If you cant grasp that and still argue just to argue or defend your weak stance to the death on it. Well go do what you do. Were not convincing each other. Guys like him really frustrate me. Weight loss is already such a minefield to navigate for the average person and blatantly muddying the waters and overcomplicating it is not helping anyone! Weight lifting and calorie counting have completely transformed my physique in a year and a half. I went from soft and pudgy to low-key bodybuilder. It was hard, but it wasn't complicated. I just had to keep an eye on what I ate (calorie counting really helped me here) and lift with intensity really regularly. It was a truly frightening video. When it had someone such as myself, who lost 50lb in a year through a 500 calorie daily deficit, questioning if what I thought was true, I can only imagine the effect it would have on someone who has tried and failed to lose weight many times.
Love the budget analogy. It is bang on. I counted calories for a few years to get a handle on how to deal with food and maintain/lose (props to Carbon Diet Coach) and now I still do here and there when changing goals but don't really need to in order to maintain since I have a good handle on it. Was damn shocking when I started though to see where my calorie budget went.
Did you watch the whole podcast? I thought one of his main arguments about calories not being helpful was that there is about a 30% margin of error on food packaging for calories which makes calorie intake difficult to track accurately in the real world (yes, I know it can still be useful if you are consistent despite this). He also talked about how measuring your calorie output is challenging. He got his measured in a lab and it was lower than average for his build and height. He also mentioned Kevin Hall's study on UPF and calories without citing it. Food matrix was also discussed and the impact that different foods can have in terms of the energy we actually convert. I didn't get the impression that he disagreed with the CICO model completely, he just found it impractical. Regarding the argument that exercise only good for maintenance. I keep hearing this one too. What studies are they getting this outcome from? Thanks for all of your content.
A lot of his arguments didn't even make sense, example would be when discussing whether wholefoods or processed foods calories are equal, most people would automatically assume the higher quality foods would be better for you and I do to. But he points to a study in which 2 control groups were given their maintenance calories, one in whole foods and one in processed foods, he then goes on to say that the study proved eating whole foods was healthier because the people eating processed food would binge late at night and go over their calories for the day and start putting on weight. He then said this proves junk food is worse because it makes you inherently eat more even though he states he has no idea why that's the case as their is no scientific literature to support this. Now for me this study proved that people who eat junk food have less will power, it in no way proves one calorie is healthier than the other calorie when consumed calorie for calorie, which he maintains the study proved. Think how insane that really is, Imagine I was doing a running experiment to see if its better to run on high carb or low carb but then one of the group's just decided to only run 3/4 of the way then I say well them doing that proves I'm right, Lol what? That makes no sense one of the groups essentially didn't even take part in the study but he acted like them not doing the study correctly was in some way a win for him. The entire podcast is like this, what he says sounds okay, but when you break down what he said it doesn't make sense any sense.
Yes it's not very practical or easy. But if you eat a certain amount and you gain instead of lose, just cut your intake a bit more or up the amount you're burning. It's no exact science, but it's a good rough indicator. The likelihood of all foods being 30% over the calories stated on the package is low. If one or two are up a couple % while others are too low, it will balance out. At least within a certain margin. Let's say you're cutting at 1500 calories and you have 10% more through inconsistencies, it still won't change everything
Of packaging is 30% off, then you just calculate 30% fewer calories to eat. It's not rocket science. Telling people not to count calories because of packaging is moronic. How about you just tell them to eat whole foods or things we 100% know that calories of?
@@dash4800 no, he means that their is a margin of error for all measured food of around 30%. So McDonald’s for example can say that regular fries are around 400 calories even if they are 30% more than that.
Great information you are putting out. I have taught in this field for many years and still am amazed at how many people can still believe all the stuff out there (Tim Spector is just one of many). As you said - people have to find the least restrictive eating style (diet) that still works for them to maintain a realistic weight/shape while taking into consideration all the other contributing factors of course. I could go on and on also but in my latter years I simply stopped debating with stupidity.
Counting calories and rediscovering a love of exercise in my early 40s (and no longer being lazy!) were the key ingredients that helped me slowly lose 40kg about 5 years back, while intuitive healthier eating via home cooking, increased lean body mass from a religious resistance training schedule and plenty of incraesingly harder cardio have kept the fat off since, got me in the best shape of my life and fitter than when I was a sports-obsessed teenager. Thanks as always Layne for using your expertise and experience to cut through the BS of grifters and idiots. Working hard, changing bad habits and trusting well-established scientific principles for good health and fat loss is the only approach for sustained success.
I knew there had to be something or someone responsible for my situation other than me. Thank you magic man, I'll buy 12 of your books since you have absolved all culpability for my actions.
Well, I just watched Tim Spector. I’m happy your channel showed up. It helped me process my anger. It’s like telling hospital staff..hey, that hand washing stuff doesn’t make a difference. Calorie counting is a tool. Everyday people buy coffee that has the same amount of calories as a milkshake..sometimes more. They order a salad and drown it in high calorie dressing. Then, I am ballistic about the exercise comments. Oh well. I feel better now. 😂😂
I saw this video last week and I am so glad you responded. What utter nonsense from whoever this guy is. Even when you dispute these folks with hard evidence they begin to go into insulin theories or "they counted calories and it didn't work". 2 days doesn't count... I don't even waste my time anymore.
Calorie counting works great. Exercise is amazing to get in shape. Problems with these methods, people miscalculate calories they eat and often over-estimate calories they burn during exercise. There is no magic pill… hard work and discipline is the secret to staying in shape!
But as coach greg says, if you are counting calories and not losing weight, then you need to count fewer calories. If packages are wrong your your estimates are wrong you can just lower the amount you think you are eating. It's not rocket science.
Holy shit 👀 after watching this interview, I just had a feeling you'd be covering it 😂 I've read your book and got your Diet Coach app and am loving learning about energy balance. Thanks Layne!
Yea I can't comprehend how adamant he is about exercise not helping weight loss, that really seems preposterous and is counter to what a lot of fitness experts say.
I was reading a stupid article this morning that said calorie counting doesn't help weight loss. I don't always count calories anymore because I've become good with ballparking, but I do pay attention to the calories overall....and it definitely works. I pay attention to calories. I eat less. I lose weight. And when I go to the gym more, it adds to the effect. Getting so tired of hearing these so called "experts" say that exercise and calorie restriction doesn't work. Where are they getting this horseshit from?
@@stargazerbird That is probably because the people become bored of counting calories eventually. And then say: "Whatever... I will just eat a pizza now."
There's now a bunch of top level people who claim nutri and exercise are ineffective for weight loss. Exercise is not effective for weight loss, the data does support that. But, what of body comp and health? Exercise is essential there. Obviously calories are the key to weight loss/gain. Statistically speaking, diet/exercise is not effective for long term weight loss, and they're too blind to understand stats they use don't apply to individuals as they apply it. The new paradigm is only meds and bypass surgery is effective for long term weight loss, which is just damn sad. Fact is, education has no effect on confirmation bias.
Yea that negation of diet and exercise helping with weight loss leaves alot of people feeling like starting either of those things are pointless and they'd be stupid to waste their time when it won't work. But everyone knows deep down it works. I'm on my own journey I have to keep telling myself it all matters every step every calorie every sore muscle counts and I will see my results if I don't quit.
Why these scientist "authorities" like Spector don't ever talk about metabolic ward studies when calories are strictly controlled and exercise is enforced...and the subjects are in a deficit...everyone loses weight, everyone. So the bed rock principle IS calories in/out over weeks and months ultimately determines weight loss or gain. This fact has never been debunked in the highest quality studies, ever. The type of food you eat, how often you eat, how often you exercise are tactics built around the principle but not the principle itself. Good vid man.
Brilliant as always Layne. Although, I'm missing your weekly takedown of Paul 'I didn't know the Liver King is on PEDs" Saladino. In fact, I think you need a channel soley dedicated to critiquing him.
When I listened to that podcast I felt very uneasy with what Tim was saying. The Diary of a CEO has lost a lot of integrity as a result. Fantastic job Layne, it's so difficult for the average person to navigate through weight loss and fitness advice, and we need you to keep us on track when people like this confuse us all over again when we thought we had finally figured it all out!
You dismiss an actual scientist leading several medical fields because you felt uneasy and somehow magically an entire channel lost its integrity because of it? Talk about actual real confirmation bias and creating an echo-chamber of ignorance for yourself.
@@thomasjones4570Thanks for paragraph saying a whole load of nothing. As Layne explains quite clearly, who is also a scientist, just because one may be a scientist doesn't mean they are correct. The studies speak for themselves, there are many, many studies evidencing what Tim is saying is highly unlikely to be true than untrue. That's not confirmation bias, or ignorance. Clearly you're more of a poet, that likes to hide behind wishy washy words of blanket and empty misleading wisdom. You stick to that, and condoning those who are happy to push such agendas, and we'll stick to the facts.
@@RaveyDavey Sure, because of the calories, it may be healthy. But let's be real. The real reason he says that calories don't matter much, is because people like to hear that they are not at fault for their problems (in this case, being obese). It is, as far as I have seen, a very lucrative niche to sell your products. Like, special diet books or giving public talks to tell people what they want to hear.
This is soo true, once I started tracking calories last year for 4 months,I kind of learned how my body feels when I have my max daily calories and how 2600 cal a day look like ,I stopped tracking it,kept weight lifting ,and I can say it's changing how and what I eat,and I'm not gaining weight
Try actually listening to the podcast he is dismissing out of context. to get context. This man is lying to you, to push his books and products by continuing to push the misinformation that allows him to do that.
Never could figure out how to lose weight until I started calorie counting. been gaining and loosing weight at will over the past 10 or so years without any issue.
Excellent post. Spector has a very haughty view of his own intelligence. He was the same regarding vitamin D and COVID outcomes, dismissing its efficacy, when once again there was a raft of data supporting its usage . Good to see an evidence based response
How was the portion of obese people in the population of the US so small for hundred's of years - right up 'till the 90's? People consumed less calories, and moved more.
This phenomenon where we become conscious of common past behaviors (such as failed diet strategies) and use it as evidence to assume you'll personally fail in the same manner is a self-fulfilling prophecy. It's great to have reasonable expectations when there are factors out of your control. However, if you dismiss every weight loss strategy solely because other people failed, then you've effectively surrendered your free will. There's no boss or enemy or natural disaster to blame, it's just you and what you put in your mouth.
It can obviously cause weight loss, but it’s better at maintaining weight more than it is at creating a significant loss. I know you’re a fan of Herman Pontzer, and he pretty much says this in his book “Burn”.
It annoys me when people say "dieting doesn't work." Nothing "works" if you view it as a one-time task that you don't have to do again. It'd be like brushing your teeth once and never again, and then wondering why you have cavities later.
@@RaveyDaveyGoing by that logic, if you change your eating habits to Tim's "proper foods" until at some point you decide to stop and gain back all the weight you lost eating that way, then that means his dietary recommendations don't work either?
And once again...this...calorie counting works. And it works wonders for fat loss.I personalised diets for people whom had little food while being on deficit. Instead of 4 meals they had six with a proper selection off foods. So sometimes they had more food while being on 2500 calories then 3000 and that was against intuition seeing how they melting fat but it just WORKS! How is that even a discussion I can't wrap my head around it.
This notion that all diets fail in the long run kinda bugs me, because everybody changes their lifestyle over enough years. I decided to change my diet radically nearly a decade ago and I still enjoy the benefits of the weight loss and health improvements. However does that mean that during that decade I never fell off the wagon and gained a few kilograms back? No, of course not. Pick a bad moment and I was up 10 kg again. Pick a good moment and those 10 kgs were gone once more. By far the most useful behavior to adapt was measuring. It can be weight, it can be calories, it doesn't matter as long as you keep track. If you keep track, you know what direction your body is moving in and can reevaluate and adjust your lifestyle.
Thanks. Found this because I saw the CEO interview and found that , for an epidemiologist, he uses a lot of anecdotes and joing of unrelated dots to make a point. "Exercise doesn't lose weight" Say what?? If I run 10km (as I do) with a body mass of 60kg, then I use approx 600 to 650 cal (2600kJ). Now unless Newton was wrong, then that energy had to come from somewhere. Now if I then am undisciplined and go to the yellow arches and wolf down a burger meal, I would put back 8500kJ and therefore gain weight. Now that may be what Tim Spector or the people in his trial do, but I do not. In fact, what exercise, or running in my case has done, is change my eating and drinking habits. I do not eat lunch because I will be running later in the day. I do not binge drink on a saturday night, because most times I would either be running or cycling on the sunday morning . Etc etc So for Tim Spector to say that is completely disengenuous. Here's my rule. It doesn't matter what knowledge or professorship you have. If you are selling a commercial product, I won't take your advice.
I started watching the podcast earlier today and 10 minutes in said to myself; “might as well just see if Layne has a response video where I can get fact based information” sure enough
Wowwww that short video was a bullshimeter breaker !! even the host of that podcast was like "what the F is going on?!" I need a t-shirt that says "THE HUMAN RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL!"
Sir, you need to watch the whole interview. He said calorie counting doesn't show it works when you look at the majority of studies, and that was his view of most types of dieting. Same for exercise, lose weight you can over the short term, long term studies show it doesn't work over the long term. He advocates for eating whole foods and fermented foods. But like I said, you need to watch the whole interview, which I probably would have done before creating a whole video on it.
@@cynic252 Because that is called science. What this channel does is push "facts" based on opinion and mis-information. That is why Spector is one of the most famous scientists on the planet and this guy is on social media selling his books.

I don't count calories but I do know if I over eat or under eat I will gain or loose weight and if my weight is stable. I am at my maintenance for my current metabolic rate.
I quite like Zoe which he is involved in. There are things that the Zoe researchers don’t agree with each other on and they will admit that but they have some great discussions. He probably would probably enjoy a chat with you 😊
Well tim stated in the podcast that the calorie counts on packaging tends to be inaccurate. I think the more important advice in the interview was get a continuous glucose monitor and learn how your body reacts to food and just increase the variety of plants in the diet and add a few fermented foods. Did you watch the podcast or just the intro and post a reaction video Of course if you eat real food instead of highly processed food and weigh your portions you get far more accurate calories counts

You could just be conservative in your assumptions though as you said.
Keep doing what you do. Hopefully people will start listening.
No they wont because evidence talks louder
Layne is the best educator
Yes i watched the youtube video. Glad we have biolayne's perspective.
I’m a low carb eater by choice and using your app Carbon and finding success so thanks for your channel and the app!!
Holy shit 👀 after watching this interview, I just had a feeling you'd be covering it 😂 I've read your book and got your Diet Coach app and am loving learning about energy balance. Thanks Layne!
For the power of the algorithm. And the only man I trust online for all my health food fitness related questions.
I only saw the intro to the podcast with this dr. Tim and immediately thought about you, Biolayne... and found this clip. GREAT!
Not exercising certainly helped me gain a lot of weight, very quickly.
This has happened over and over.
Yea I can't comprehend how adamant he is about exercise not helping weight loss, that really seems preposterous and is counter to what a lot of fitness experts say.
Keeping a high TDEE is the key to always staying lean while eating as much as you want.
Did you say "Diarrhoea of a CEO"? 🤣 You rock! Happy Spector made it to your list. Please cover more of his past "research"...
Glad we have Layne in the industry to call this stuff out
Once again, Layne for the win!
I saw an ad for this on YT yesterday, and I thought "Why hasn't Layne done a video on this yet?". Thanks for reading my mind.
Sameee literally today i read one I was like come on 😂 was it the new York post?
@@UnitedHornet that's what I read also. It showed up in my Google feed.
@@marcus_ohreallyus yup same one
They are right re long term weight loss though. No interventions work long term. A mere 3% achieve lasting weight loss.
@@stargazerbird That is probably because the people become bored of counting calories eventually. And then say: "Whatever... I will just eat a pizza now."
Saw this this morning and knew I'd see a video from you. Love it.
I'm on my own journey
I have to keep telling myself it all matters
every step
every calorie
every sore muscle counts
and I will see my results
if I don't quit.
Love it when you call out the BS. Strange that his video crossed my recommended and within 24 hours comes your video.
The budget analogy is one of the best I've heard, great video!
Lmaooo i was just looking up what your UA-cam handle is to tag you in the comments 😂😂….and what do ya know. what a time to be alive Layne
I was so hoping you would cover this topic. Awesome as always.
@@kammyg9315 What did he say that is untrue?
@@RaveyDavey Sure, because of the calories, it may be healthy.
But let's be real. The real reason he says that calories don't matter much, is because people like to hear that they are not at fault for their problems (in this case, being obese). It is, as far as I have seen, a very lucrative niche to sell your products. Like, special diet books or giving public talks to tell people what they want to hear.
You're a legend Layne, always a great source of info. Thanks for sharing
LOL
@@cynic252 that's funny to you?
I was waiting for this after listening to the podcast, thanks layne.
It's about time this guy Tim Spector was called out. How could he sell a book telling people what they already know? Great job.
I gotta be honest man, part of me wants to try and help people and part of me sees these things and just wants to give up
I've said it before: if you brought out a t-shirt saying
HUMAN.
RANDOMISED.
CONTROL.
TRIALS.
I would buy the shit out of it.
Hahahaha I was waiting for this! I watched this entire podcast. Immediately thought “ Layne would destroy this “
I was watching the podcast and said, Papa layne must have said something about this guy. and here we are!!
So pleased you did this video!
Excellent post. Spector has a very haughty view of his own intelligence. He was the same regarding vitamin D and COVID outcomes, dismissing its efficacy, when once again there was a raft of data supporting its usage . Good to see an evidence based response
10/10 - superb breakdown
How was the portion of obese people in the population of the US so small for hundred's of years - right up 'till the 90's?
People consumed less calories, and moved more.
another great video my friend, always packed with info 💪👌
Layne here again to spit some truth
I saw that video in my feed and thought I will wait for you to break it appart
This phenomenon where we become conscious of common past behaviors (such as failed diet strategies) and use it as evidence to assume you'll personally fail in the same manner is a self-fulfilling prophecy. It's great to have reasonable expectations when there are factors out of your control. However, if you dismiss every weight loss strategy solely because other people failed, then you've effectively surrendered your free will. There's no boss or enemy or natural disaster to blame, it's just you and what you put in your mouth.
Thank you for this one!
You should listen to the whole podcast episode too.
There are 2 reasons exercises do not work for weight loss: 1) You don't do them 2) You don't do them enough.
Brilliant !!!! Thank you
Thank you for this.
Brilliant! Sincerely appreciate you setting the record straight on Spector's careless, uniformed comments.
When is the talk beween you and Tim Spector coming?
Please reach out to this dude I am dying to see that debate!
those biceps are goals
Etc etc
So for Tim Spector to say that is completely disengenuous.
Here's my rule. It doesn't matter what knowledge or professorship you have. If you are selling a commercial product, I won't take your advice.
I started watching the podcast earlier today and 10 minutes in said to myself; “might as well just see if Layne has a response video where I can get fact based information” sure enough
Damn these guys don’t stop
Wowwww that short video was a bullshimeter breaker !! even the host of that podcast was like "what the F is going on?!"
I need a t-shirt that says "THE HUMAN RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL!"
Thanks layne
Sir, you need to watch the whole interview. He said calorie counting doesn't show it works when you look at the majority of studies, and that was his view of most types of dieting. Same for exercise, lose weight you can over the short term, long term studies show it doesn't work over the long term. He advocates for eating whole foods and fermented foods. But like I said, you need to watch the whole interview, which I probably would have done before creating a whole video on it.
That video got recommended and knew it was BS right away, and honestly I had a hunge that you would cover it too 😂. Keep up the good work.
I lost 23 kg by combining calorie counting and exercise
Yes! Was already waiting for you to make a video about Tim and his nonsense.
I have just been waaaiting for this video ever since I saw some clips from that interview 😂🤦🏼♀️
This series is great because many educators who are intelligent use their beliefs to sound as facts.
Tim spector never said facts he constantly used the words "evidence supports"
@@cynic252 Because that is called science. What this channel does is push "facts" based on opinion and mis-information. That is why Spector is one of the most famous scientists on the planet and this guy is on social media selling his books.
@ThediaryOFACEO
The famous tagline,
“ I hope nobody’s listening, but if you are…”
Well, I hope nobody that is struggling with their weight and gut health was listening to that either……
Listen to Layne.
He's not stupid he's just selling books.
Bill Burr said: people who are overweight and claim they don't eat anything and can't lose wait should be studied. They are the key to solving world hunger.
Looks like another person using the 'nothing works for fat loss, but I have the secret so buy my book' strategy to make money 🤷♂️. Always good to see them getting called out.
Nailed it layne 💪 unfortunately a ton of people will still believe in Tim
Yes Layne! Keep up the good work mate, people like this need calling out. Talking absolute fucking nonsense.
I don't count calories but I do know if I over eat or under eat I will gain or loose weight and if my weight is stable. I am at my maintenance for my current metabolic rate.
Do you have a shirt that says “RANDOMIZED CONTROL TRIALS!”?
I love Steven and his podcasts but I’m so let down he would have even shared this. Please please LAYNE get on Steven’s podcast!
My brother sent me this full video. ASA I saw "calories doesn't work" I knew and was waiting for Layne's debunking
This is hysterical
I quite like Zoe which he is involved in. There are things that the Zoe researchers don’t agree with each other on and they will admit that but they have some great discussions. He probably would probably enjoy a chat with you 😊
Exercise and calorie monitoring/restriction doesn't aid in fat loss? Uhhhh.. I guess I've been doing the body recomposition thing wrong then.
So interesting, this interview came up for me on my algorithm I have not yet watched it but funny enough I had intended to.
I was watching this very video the day it came out thinking "I wonder if Bio will cover this"
Perfectly said.
Well tim stated in the podcast that the calorie counts on packaging tends to be inaccurate. I think the more important advice in the interview was get a continuous glucose monitor and learn how your body reacts to food and just increase the variety of plants in the diet and add a few fermented foods.
Did you watch the podcast or just the intro and post a reaction video
Of course if you eat real food instead of highly processed food and weigh your portions you get far more accurate calories counts
