  • What happens when you upgrade the brain of the tesla from the MCU1 to the MCU2 with the new FSD computer. (Full Self Driving? Not yet.)
    The MCU or the media control unit controls the music, maps and entertainment options of the Tesla. The FSD or full self-driving computer helps the car see and use the custom AI chip that Tesla developed to provide autonomous navigation, vision and more.
    The upgrade of the brains of a Tesla are straight forward, from placing the order to getting the car. The upgraded MCU enhances the overall software experience from the maps, games, web and entertainment options to the self-driving visualizations and general user experience.
    The software process and upgrade is straightforward however the core settings for the driver are not migrated so make sure you take your garage door opener and expect to re-pair your phone and any other settings, Bluetooth connections, and preferences.
    Overall the MCU upgrade is straightforward and gives a 2015-2018 Tesla a fresh user experience.

    A couple follow-up notes. If you upgrade the MCU, please delete all of your settings and logout of Spotify, TuneIn. Unpair your phone and wipe the contacts from the car. The reason for this is that the MCU may get re-sold by Tesla and you don't want your data on the device after the upgrade. Not a huge deal but I did end up having to reset my Spotify password.
    A couple folks asked and, YES the screen gets replaced. Both the smaller dash screen and the main screen. After a few months, I'm still very happy with the upgrade. Highly recommend and the FSD updates just keep on coming.

    I do hope that you get this question. My MCU is dying.. so I need to either get the MCU upgrade or replace with same. I am leaning towards MCU2, because I would like the faster graphics as well as better music and ability quickly find music or stations. here is my question. Tesla is telling me that the Screen is not a part of the MCU, so if the screen also needs replacement, mine most likely does not.. it is $3599.. or that is the quote I recieved. did you get a new screen with your update or would you even notice?

    • @HalfIdeas
      @HalfIdeas  3 роки тому +1

      I did get a new screen as part of the MCU update (March 2020). The technician told me that they had to upgrade both screens, the speedometer screen and the main screen as part of the upgrade. The explanation was that the older screens have computer components that are replaced by the newer MCU. Based on my experience I would think that you only need to upgrade the MCU... maybe you'll also get a new screen included like I did for free? No guarantee there but that was my experience and what my technician told me.

    Did you have ECU with 2.0 hardware or 2.5? 2.0 for cars purchased Oct 2016 to Aug 2017 and 3.0 were cars purchased Aug 2017 to April 2019. I ask because if you had 2.0 you had black and white cameras and i was wondering how sentry mode would work?

    Thanks for this review; My appointment is this Monday. I will head down to my garage and clear out, and/or reset to factory settings this evening. My only question is, Does your Tesla CPU pair with your current garage system?

    • @HalfIdeas
      @HalfIdeas  4 роки тому

      Yes. My old MCU and the new MCU have had no issues pairing with my garage door. The Model S is compatible with HomeLink garage doors and I've been able to pair it with two different garage doors at home and one at work. On a Model3 I believe the HomeLink garage door is an extra charge add-on.

    Do they replace the screen as well? I thought they didn't but it looked like your yellow border went away. And how seamless is the tunein FM channels? What kind of lag do you get before it starts to play?

    • @HalfIdeas
      @HalfIdeas  4 роки тому

      Yes. they replace both the main screen and also the smaller dash screen according to the tech. TuneIn FM is good but not perfect lag seems to depend but usually just a few seconds. I have found that I either listen to spotify/podcasts so I only use FM for a few things. Haven't missed it so far.

    • @HalfIdeas
      @HalfIdeas  6 місяців тому

      I didn't feel that the audio experience was better/worse. The big difference is that AM/FM radio went away. They now have an add-on that brings AM/FM back with the MCU upgrade so really the audio doesn't feel much different.

    When you upgraded your MCU2, did it come with the FSD chip, or did you purchase the FSD upgrade separately?

    • @HalfIdeas
      @HalfIdeas  6 місяців тому

      FSD was purchased separately. The 2017 Tesla had what was called "Enhanced Autopilot" and this was upgradable to FSD before the MCU upgrade was available.

      Great comment. Tesla has issued a recall for old 8Mb MCU Chips. This isn't the same as upgrading the MCU and I wouldn't be eligible but if you upgraded because your MCU died then you may be. Detail from Tesla: www.tesla.com/support/8gb-emmc-recall-frequently-asked-questions
