Lyrics:
One, two, three
Alice shot a possum out of her persimmon tree
And she left it in the orchard for all its possum friends to see
Crack shot with a .22 when she was ninety-three
She was only five feet tall but she was twice as wise as me
Oh, Alice, I wish I knew you better
You're as pretty as a flower
Tough as saddle leather
I learned more from you that day than all life's teachers put together
Oh, Alice
Dear friend of mine
Oh, Alice had a pickup truck and one day we were talking
Said that she was all done driving, she was better off a-walkin'
Said "I sent my driver's license to the local DMV
But the dang fools must be crazy 'cause they sent it back to me"
Oh, Alice, I wish I knew you better
You're as pretty as a flower
Tough as saddle leather
I learned more from you that day than all life's teachers put together
Oh, Alice
Dear friend of mine
Alice never had a husband, brother never took a wife
Yeah, they farmed that Brazos River bottomland near all their life
Brother went to Heaven, Alice covered up his face
Standing by his bedside while she sang "Amazing Grace"
Oh, Alice, I wish I knew you better
You're as pretty as a flower
Tough as saddle leather
I learned more from you that day than all life's teachers put together
Oh, Alice
Dear friend of mine
Oh, Alice
Dear friend of mine
Writing and performing from the heart about real life. Gee real music hasn’t died after all thanks and God bless Jamie
Beautiful story and song. Thank you!
Love all your music but"Alice" is by far my favorite 💖😍💖
This reminds me of my Nanny who lived most of her life between Sublime and Vienna Texas.
🎵 'I don't practice Santaria, but I eat wee hot dawgs...' 🎵
I love this. I had an MP3 of this song that I played for years without knowing who sang it. I don’t remember where it came from, probably one of many tunes on a CD someone gave me. Every time it played, I would think,” Someday, I’m going to figure out who this is.” I finally did it. Now I know. Thank you Jamie for finally showing up.
lovely story....amazing song...thank you for sharing
Thanks for listening
I heard of them. Grew up in that area though.
I've said it before and I'll say it again...This is on par with Robert Earl Keen's Mariano and Guy Clark's Last Gunfighter Ballad. I swear I can smell the dusty truck mixed with her Oil of Olay, while having the conversation.
Preach!
