  • 👉To solve a system of equations means to obtain a common x-value and a common y-value that makes the each of the equation in the system true. To solve a system of equations by graphing means to obtain the point of intersection (if any) of the graphs of each of the equation that make up the system. To graph a linear equation, we set the equation in the slope-intercept form and then graph the intercept and obtain the line using the slope.
    The point of intersection of the graphs of the equations that make up the system is the solution to the system of equations.

    As someone whos taking accelerated math, this is the first unit that has had me lost and confused. Brian, I have a great math teacher, but these videos are so informative and laid back that I feel like I learn in 5 minutes what would take me 2 classes to learn normally. Thank you, you have saved me from systems of equations

    I love your explanation, however, it would be better if you had a grid on your whiteboard, because with what you drew it looks like the solution is the point (-1, -3) but the true solution if you had a better grid is really (-2, -5). INCORRECT. The intersection is (-2,-5)...never use the graphing method to calculate an intercept point, put them in y=mx+b (y#1=3/2x-2 and y#2=2x-1) then solve for x using (3/2x-2=2x-1) which gives x=-2, plug that into both y='s (3/2(-2)-2 and 2(-2)-1) and both y's will =-5...which is where they cross if you plot it on graph paper.

    • @brianmclogan
      @brianmclogan  6 років тому +323

      there is nothing wrong with using graphing to calculate the intercept point, there is everything wrong with not making sure you have accurate graph on graph paper, I should have recognized my error and checked algebraically so thank you for noticing and posting. Will pin your comment so others can see.

    god bless this man he has saved me countless times, my teacher has a very strange way of teaching where she actually doesn't explain how to do the work at all, and you always seem to be able to help.

    At 1:15 I don't understand how 4-3 equals 3 x and at 1:15 why did you decide to subtract Y instead and and what would happen if you decided to do it the other way and why would you need to divide?

      Caveman Spongebob when you subtract 3 from both sides, you don’t necessarily solve the problem. You write it as the number that your subtracting from and adding/subtracting to the top number. For example, if your line is 4x + y = 15, you would subtract 4x from both sides and right y = 4x + 15. Confusing, I know.

    Thank you so much. This is just like what I learned in class but so much more simplified when you explain it. A lot of people might not say it, but this video is a real lifesaver for them. This is definitely getting a thumbs up from me and I will recommend this to anybody who needs help on this particular subject.
