I'm not sure any other song, written as simply and matter of fact as this once, captures a mans total despair in love than this one. Tom T. Hall is such a master poet.
Dont know how many times Ive listened to him sing this song the past couple days. He makes it believable like he is really looking for a certain woman. Fantastic.
Great rendition of this song! Buddy made the song a classic. When you sing a song about every night and perform like this (singing like he means it), you're a big one.
Buddy is a great guitarist, writer and interpreter of song. And Julie’s husband. Saw Buddy open for, then play with, Miss Emmylou Harris my life changed that day...
I got him the audition he's talking about in Austin back in 1970's. It's true. His future wife, Julie, didn't want to hire him but I talked bandleader into it. He and Julie ran off together later on. They both left other people.
Stuck in the past blackdog? Of course you make a song your own, especially when you are Buddy Miller! That's talent. Thanks Buddy. Come back to Australia some time, and perhaps I'll even get to see you at the Orange Peel in Asheville again some time.
This is my favorite song and also a special song for personal reasons. It came out right after Martin Luther King Jr was killed and I believe that it is a response to that event. “Her” is the USA (in some ways at least; see the lyrics about the trail of her tears for instance) and the narrator is a Jesus-like figure, if not him or God themselves. Memphis is also a biblical reference, though obviously the other Memphis in Africa, but I’m not a biblical scholar by any means (that said, three days and nights also speaks to biblical reference).
@blackdogxx Holy cow - what next? Your treatise on the sacrilege of Jimi’s rendition of ‘All Along The Watchtower’??? You know - Seeing as how ‘making it your own’ is apparently a hanging offense in the realm that you survey. Couldn’t find a much more egregious violation than that one, I figure. LOL - what unhinged nonsense.
Bravo Mr Buddy Miller, your version of this song hits the mark of excellence. Thank you.
Love Tom T Hall, but this is my favorite rendition of this song bar none. Thank you Buddy!
Right amount of soul in his singing,,, right amount of country
You can tell he's worked on every inflection, every guitar lick that goes so well with this song. Enjoyed it immensely.
I knew this songs heart was out there somewhere. This is the heart and soul of one mans love. Play On
One man, one guitar and no place for talent to hide, well done and thanks.
Buddy Miller songs
I was lucky enough to be at the Loveless Barn the night of this performance. He is amazing!
one of the most beautiful songs, ever!!
Buddy Miller....one of the few I can call; "The REAL deal"...outstanding.
Buddy's signature piece. I never tire of hearing him sing this song.
Buddy puts more heart and soul into this already amazing song. Never tire of hearing him sing this song!
Damn. He's so talented. What a country sounds. Love this very much.
... every note IS loaded . Goodonya Buddy . I've caught a number of your sets over the years ... Australia Salutes you x

Buddy does this Tom T Hall song better than anyone. RIP Tom T
Buddy, you're my hero!
you sing to my heart...
What a great song and a great performance!
The mark of a great song - no matter who does it, they "own" it.
This has always been a beautiful song, no matter who's doin it. Great song.🎸😎🇺🇸
Buddy is a great guitarist, writer and interpreter of song. And Julie’s husband. Saw Buddy open for, then play with, Miss Emmylou Harris my life changed that day...
@David Allan Emmylou was the one who turned me on to Buddy Miller, and I've loved him ever since.
@@RemingtonRidersMusic me to. They dueted live on A Showmen’s Life. I was sold
I can listen to this all day long
Straight up a great delivery of a great song. None better.
Belle version ✌️❤et très belle Gibson J45 🎵

Aww, this touches my heart
What a talent!!
My momma died in Memphis. Thank You.
jesus H Christ Buddy, a new country hero for me
Buddy sure knows how to romance a guitar!
I love him indeed. But I´d rather hear Tom T Hall´s performance for three days and nights. That´s made a hole in my head...
I think that is the most powerful line of the song. It's a shame it was left out of this rendition.
Many thanks Buddy!
i love this gitter, buddy
Love this
You do a great Job…..Excellent
To sing it with so much soul, love his version
My favorite version of this song,
Great, man..! From France.
Chills.
Buddy owns this song . . . he's the man . . .
mans got skills!!!
great!!!!!!!
Here we are half way through 2019, & everyone before me has said it,,,,,,,,,,,,,, "Buddy Miller" Great Player, Singer
Simply great, stirring stuff. The word " legend " is chucked around too much, but Buddy is the real deal.
Stephen Channing you get it, sir
"...she actually told them not to hire me but they did..."LMAO😂
Fabulous ! Dont forget to hear too the french version 'sur la Route de Memphis' by Eddy Mitchell
ok, i cried

Why include that detail, friend? Did you mean to come off as a big downer? Cause you did.
I ate dinner with both Julie and Bud once and got a Steve Miller tee-shirt. That was back in the mid 90s :)
Buddy worked his magic on her. They are still together so good for them. Sometimes it's just meant to be

Amazing
Buddy Miller does Right by Tom T Hall on this one as well
"That's How I Got to Memphis" was playing in the corridor; it was a Tom T. Hallway.
What do you call a greeting card that sings "Ballad of Forty Bucks?" A Tom T. Hallmark.
Jeff Daniels does it in the tv show the News Room at a wake
Yes..!
I met him at Guitar Center in St. Louis a couple months ago. He was super down to earth.
This is my favorite song and also a special song for personal reasons.

Mister Eddy Mitchell made a very good french version of this song :-)
A vrai dire; non ...

I'd love to know how he's playing with his thumb for the first 60 seconds of the song, then he suddenly has a pick one his hand. Was he palming it?
🇺🇦✌🏽🙏
Buddy inhabits this song like John Lennon inhabits "Twist and Shout".
YES
No one should even try to cover Tom T. Hall's version, it's waste of their time!
He ruined a good song with a crummy guitar sound and odd phrasing and changing the melody. Don't 'make it your own' ...
your a dumb ass
@blackdogxx
