    To drink through a straw without choking to death most people open their jaws while holding the straw in their lips. The size of the buccal cavity increases as the posterior section of the tongue drops from the palette with the mandible. The increased spacial volume is an area of low pressure which your soda happily fills as it is pushed up the straw by external air pressure. Just an observation. Don't use your lungs to drink soda. Bad idea.

    You said about aircraft, that localized things could happen NEAR the opening, but you forgot about one big thing: the Bernoulli principle. Specifically the application where a high speed flow of fluid (air in this case) across a small opening will draw air out said opening. I hope I said that correctly, but I probably didn't.

  • @jformaldehydem
    @jformaldehydem 8 років тому

    Your eyeballs wouldn't freeze, not straight away anyway. They'd boil because of the low pressure. All of the water in your body would boil, and then once the pressure got below the triple point of water would start subliming, until your body cooled down to the temperature of about -67ºC, then any remaining water would become ice crystals. You'd be well dead by that stage, and possibly solidified goo as a result of every cell in your body exploding as a result of the water boiling.
    A caveat I should add because it's the internet and I know I'll end up getting corrected, the boiling and explody cells wouldn't happen instantly. Your death would probably be relatively painless (except for the panic of realising you're screwed), but eventually your body would turn to mush as the pressure contained inside your body slowly drops to zero.

  • @Luke_Benson
    @Luke_Benson 8 років тому

    Although it doesn't apply to space, there is such a thing as negative pressure. it only exists in liquids in very special situations but it's similar to tension on a rope. bonus fact: it's what trees use to grow taller than 10 meters.

    You only covered one instance (the alien one), what about in the instance that is featured in the Star Trek TNG Episode "Disaster", where Geordi and Crusher are in a Cargo bay, and they intentionally explosively decompress the entire cargo bay. Surely the force of the entire room (I'm guessing its 20ft by 40ft by 30ft?) volume of air being sucked out through the cargo bay exterior door would be enough to suck everything in the room out along with it.

    Its the same in diving, if you go up fast, you get trained to breath out and keep breathing out, otherwise your lungs go bad.
    Its part of the standard training (at least for me), at 10m below surface, you take the mouth peace and go up in one exhaling all the time... and you exhale a lot.

    +Kyle Hill You got that right. But not only that, if you'd suddenly go into a (close to) absolute vacuum, the blood (and every other liquid) would expand your body, but more on the inside because arteres have more pressure then veins, so in the first stage your organs would get crushed. Then in the second stage, 'cuz of the modified/incresed volume of the blood, it's pressure will drop, and so it's boiling point would rapidly drop, but because it's a vacuum there is no matter to pick up your body heat, what results is all your blood (and every other liquid) will start to boil while still in you (remember what % of you is liquid).
    ...And all that in what i could only guess would be less then 10 seconds. The good part is that because of the rapid expansion of the blood your brain would be crushed (within the skull) causing a full blackout within what i can only hope is the first second....

    • @kylehill
      @kylehill 8 років тому

      +dexter floy (Niamon Drox) While true in theory, the blood boiling thing doesn't really happen in practice. We know this from the experiments I talked about with chimps and dogs. They've been revived after 90s without boiling blood and minimal brain damage, for example.

    Please do a video on the following..
    A set of straws, one perforated and one solid, so long that it could reach outside the atmosphere, which one would suck more air out of the atmosphere?

    Try and explain how instant transmission would work if it could.

    Just wondering if the power ranger zords could be real! As in giant individual machines which can combine to one giant robot.
    Thanks :)

    There was a horrible accident where 4 divers were killed when the seal to a pressure chamber was opened too soon. Two of the divers were standing mere feet from the door and were literally blown through the crack just like the Alien 4 creature. They turned to mush. The other two divers died immediately from bends. The employee on the outside who opened the chamber seal was also killed.

    Basically, it depends on how strong a body can withstand the pressure difference between the environments before those horrific "alien sucked into space" scene can happen.

    now if you were to block that hole with your hand.. would it save the day with minor damage to your hand? assuming they patch it from outside

    question. If we have an extremely long rectangle room, where only the small square of it was ripped open instantly.
    Let's say a 2m by 2m end point, and a 100meter long room, at 15 psi.
    Would a person standing on the end, get enough push to fall out, or how far from the edge would you have to stand to not feel enough pushing? (considering 1g centrifugal force towards the floor)

    Also I have two questions. First, if a hole about the size of a plane's emergency doors was made in a plane while flying, would it tear itself apart like it does in the movies? Second, is it possible to expand your lungs without breathing in?

  • @eeyore6532
    @eeyore6532 8 років тому +4

    I don't expand my lungs to use a straw, I would drown.
    I use the muscles in my mouth to draw the liquid up through the straw, meanwhile I'm able to breath through my nose when I need to.

      Depends on what the straw is used on. My lungs work great for weed :)

    your eyes wouldn't freeze because of the lack of pressure, there is less energy needed to turn solid to liquid to gas or vice versa

    What happens with the frozen skin from direct contact with outer space? That would be really brittle, and internal pressure would be enough to destroy your skin, leaving your veins exposed to space's vacuum, therefore "draining" you (actually your blood would freeze too).

  • @boriskalashnikov489

    wait, with the Mythbusters one, there was air around the plane, so there would be more pressure leaving the craft up in thermosphere to exosphere levels than in the troposphere
