For the sum of the squares of the roots of 5x^3-11x^2+7x+3, I get 51/25 by taking the derivative and function and performed division

For the last example probably that is not the best system. Because from abc=0 one of them is zero, say c=0, but then from the 2nd equation ab=0, say b=0, use the first equation: a=0.
And you can play this in general with n variables.
