I love how he's adding numbers saying if I loose one then that means I saved a 100. U can see he's very upset with 94 but Miller's thinking maybe I've saved a thousand and then he says what he's been wanting to say Ryan better be worth it to cure a disease or something. He has no idea who Ryan is but he knows the 94 and wouldn't trade with Ryan

@@Wildcat82164that's the heartbreak of war. This dynamic exists everywhere at every location. You care so much about the people right beside you, and if you survive you have to live with knowing that it was partially luck that you're around and they aren't. That's what so fucking cruel and sick about these generals and politicians. They don't give a fuck about any of us. Oh they'll have a good story and reason for every war, but most of it is bullshit. We are so much better when we refuse to kill each other.

I dont see him asking to be told that at all. He's having a moment...having a laugh. He doesn't want anyone to see it because it's not really appropriate. He is immediately brought back to reality. He does this many times in the film.
My main takeaway from this...and I dont know how you can't see this.
Is when he's talking about Ryan he's talking about the audience. This better be worth it. Because I'm not 100 % sure it is. So you better make sure it's worth it. Because I had to watch actual men die for people that aren't even born yet and as easy as that choice is...its still really hard and really difficult.

Criminal that this movie did not win best picture the year it was released. This is a key scene that really shows you the psychology of Captain Miller and his shaking hand. Miller had been a teacher in civilian life, he is used to guiding young minds and helping them prepare for life.
Now he is leading them in death because of the war. And it's taking its toll as we see in the form of his shaking hand. He rationalizes the loses under his command and tells himself he is saving more lives for every one of his men who dies, but it's getting harder for him to believe that.
So we see him almost at a breaking point and what happens? now he is asked to lead a mission to save one man's life- Ryan's... no matter what the cost to his own men. That is the exact opposite of what he has told himself to rationalize the deaths under his command. And so his hand begins to shake more. Because the prop that holds him up and keeps him going has been kicked out from under him...
This church scene really puts all of that in to context.
    *spoiler alert*
The end where he dies, his mission accomplished, the camera lingers on his hand...still at last and in peace as he has rejoined the ranks of many of the men who have died under his command...

Spielberg cast Sizemore on only one condition - at random times during filming, he'd have Sizemore drug tested to make sure he was staying clean, and if he failed any of them, Spielberg would fire him and recast the part, even if they were almost done with filming. To Sizemore's credit, he obviously passed every test.

To me it is this part between the first and last 20 minutes of chaos that makes the film stand above the rest of the so called “realistic/shock” war films.
Some people have unfairly criticised Spielberg for raising the adrenaline to red by giving us one of the most shocking and realistic depictions of war on screen right off the bat only to then slow down the film into a war drama (dialogue, thoughts, arguments, then more thoughts, arguments as we walk into the French countryside) only to kick off back again for the final 20 mins of battle.
Not everything needs to be about tension on the battlefield, some of the hardest “battles” were addressed when the barrels were smokeless. It was quite common for soldiers to spend hours and days of boredom (playing cards, writing letters, human hygiene chores, rifle and equipment checks etc) and general waiting unnervingly before the came face to face again with the horror; it’s not all run and gun (that is mostly Hollywood).
The Thin Red Line, Apocalypse Now, Platoon, BOB and Das Boot (the mini series) did the same thing very well I might add. Character development, anxiety, fear, emotional unraveling, character conflicts, questioning basic ideas of why, how and ifs. It’s what makes those characters humans and in turn the film more true to life.

  • @MikeLogan777

To me, this is the key scene of the entire movie - though many other scenes would rank a very close 2nd. It puts the entire mission in perspective - both for the characters and for the audience.
The meeting with the general right after the D-Day scene also ranks high in helping us understand the importance of what Miller and his men are doing (and why).

The best thing about the writing here is how he switched the names. In reality he’s using ten Caparzos to find one Ryan, but by saying he wouldn’t trade ten Ryans for one Caparzo, it reinforces his earlier point about saving as many men as possible, no matter who they are. It really hits later when he admits he’s a schoolteacher-and these guys are all really just boys to him, shouldering a burden none of them should have to.

Even when he could quiet his conscious mind his subconscious was in constant turmoil. Fear and pain dig so deep in our mind that it can pollute our background functions. Counseling and subconscious reprogramming are a must for soldiers of the front lines.

This is serious fuckin’ dialogue. I say that as someone that has never SERVED. I suppose it has to be this way-it has to go unspoken. Unspoken. Unacknowledged. Ignored. Glossed over. The whole system collapses without men taking orders. And men giving orders. “You see, when…when you END UP KILLING ONE OF YOUR MEN YOU TELL YOURSELF IT HAPPENED SO THAT 1…OR 2…OR 10…1,000….MEN COULD LIVE…AND THATS HOW SIMPLE IT IS….” Very very powerful dialogue. “I wouldn’t trade 10 Ryan’s…” Reality and warfare don’t jive. Men aren’t pawns. Lives are lost and nothing is gained. Tomorrow, we do it again. Jesus.

It was Parkinson’s disease, early stage. Remember he said he was a school teacher before goin to the war. Which the war itself causes effect to his body. He said & announced that he lost over 90 men under his command… Which is tough, cause he has to wake up & say he was responsible for those men 💯. You can tell by his emotions

The timeline of the movie gets a little confusing to me.
They left Normandy in the morning, this is that night.
And we don’t see another night scene.
Is the rest of the movie all in the same day?
