This is a day in the life of the indigenous Sápara tribe who live within the Ecuadorian Amazon.
Today, their population totals less than 700 people, across 22 communities, and they are constantly battling to keep their culture, traditions and territory in-tact in an ever pressing capitalist world.
The Sápara, also known as Zápara or Záparo, once occupied some 12,000 mi² between the Napo River and the Pastaza in the Amazon rainforest along the border of Ecuador and Peru.
Early in the 20th century, there were some 200,000 Zapara. From the year 2009 on the Ecuadorian Zápara call themselves Sápara. The official name is Nación Sápara del Ecuador (NASE).
The Sápara people have a distinct language, known as Sápara, which is considered critically endangered with only a few fluent speakers remaining. They have a unique cosmology that revolves around their close relationship with the natural world, viewing themselves as an integral part of the forest ecosystem.
They possess extensive knowledge of the medicinal properties of plants and have a profound understanding of the intricate balance of the rainforest.
However, the Sápara people face numerous challenges, including encroachment on their lands by extractive industries, deforestation, and the loss of their cultural heritage. Despite these pressures, the Sápara people continue to fight for their rights, seeking recognition and protection of their territory, language, and way of life. Efforts are being made to preserve their culture and support their sustainable practices, ensuring the survival and well-being of the Sápara people and their unique contributions to the world.

These are the people that are true environmentalists. They can't pretend to care about nature because they live with it, they truly empathize with it and truly care for it.
Huge support for those people that tries to protect their culture. It breaks my heart to see them fighting just to not be erased from this earth.
I completely agree - this was such a heavy, eye-opening experience to see how they are trying to survive... not in the jungle, but from outside influence! 🤯

Growing up in the Piappocco tribe in the Colombian rain forest this reminds me of home. What I see over the years is for these indigenous people to survive is to become bilingual and become activists as civilization encroaches. Gareth, thank you for sharing this amazing look at the Zaparo people and their way of living! Keep up the good work and be safe. You do have some good soccer moves!
As someone who has had a number of similar experiences in the Oriente (amazon region) of Ecuadpr visiting indigenous communities I think you succeeded in conveying the special quality of their lives living sustainably in the rainforest. In order to protect the rainforest from more depredations of corporate interests it is essential that the rights of indigenous communities be upheld and protected.. Through videos like this one people can get a good sense of what sustainable living is all about not only in the tropical rainforest but in general.

2. Is that a daily search for breakfast? Or was that meant to be a memorable outing?
You could feel the pride when he said, "This is the only wealth we have." You can understand why they fight to protect it.

1. A lot of them will go back-and-forth into Puyo to go to college or work, and then will come back to the community whenever they can catch a flight (or long hike).
2. Usually they eat what we had for lunch (fish, yucca, banana, chicha) for breakfast - only when they're out in the jungle (hunting, working, trekking) will they eat these grubs.
3. Yeah, that statement hit hard! They were such amazing kids!!

Hi! Most of the youth stay in the community as they grow! In the past often kids left for school and work so the community set up systems so they don’t have to leave. There is now a high school in addition to elementary and the community created a eco tourism center called Naku to receive visitors and create income opportunities inside the jungle.

08:32 is very interesting to me as an African. What I can see is that the South Americans, Africans and Asians really have a lot in common. We always have things that we can relate to. These continents must definitely fight to preserve their ways and environment as we do actually rely on it more than Capitalists would understand. I too believe in the spiritual connection between flowing rivers and humans and yes not forgetting the animals as well.

@@RastaAfricanGentleman what ? no lol,most ppl on south America are mixed of indigenous and Europeans,and also lot of white ppl and some blacks and Asians,south America is the most diverse continent in the world,there are Bolivia and Peru that are mostly indigenous ppl but still mixed,and countries like Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil that are majority white (Brazil being a very diverse county just like USA) indigenous ppl got killed in the colonization and today they are a minority group even though they are the original ppl from the Americas, it's very sad,today they fight to preserve their culture and religions,Brazil the biggest country in south America have only 0,5% of indigenous population it's the lowest in the Americas,most indigenous live their life's in isolation in the Amazon forest where the whites and mixed ppl don't live bc it's not the best place to live for lot of factors...but yeah one day they where the ppl that lived there,and they love nature

This is beautiful. By far the most real and enjoyable video you have made. I love the simplicity of the people and the rich culture and how its being preserved. I have been to the Amazon via Brazil and I have never been the same and my values are forever changed. Although threatened but always real and I will always stand by the natives as one of them. After all I have the blood in my veins.

I grew up in the mountains "jungle" where there use to be no electricity, television etc... Living in the US, there are many things I miss in the village...my culture, the simplicity of life.....
