3rd mate have the rights to call the captain whenever in doubt regardless of the rest hour. This is the captains standing orders in all the ship. This is the initial mistake of the 3rd mate.
Secondly, the 3rd mate should have raise the general emergency alarm as soon as possible. So that all the passengers & other crew members would have mustered in the assembly area & captain would also come up to the wheel house when he hears the emergency alarm.
At last, captain is responsible for the crew, passenger, cargo & ship. He should have safeguard the passengers & other crew members. But he failed to do so.

I can see the unbearable pain in the words of those parents, which I saw in some of the documentaries. They still believe that their children will come back to them one day... My heart couldn't take their loss till now, though it happened 9 years ago... They could have been saved 😭💔

There are so many issues we can find here. First of as a mother, I really felt those children's parent's pain and Ill fate. My tears where rolling down uncontrollably. And the judgment which is given to that monster captain is not at all justifiable considering his attitude and with no remorse for his wrong doing. He should be hanged or drowned in the same sea as a punishment. He needs to feel the same pain as those innocent children would have felt. And the schools should have arranged for security guidance before they arranged for such trips. Sadly, now children who followed a sick man's instructions caused their lives ..😭😭
