Within the space of two games St Albans City welcomed back one player from the injury list only to lose four more. But that was all City lost as David Noble’s threadbare squad followed up a first win in eight attempts at Chippenham Town’s Hardenhuish Park (21st October 2023) with a home win over a very much in-form Slough Town (24th October).
The two triumphs have catapulted City into sixth place in National League South and have seen local youngster George Morrall and recent signing Ibby Akanbi score their first league goals for the club.
Things could have turned out so differently down in Wiltshire had Michael Johnson not saved Matt McClure’s penalty when Chippenham were already a goal up. It was the second successive game in which MJ had saved a penalty and his sixth save from the last nine that he has faced - one other spot kick went wide.
But Michael’s joy was short lived as a second half injury turned out to be a third broken finger in two years. Up to two months on the sidelines beckons. MJ’s misery allowed second choice ‘keeper Sam Bentley to make his league debut three days later and a fine performance the 19-year-old gave as City saw off Slough 3-2 in an entertaining clash at Clarence Park. Five goals shared in favour of the Saints came at some cost though, with Ben Smith, Dylan Fage and Ben Wyatt taking the injury list to ten players.
A testing few days lay ahead for David Noble as he ponders his side for Saturday’s (28th October) visit by Aveley to Clarence Park. What should he do?
