  • Luna van Leeuwen (15) is playing the Loure from Violin Partita no. 3 with a Baroque bow built by Basil de Visser in Amsterdam, in 2008. She is surprised that the bow gives a very beautiful sound all on its own, for which you need to do very little. However, you can bow very hard and fast with it and put weight into your bowing. Shunske Sato’s masterclasses have shown her that the Loure is not so much a slow and sad movement, but that it emanates great pride.
    In connection with the recordings of Bach’s Violin Sonatas and Partitas, the Netherlands Bach Society has organised a talent development project for the violinists and Baroque violinists of the future. Seven talented Dutch youngsters, aged thirteen to eighteen, were selected at auditions to take part in two masterclasses by Shunske Sato on Bach’s works for violin solo and the Baroque violin, which were held in the spring of 2019. Each young musician chose their own movement to rehearse and record for All of Bach.
    This project was created in collaboration with the Netherlands Violin Competition. It received support from the Dutch Musical Instruments Foundation, which provided the violinists with Baroque violins and bows, so that they could explore the new possibilities of these instruments and the Baroque style, under the guidance of Shunske Sato.
    Recorded for the project All of Bach on 24th June 2019 in the Lichtfabriek (Light Factory), a former power station in Haarlem. If you want to help us complete All of Bach, please subscribe to our channel bit.ly/2vhCeFB and consider donating bit.ly/2uZuMj5.

    Such artistic maturity in her performance at such a young age, I wonder how will she play this piece 30 years from now.

      @@ArtedelaCiencia asi es, pero no es facil e, violin..yo toco el violonchelo ocasionalmente y es mas facil, debido al largo del mastil...en un violin...1/2 milimetro de error ya suena mal..por mas vibrato que le des...

    What surprises me is this is the BWV right before the first cello suite; so if you played every single Bach piece on cello this would be a refresher before the First suite’s prelude. To attempt such a feat though would be nearly impossible.

    I'm well aware that the issue of vibrato in Baroque performance practice is somewhat controversial. I'm not a violinist and don't really have any strong opinions on the question, but it does seem odd to me that some of Mr. Sato's young students play their pieces almost entirely without vibrato, while some others use it quite liberally. Mr. Sato himself does not, at least in those UA-cam videos I can find of him playing Bach. I wonder, for some violinists, even relatively young ones, has the habit of using vibrato become so ingrained that they have difficulty not using it?

      It depends a lot on the teacher, vibrato has made such a debate, not only now but in the baroque era as well, in any case, at that time it was considered an ornament, and as such, it's a common practice of historical performers nowadays (like Mr. Sato) to limit its use to the moments where it feels appropiate, some treatises advise to use it everytime as possible (whatever that means), some others not. But in the second half of last century it became standard to vibrate everything as the new fashion was to make everything sound as even as possible, some remains of that school are still alive today, and continuous vibrato is a must learn technique for every violin student, then it comes the artistic decision of where to use it. There is a quite popular phrase nowadays about that topic: "To use vibrato in every note is like putting up ketchup in every meal you eat" :)

    Is it the style of the Loure to play the pick-up eighth notes as sixteenths?

    • @rishibhalla6487
      @rishibhalla6487 3 роки тому +1

      I think it’s because of the time signature of the Loure which is 6/4 which is more dance like therefore the eighth notes are quicker

    The Loure is movement number 2. My list of the best UA-cam performance of every BWV number, has for BWV 1006 Itzhak Perlman playing the whole partita in London in 1978. His Loure begins at 4:50. This sound is far more exciting. Perlman's Loure just feels like a break, after all those 16ths of the prelude. I feel as if I have never heard this movement, until now.

    Beautiful playing and interpretation, but I feel the acoustics (excessive reverberation of the hall) are detracting from it.
