MiMa's cover of Van Halen - I'll Wait (now recorded straight :-D)

  • PLEASE NOTE: the audio here is heavily stereofonized, and my keyboard line is for the most part on the right channel, while the Van Halen's song is on the left. Be sure to listen to this video with a pair of stereo speakers or headphones, otherwise it could seem that I'm just pretending to play.
    After 8 years where I didn't touch this song I decided to record it again (for the 3rd time). But this time I recorded it with my cam straight on the synthesizer and not in reverse as in my 2008's video :-)
    I improved and changed some things in my playing compared with my last video of this song, so it's now more akin to the original. The audio and video quality is improved a lot too.
    Feel free to comment. If you have criticisms, express them politely in a constructive way and they will be welcome.

      @@geraldhartley It's because the audio is heavily stereofonized, so my keyboard lines are on the right channel and the original song on the left. If you hear this video thru a mono speaker you would likely hear only the original song and not me playing on the synth, as generally only the left channel is fed to a mono speaker. This is explained also in the video description.

    • @mima85
      @mima85  2 роки тому

      Yes, there's another synth line in the song, which plays some high notes as a filling. It's always the same keyboard that is being played and it wasn't done in real-time, after doing all the other song's parts they simply added that one in its own track on the tape and mixed it together with the rest (that is called "multitrack recording").

  • @sleeplessinphilly
    @sleeplessinphilly 6 років тому +1

    What about the other keyboard parts happening in this song? How can one person play all parts during a live performance, considering a human has only one pair of hands?

    • @mima85
      @mima85  6 років тому

      The answer is: multitrack recording :-)
      Keyboard parts are being played by the same musician and recorded one by one individually, then mixed together when producing the song.

      I found my Jupiter 6 in a local 2nd hand market website. Sometimes (not too often TBH) they pop up in such sites. It's just matter to keep an eye on them regularly, and with a bit of luck and quite a lot of patience at a certain moment one will be there for sale.

  • @micahj9828
    @micahj9828 2 роки тому

    It's my understanding this was done on a different synth. Oberheim? You're on a Jupiter-6. A bit of insight on how you mimic that sound would be awesome.

    • @mima85
      @mima85  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, originally it was done on a Oberheim OB-Xa or OB-8 (some says OB-Xa, some OB-8). The synth was recorded thru a guitar amp system (I think they used a Marshall stack) with a microphone, this is why the sound is so dirty and lo-fi in the original song, and that was intended.
      The patch itself is quite simple, here I'm using sawtooth AND pulse on VCO1 (Jupiter 6 allows to activate multiple waveforms for its VCOs) and just sawtooth on VCO2, with slight detune between the oscillators. Quite fast attack and decay on the filter and sustain about halfway, flat envelope on the VCA. These are the basics, then adjust detune, pulse width, filter cutoff and filter envelope timings and mod intensity to your tastes. For the detune, for this sound remember that the oscillators should stay quite close, they should beat slowly.

    • @mima85
      @mima85  Рік тому

      It was either an Oberheim OB-Xa or OB-8, amped thru a Marshall stack and recorded with a microphone placed at the amp's speaker. That's why the sound is so dirty and quite distorted despite coming out from a synth, they wanted that crunchy tone.

    • @amonster8mymother
      @amonster8mymother Рік тому

      @@mima85 I'm going to hazard a guess and say it was both. 8 think they might have switched to ob8 for the solo.

    • @mima85
      @mima85  Рік тому

      @@amonster8mymother That wouldn't make any sense. OB-Xa and OB-8 have a very similar sound, there would be no need to do such a swap. Instead, from what I read, the studio recording was done with an OB-Xa, and on live shows Eddie played an OB-8, which was more reliable than its older sibiling OB-Xa.

  • @robbelliii

    • @mima85
      @mima85  5 років тому +3

      Yes actually you're correct, the original was done with an Oberheim OB-Xa, put thru a Marshall amp stack if I recall correctly. As when I recorded the video I had the Jupiter 6 and not an Oberheim, I did it with the Roland.

    • @robbelliii
      @robbelliii 5 років тому

      mima14031985 you dialed that patch in just right. My ear cannot tell the difference. Great work and nice synth. I’d love to get my hands on a JP6 or 8. Probably never well however. I believe the 8 is the best all around synth ever produced.

    • @mima85
      @mima85  5 років тому +1

      @@robbelliii Thank you. Regardin the Jupiter 8 being "the best" synth ever produced, IMHO it's not. One of the best for sure, but not _THE_ best, actually I think that a "best" synth simply doesn't exist.
      I had a Jupiter 8 for a while, you can actually see it in a couple of my videos, and in the last months I sold it. I liked it a lot, but despite liking it I quite often preferred my Jupiter 6, which I still have and probably will end with me in the graveyard when I'll leave this world. It was painful to sell it, but at the end the machine sat in my studio quite unused (when not sitting on my lab's table with its hood openend, to have its technical issues fixed), and to keep such a synth just for the sake of owning it was not a sensible thing to do. Now in place of the Jupiter 8 I have an Oberheim OB-8, which I'm in the (slow) process of getting it back to "like new" factory specs. Here I found the fatness that somehow my Jupiter 8 lacked.
      "The best" synth is just the one that better fits someone's taste and needs, there's just no a "best" synth by definition.

    Uea that horn sound is snappier than the OB8 sound.

      Yes, I had the attack on the envelope a bit faster than the original sound.

      @@amonster8mymother I programmed the sound myself on the synth, the snappier attack on the envelope was a mine deliberate choice :-)

      Thanks :-)
      My synth was recorded clean with just a bit of delay, instead of being recorded with a microphone thru a guitar amp stack like Van Halen did with his Oberheim when he recorded the song, that for sure plays a role in it being more clear. I wouldn't call it better though, it's just a different sound character.

    This also acts like a tutorial...
    Or is it already a one ? Nah i dont think so.
    Great cover anyway .

    • @mima85
      @mima85  7 років тому

      Well it's not exactely a tutorial, because in a tutorial one have to play slow, explaining what he's playing and why, etc.
      This is just a cover, but I filmed it in this way (like nearly all my other covers) to make it act also as a semi-tutorial, so one by seeing clearly what I'm doing here can figure out how to play the song.
