  • Spearfishing NY.
In the summer the water gets very murky. Plankton everywhere that attracts schools of baitfish everywhere. So much bait that the fish do not bait the fishermen's lures and hooks.
Spearfishing is harder, as there is little time to identify and get the fish. Tautog, aka Blackfish, are plentiful, large size, but not legal to harvest in New York until October, unlike in NJ and CT.
It was a challenging day. No striped bass, no bluefish, no porgy schools.
I missed a porgy, saw a couple more.
I thought I would go home without a fish.
Only way to try was to hide behind rocks and crevices hoping the fish would come by.
There were too many boats, my dive flag pole broke, so I did not get too much far out.
I got 2 triggerfish, the only ones I saw. Not that many this year. Maybe the colder water in the summer of 2023 kept them away.
They are probably the best tasting fish, they smell great and fresh. I like to eat them raw, as ceviche or carpaccio, as they have a great flavor and consistency uncooked.
Their skin is really tough, but they are not hard to take spearfishing.
I put a very small and light stainless steel speartip on my Salvimar pneumatic speargun.
The shaft now goes all the way through on every fish.
The water was 19.5C 67F which is unusually cool for this time of year. A few days earlier it was 21C 70F, which seems below the average temperature.
Filming underwater in this murk is less interesting.
I took some aerial shots, I was curious to see the currents, and if large fish could be spotted from the sky.
A woman got a serious shark bite on her thigh the week before. Media, fire, police helicopters and drones are flying along the shoreline to spot sharks. I doubt that in this murk, all this sediment stirred in the water a sandbar shark or a sandtiger would be visible from the sky.
