    Absolutely great videos on the TH400. Great camera work also. With some, I get motion sickness and can't watch. I would like to request a series on the TH350. I have one that I need to rebuild. Good work!

      Apologies about the motion sickness. I agree...a bit too shaky on some scenes.
      We started out filming everything with one (1) camera. But, we discovered it's far too much to cover (close-ups and wide angles) with one camera....whipping the camera around, zooming in, and zooming out. So, now we're using a multi-cam setup.....for your viewing pleasure.
      Appreciate the constructive criticism. It's how we get better.

    Have watched all their episodes. Absolutely fantastic. Hope I can ask for advice here. Overhalls a th400 from a 68 corvette. Should change the rear lugs, plane gears. The new one is not exactly the same. When I insert the output shaft, the locking ring (snap ring) does not fit. The area where the snap ring should be is slightly different in height. In I a snap ring that is not equal in both surfaces. Can anyone help me here. Is aware of the mounting direction of the ring

    Hi guys, thanks for your videos. I’ve bought a bearing and bush kit to replace the rear thrust bearings on my TH400 as the tangs in the case were damaged and had also damaged the output shaft surface which I have also replaced. The tabs in the case wouldn’t retain the thrust bearing any longer. I’ve put the rear assembly back into the case and managed to insert the snap ring and retaining bolt but I have no end play and I’m wondering if this is going to cause me a problem? Appreciate if you could please let me know your thoughts. Regards, Phil

    Great video ,bad suggestion of parts. The rebuild kit doesn’t show or come with a list of what is in the kit. This is not for the first timer,you need extra seals and parts to make up what you overlooked .Just a heads up two seals I’m not sure what is going to cost me because I had already started.
    Thanks

    2 Questions. First Q- When installing the sun gear at the bottom of the sun shaft, does the lube hole need to align with the other hole in gear?
    Second Q- Should the rear shaft turn easily when set up or can it be tight to turn? i have the clearance but i cant turn it by hand, i need vise grips to aid turning. Thank You!

  • @skutahuniai4830
    @skutahuniai4830 Рік тому +1

    Robert, I have not been able to find an answer to a question I have in my mind. It is well stated in racing forums not to shift to neutral at the end of a run because the direct drum will overspeed and explode. With the car coasting, the rear carrier is driving the entire geartrain. However, the one way clutch on the front carrier is now free wheeling, the forward, direct and intermediate clutches would be released so there are no "locked" components which would make the sun gear spool up the direct drum. Everything would seem to me to be "free floating". What am I missing?

    • @SouthpawAutoworks
      @SouthpawAutoworks  Рік тому +1

      That's a great topic. Would love to do a video on that.
      IDK for sure... But, I imagine it's because the Direct Drum is splined to the Intermediate Shaft, which is splined to the sun gear, which meshes with (both planetary gear sets) the front planetary gear set, which is splined to the output shaft (via the front ring gear).
      Gonna have to mock that one up in the power flow stand, to see what's what...when time permits.

    • @skutahuniai4830
      @skutahuniai4830 Рік тому

      @@SouthpawAutoworks Thanks - I am very aware of what is splined to what.(I fully understand the conventional power flow.) Further to the comments on racing forums, they even have a valve body that has a "safe" neutral position. It cancels fluid pressure only to the forward drum, not the direct or intermediate clutches.

    • @SouthpawAutoworks
      @SouthpawAutoworks  Рік тому

      Right on! That’s very interesting. Gonna have to look into that.

    Love the series guys! I have a question; after installing the center support bolt, I cannot spin the output shaft. Is this normal, or did I miss something?

    • @SouthpawAutoworks
      @SouthpawAutoworks  Рік тому +1

      I'm not sure the bolt would affect the output shaft. However, it's possible to install the bolt, while not having the tapered center support snap ring installed. And this will enable the Center Support to get crooked in the case. This may affect the output shaft.
      I'd have to mock it up to know for sure. When time permits...
      The positive feedback is appreciated.

    • @BigChopperDave
      @BigChopperDave Рік тому

      @@SouthpawAutoworks thank you for the reply! I'll check the tapered center support ring. All your videos are awesome. Keep them coming!

    • @SouthpawAutoworks
      @SouthpawAutoworks  Рік тому

      On some models there are two snap rings for the Center Support. The tapered one, already mentioned. And there's a flat one, that lives underneath the center support. It provides a buffer between the center support and the aluminum transmission case.
      Thought I'd throw that out there, too.
      I appreciate you taking the time to respond to my message.

    I recently started on a rebuild with a thm 400 from a chevy, and found one with straight cut planetary gears, Is this an oddball trans?? Or just an early unit?

    • @SouthpawAutoworks
      @SouthpawAutoworks  Рік тому +2

      Right on.
      Straight-cut gears are found in HD TH400 applications (dump truck, box van/truck, etc).
      Like anything, there's pros and cons...
      Pros:
      The straight-cut gear has more surface area contact between two meshing teeth in gear set. (stronger design)
      No thrust loads (or, at least, greatly reduced) (forward/rearward planetary gear set movement, when under load).
      Cons:
      Gear set noise during operation (whine).
