I'd like to add that he was an absolute musical artist. I'm listening and admiring. I'm proud to say I played in an orchestra that performed this work. I sat here humming his music and I decided I had to put it on.

What an increadible artistry for a 15 year old boy!!! I'm astonished by its beauty. How cruel for this promise to end with 16.......

A real credit to the internet: making this piece more available. for years, the only way I could hear it was by calling in Friday nights to the classical station in Baltimore to request it.

Imagine this young man composing this magnificent symphony at the age of 15 years, then dying at 16. Unbelieveable and sadly.true. Each time I hear it I weep.

A young teenager wrote this!I played this in youth orchestra about 50 years ago and always wondered what else this young man would have written. Maybe he would have inspired sibelius to keep going.

He died of a ruptured appendicitis. This disease was not easily recognized then. My aunt, five years old, dies of the same cause in 1931. Heikki Suolahti left behind many other compositions, fragments of operas, symphonic poems, a violin concerto, first part of a piano concerto, lieds etc. The manuscripts are in the Finnish National Library and are still waiting for somebody to edit them.

I had read somewhere about the ruptured appendicitis. It seems that it was ruptured intestines, after falling down from a tree. But it was very sad anyway. He was so gifted. He might have grown to be the greatest musician of Finland.

This is a great music composition. The recording is in high fidelity which adds to the enjoyment. The genius of the composer is evident, and the music is pleasant and inspiring.

An interesting aspect: this piece (and others) were played for the first time after his death in his memorial concert. In other words: the composer never heard his orchestral music being played.

I posted in response to a comment but ill post it here: an orchestra director who selected this for us to play once, told us he died as a result of falling out of a tree he was climbing. Its always made me a little sad when I see this piece performed live. It feels like it captures his youth somewhere in the notes.

This is beautiful throughout! Would have been a fine achievement for a 40-year-old composer, yet this marvel was written by a 15-year-old.

I just recently got to play this piece in a community orchestra. It is every bit as amazing to play as it is to listen to.

Few composers during the 1930s created music this good.

Wow! This is 2019 and I stumbled on this just now =27th July. He must be the youngest composer that I know! Incredible. Finnish Composers are my favorites anyways. I'll save this for future listening!

When I hear Richard Rodger's' Victory at Sea'- it reminds me of Heikki Suolahti's 'Sinfonia Piccola.'

Seach "Sinfonia piccola (Suolahti, Heikki) - IMSLP" and you'll find the scores of the four movements of the Sinfonia Piccola.
    Enjoy !

Kuului Oulun Lyseon orkesterin ohjelmistoon 1960-n lopulla. Loppuosa nostattaa vieläkin vahvoja muistoja. Hieno pienois-sinfonia,

An amazing work. I heard a Finnish Radio recording of this symphony a long time ago, but I could never remember the composer's name. I only remembered that he had died at sixteen. There seems to be a some Sibelius influence, but this music is by no means imitation or less than Sieblius. I was struck by the exquisitely crafted harp part. How much touch-up did Hannikainen do on this, anyway? Also, how can I get scores or recordings of this remarkable young man's music?

An orchestra director who selected this for us to play once told us he died a few days after a lofty fall from a tree. I dont know specifically what the complications were that killed him.
