to you when you speak their language.
They speak with a strong accent (speak dialect) and I guess that's the reason why you couldn't understand them sometimes. I'm chinese and I find this video pretty cool. Do you mind revealing what city it is by the way? Cause China is a big country haha
It's chengdu he says at the start.
7:42
Trevor: *Wow* Look at that guys cigar!"
Old man /w pipe: *Spits*

Love To Our Chinese Brothers From Bangladesh
Your videos rock man
Hey thanks a lot buddy!!
That free pork. Love these vids
But i think he was just joking
Google 731
.
I found it rather rude of him to tell Trevor he looked Japanese then insult the Japanese....especially when he obviously does not look Japanese!
Abuse ? they prob killed his entire fam to do a comment like that with such calm
is this guy working on canadian television ?
he seems so professional.
+Jackie Chan Hi Jackie! I'm working on my youtube channel, right here! Thanks for watching!
