Viper at SFGAM is the only roller coaster Six Flags built in house themselves and they did not do really a bad job at all unlike when Kings Island had to finish building Son of Beast after RCCA got fired midway during the construction.
Viper is truly Great America’s most underrated coaster.

I wasn’t trying to diss Kings Island at all as they indeed did a good job on building the Beast in house. Son of Beast on the other hand was doomed the minute the first set of lumber began to go vertical and the effort put into getting it built was poor from both RCCA and the park.

Your Cyclone Clone is really great. MM's Cyclone Clone Psyclone was a mess. For some reason MM always screws up Woodies. Pysclone used B&M trains for some reason that were terrible and the ride ended up so rough it was un-ridable. They also messed up Colossus. Fun fact: The bridge was supposed to have 2 Zs in its name (after the explorer) but it was misspelled for over half a century. After the coaster’s closure the bridge was renamed with the 2 Zs officially. The coaster did not get such justice.

The restraints felt like pulling down flat hard bricks on your shoulders and EVERYTHING, from the transitions to the wheels on the track, felt wrong, like there was an inch of clearance between the track and all the wheels.

My current home park is Magic Mountain and I will forever be a Viper-stan here. It's in my top three at the park and is one of the few coasters at the park regularly running more than one train. I haven't gotten to go back to SFGA to ride their Viper (yet) so I can't say which one I like better, but it'll be hard to oust SFMM's Viper as my number one snakey-themed coaster.

After over 30 years of anticipation I finally visited Magic Mountain this past March. I loved Viper. I have a lot of nostalgic love for Vortex from Kings Island. When I was growing up KI was the park I visited the most. I know Vortex was rough and hard to ride in the later years, but when I was a teen in 1987 it was the coolest thing ever. While not exactly like Vortex, Viper is from the same era and one of the most pleasant and fun of the remaining Arrows I've ridden. I thought it was a great ride. Maybe you'll have to take my opinion with a grain of salt because I actually really enjoyed Scream and thought Goliath's back row was honestly the most intense ride I've had in the past decade. I'm glad you mentioned the Looping Star, I never knew the difference between it and the Silver Arrow because they look the same. Apparently the Silver Arrow is a smaller version of the Looping Star which now makes sense. I originally thought it would be cool if Vekoma fixed Viper but then I though it would be cool for Chance to redo Viper ala Phantom's. But now that I think about it what if they did a blend between that and a Hyper GTX where Viper ended up an insane Airtime Machine! That would be really cool!

    • @Colaholiker

Yes, the Silver Arrow is a smaller version, less height (-21ft), less track length (-124 ft), about 10 ft. smaller in both directions when it comes to footprint, and a slightly shorter train (6 cars vs. 7 on the Looping Star). With the Silver Arrow being released just a year after the Looping Star, they of course share a lot of similarities.
The easiest way to tell them apart is that on the Looping Star, the loop is parallel to the long side of the footprint, while on a Silver Arrow, it crosses the layout diagonally.

When I 1st heard about Viper at SFMM It was from CCF and he hated it. When I rode it less than 3 months shy of being 50 in late November 2019 I liked it and was told it had recently been re-tracked.
From June 5th though 9th I'll see how Viper compares to the Cyclone at SFGA which I plan on riding June 4th. They say nothing beats the OG Cyclone but the one at SFGA has 3 bench trains and cars, totalling 15 rows, whereas the OG cyclone has 4 bench trains and a total of 12 rows, so this June at the age of 52 I'll have to be the judge of that. I'm guessing it's better than American Eagle which held the drop record for SEVEN YEARS (the length of time that the coaster wars stalled) from May 23rd 1981 until either Shockwave opened at the same park or Bandit opened in Japan; both in 1988. Thanks for this great "viper" coaster comparison video; it was entertaining.

Of the two in this list I’ve ridden. SFDL & SFMM. I still have to put that viper first, but I have at least 99 more rides on Darien’s to my one at magic mountain. I appreciate the praise you gave the park for how it’s maintained it all these years and how it’s one of the better arrow loopers still left.
Also Chris love the videos….. will we see a Wild or Crazy Mouse video in this format in the future?

I actually helped with concept art believe it or NOT as I worked in the Sign Shop (maintenance) for Six Flags from summer 1988-1989. The reason the tunnel didn't go all the way down to the bottom was was because of the lower track (to expensive) It still added the right touch though. Don't B hatin' on the Greezed Lightnin' name though! "We" had it 1st. There was some runners UP for the names of those shuttles though. Also concept art showed GL was to called Sling Shot & face the opposite way in the park. There was a giant sling shot as the marque. La Vibora mimics the colors of the poisonous snake found down here in Texas. Yep! Intiman' & B&M's have that SOUND! Intamin's shook all of yer chain out of your pockets.

Well if you count the “bobsled viper” then I guess it’s two! I rode the bobsled when it was Sarajevo Bobsled back in the 80s and of course the Viper by Arrow dynamics currently at Magic Mountain.
When it opened in 1990 it was a big deal. I didn’t get to ride it for the first time until 2004! It was scarier than I thought but I really liked it and still do. I don’t know why people don’t like it but I do.

Oooo I've done Sea Viper at Seaworld Australia. One of the current 5 operating ones is Corkscrew at Rainbows End in New Zealand. That's my homepark. Imagine having that as your best coaster in the country? 1 of 4 total (maybe 5? if I can catch that traveling fair kiddy cred). Luckily I've done your number 1 and 2 Vipers in USA though.

I was on the first operating train for the season when it opened on Mother’s Day, and it was awesome! Would love to coordinate something if you wanted a firsthand account!

Six flags great america is my hometown park. And viper was my first roller coaster with a big drop. I have to say it's a very unrated ride. It never slows down and has awesome air time. I love this ride to death and is one of my favorites. Having it at the top of this list was a very good choice.

I love Viper at SFMM, I got to ride it in 2017, and it brought back so many memories of riding Great American Scream Machine. I was also one of the few who loved GASM, and never got the hate it received. I'd take that over Green Lantern any day of the week.

Sea Viper up at Palace Playland/Old Orchard Beach is totally decent. It was a good buy for the park. Definitely an upgrade from the previous model, which was an old Galaxi. SV is a good family coaster. It rides pretty much exactly as you would expect it to by looking at it, perhaps a bit better than that.

Have you ever, or is there a possibility of, a "Top/Most Ridden (rode?) rides at SFMM" video? Maybe a series every Q1 for the Top 5 parks or so as I'm always curious which attraction gives the most rides per year, if that data is avail, of course? Thanks and keep up the great work. Rode Viper at SFMM in 98 and was a great ride then, so Viper ❤ here!!
