  • DISCLAIMER: This video is completely me speaking my own opinion on how I see the characters of The Owl House as neurodivergent. Also, this video is NOT in any means intended to be a tool or reference for self-diagnosis. If you think you may be neurodivergent by watching this video, other videos, or the show in general, please do research beforehand!
This pretty much makes up for all the autistic headcanons I had in mind to make videos about. And I don’t know wether I feel more mentally exhausted or proud of what I made. This took months of watching The Owl House and 3 months to write out, record, and edit. I hope you all enjoy this long analysis of the Hexside Squad characters from The Owl House as much as I enjoyed making it! Let me know in the comments if you guys want more analysis like this, just maybe not this long because this video took FOREVER to make. Make sure to like the video if you agree with my headcanons, leave a comment about how you feel about the video, and of course, subscribe to the channel to see this channel grow and see better headcanons, analysis, character studies, essays, and more!

I'm so glad someone FINALLY MENTIONED AMITY! People never seem to notice any neuro-diverant traits in her (I believe she as ASD). She just has gotten used to masking so much because she's from an abusive household and I find it so adorable to see her unmask (albeit only slightly) around people she trusts, like Luz. It's just so sweet to see!

THIS IS SOO TRUE and I feel like when it comes to Hunter actually being himself in Thanks to Them comes from the fact that he wasn’t allowed to be himself in the emperors coven. And people say that as if it’s an excuse to think he’s not autistic when it’s quite the opposite!

Id also like to point out with Amity that she misses a lot of social ques with Willow, like for instance when she came to Willow's house to talk about her situation with Luz she took Willow letting her in as she could info dump (another autism trait that she does a lot) about the situation with Luz, also in the Gus illusion episode (I forget its name) she missed a crap ton of social ques with Willow, and she has shown to have sensory issues, for instance when the Abomitron's alarm went off (wasn't that loud) she immediately covered her ears, and also in Thanks To Them we see that when Willow flashes the light on her she is visibly uncomfortable from it, and also we see that whenever shes exited/nervous she tends to grab onto her dress (examples of that are: when she became Grom queen with Luz, when she and Luz became an official couple, and when Boscha tried to ask her out) and she also plays with her hair when shes excited (shown twice in Hooty's moving hassle) and in general it seems that she likes to feel the texture of hair (due to her braiding Willow's hair) and also in Enchanting Grom Fight we see that after she had been annoyed several times the day before, assumed to have been annoyed that morning by the twins/odalia, and has constantly having her personal space breached by Hooty, we see what I think was a meltdown due to her having a violent outburst on Hooty and not stopping even when Luz tries to stop her, overall I am in full belief that Amity has ASD and glad people are talking about it

Honestly, what sold me on the autistic Amity headcanon was probably that episode in the library where she and Luz got sewn into a book.
Something about Amity's favorite place being the library, aka a place that is quiet (a lot of autistic people struggle with noise sensitivity) and she can focus on her hyperfixation, the Azura books, in peace and without anyone laughing at her. But what really got me is the way she wanted Edric and Emira away from there because they were breaking the rules. I am autistic too and I remember being kinda like her, I'd also hate it when some other kids in my class would be cruel to the (nice) teacher or would cause trouble for fun. I just found that annoying and juvenile, and I really wanted to focus on the class, so some other kids found me stiff and loved to push my buttons like Edric and Emira. Her writing a diary might also point towards neurodivergence since a lot of us find it easier to write about our feelings than to speak, though her upbringing could certainly have a hand in that as well.
So yeah, I'm aware that this is a very personal "growing up neurodivergent" experience, but it was so specific that I just couldn't help but see Amity in that. Good catch with the way she seems to flinch at the flash of the camera- this doesn't affect me, but my eyes are also very sensitive to a specific kind of harsh blue light and blinking lights. Her having Ghost is, of course, a reference to Dana's cat and more broad depictions of witches with cats, but I can't help but connect it to the fact that cats are often seen as an "autistic animal" (often very paticular about who's touching them and the way they show affection, which is more subdued, is oftened likened to autistic people. There's more of that, but I don't want to write it all, you can look it up 😅)
    Cool video, very thoughtfully made!

Fun fact I also have both autism and adhd; if you have one you’re more likely (but not definitely) to have the other! I personally think all of the main charecters we follow are neurodivergent in some sense. I think most of the gang has Autism lol
I think that Amity is just really good at masking to a point where some fans don’t pick up on it
Like the ‘I’m so good at masking nobody could ever tell I was autistic’ then proceeds to do something very autistic
I struggle with volume control so my freind’s help remind me when I’m yelling because I don’t realize I am, most of my freind’s have adhd but I only have a couple of autistic freind’s oof.

One little thing I’ll point out here is how you’re using the term “low-functioning autism.” People with low-functioning autism often require everyday support and are frequently nonverbal/highly socially challenged. For the characters in The Owl House, *high*-functioning autism describes them much better. Characters like Amity definitely still exhibit traits of autism, but Amity is still a fully capable individual. She may require some support in her everyday life, but not nearly as much as a “low-functioning” autistic individual

I've heard directly from those with ADHD that they can also get really focused on specific things.
I heard them actually discussing it together how they both experience it.
I don't recall clearly ebough to quote, or even elude, but I know they were saying how they can really focus on interests, and I know they both have experience woth work on vehicles, and one has a significant interent in it. And that he prefers worling with his hands, doing physical activity. He struggles greatly with the online work which has taken priority, especially with there not being a science teacher for his class anymore, yet no body listens.
While I, someone on the spectrum, are the complete opposite. Not that means anything in conparing the two.
Though I think it's our opposing natures, that didn't lend us to getting along very much.
Part of me is honestly kind of scared to speak with him in a direct manner, opting to not say much at all, if he does start a conversation. Besides needing time to think about what I say to people, and not wanting to start something that he won't let settle.
But he honestly isn't a bad guy, a bit intimidating and much at times, but, at least from my perspective, you can instantly see why, and you don't really blame him, even if it results in out bursts, that aren't exactly safe behaviour.
    I.E. flipping desks.
But he aldo recognizes when to remove himself from a situation, but due to his activity, people don't like removing themselves from his business, staff members making it worse for him.
I'm painfully aware of what's that like, people not knowing how to stay out, where they don't belong, people who are of "higher authority" especially school staff members it seems.
Part of me wants to try and help, but I know the last thing he needs is someone coming across like they're talking down to him in a moment like that.
Boy, this went off topic, I apologize, I've just been dwelling on these subjects for a while now, and I simply don't know what yo do. If could do anything. If I even should fo anything.
    I just, don't, know.
Edit: this isn't even my main account. So, I'm probably not going to see replies to this unless I get notifications from UA-cam Studio, which would be nice if they thought about that. But I'll try to keep a look out for those who want to discuss.

ADHD isn’t just short attention span, though. It’s a stimulation based attention span. The more stimulation provided by something, the more focus given by the ADHDer, resulting in laser or hyperfocus on activities or topics that provide stimulation. So, Luz having great amount of attention for her special interests/hyperfocuses can still be read as an ADHD trait and not autism (not to say she isn’t autistic coded in some ways but yeah)

i will say that someone with ADHD can also hyperfixate on something they’re really interested in and bsically block everything else out. its not exactly the same as a special interest for autistic people but its similar. so just because Luz can focus on something she’s passionate about doesnt necessarily mean it has to be autism or that it automatically rules out ADHD
you said Amity stims when exited or nervous but only provided one example and i cant think of others. neurotypical people also stim sometimes in these situations. i think the reason Amity seems like she doesnt like to be touched is the same reason she is hesitant to show affection or any other positive emotion, and that is because of her parents. she had one distant and apathetic parent and one verbally and eotionally abusive parent. CPTSD can cause someone to shut down emotionally and not allow for healthy relationships. plus she had siblings that constantly picked on her. also for most of the show her and Luz aren’t dating and Luz doesnt know that Amity has a crush on her until some time around that point, so Amity wouldn’t necessarily expect Luz to touch her all the time, although she definitely wouldnt be against it beause of her aforementioned crush
i'm pretty sure the reason Hunter didn’t understand certain slang words is because he has been sheltered all his life. this is the first time he ever went out and actually hung out with kids around his age. he's almost exclusively been around the Emperor's Coven, the coven heads, and Belos, so he wouldn’t know much slang, and because of his lack of exposure and a social life, he wouldnt understand a lot of the social cues. this doesnt necessarily make him autistic tho. he's been brainwashed as a part of a cult where his "uncle" is the cult leader

There is, as someone with Autism (High-Functioning Autism) it’s the placement on the spectrum. I believe she meant High-Functioning and not Low-Functioning when talking about Amity as the low/high isn’t about how effective the autism is, it’s how well you can function. Eg, High-Functioning Autism would mean you could function mostly ‘normal’ however there are certain things that need to be accounted for, which I think well sums up Amity. For me this means carrying earmuffs for noise, knowing when things are over-stimulating, and having strategies I can use for when I’m over-stimulated, however I can still live my life without Autism effecting me while not in these situations.

I just wanted to say that I have autism too. More accurate I have it in the Asperger's form. And I have to confirm you in many aspects. Luz Noceda from The Owl House is an autistic girl indeed. This is true. It could be that also The Collector has a special preliminary stage or a mild form of autism. I mean this celestial and astronomically designed child that defeated Belos in the end of the second season. This Collector might be a similar autistic case as Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint Exupery. And that owl snake with the name Hooty is a case that could also have a small light form of autism. But I am not that secure which character does have autism and which one not. Please tell me more about neurodivergent characters of this series!

@@kalenkotalikThis is brilliant! I wish you a lot of success in your analyzations. The character Hunter has many autobiographical similarities to special autistic cases in the way he struggles for acknowledgement in society. In a similar way as The Collector, also Hunter has got a negative experience due to the way special other characters dealt with him. He is even a traumatized character because of Belos. And in this way he is navigated by fears in a certain extent. And in fact, Hunter has these features even with me in common. There are special other autistic characters from different television series I can remember too. First of all I have to think of Carl the rabbit from the well known Canadian cartoon series Arthur and friends. Carl is designed a bit stereotypically, but nevertheless many aspects of true autism in the Asperger's form are even represented by him. But I also have to think of the main character AJ Gadgets from the series Hero Elementary. The way AJ gadgets behaves in the society and to the other three main characters of the series appears a little regular at first. But also he shows typical autistic patterns especially in the way he learns and analyses the aspects of his locations and his environment. A further example of an autistic character is the inventive princess Entrapta from the NetFlix series SheRa and the princesses of power. This girl is designed in a very funny way. The way she speaks and explains important things is even really fascinating, also the way she uses her own long hair tails as her own hands. But there are even further characters in other series that also represented autistic cases, but more the really deeply profound autistic cases. In this regard I have to think especially of the kid Ben from the series Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum. He is a character who was even mobbed by one of the main characters of the series but was then acknowledged in a very positive way by the same character. And another profound autistic character I can remember is the child Sean from the Disney series Fancy Nancy Clancy. Sean is presented as a very isolated autistic character. The behavior that he shows towards the other children from the circle of friends of Nancy, very quickly creates the impression in front of the most people as though he had deficits in noticing the topics of the other present children. And it is shown that Nancy's friend Lionel at first had to explain the way Sean notices the world, so that Nancy understands the behaving of Sean the first time. But this case really shows a very deep form of autism. Now I have a new question about that topic that I want to ask you. Which further autistic characters do you know from different cartoon series? Please answer me that question and tell me also more about your next videos! I am totally looking forward to your results. I wish you good luck and a lot of success in the creations of your next videos. And have a blessed and wonderful time! Lion Fiedler also known as Emil Jann Brahmeyer

    • @emiljannbrahmeyer
      @emiljannbrahmeyer Рік тому

@@Beeanimates That is not quite the case here in Europe. And to be honest, I am even grateful for the fact that the term Asperger autist has not been repressed yet. There must be a differentiation among the autists, which must be also recognizable under the particular designations. Although Asperger's syndrome is named after the medical doctor Hans Asperger, and his autistic patients were sadly subjected to euthanasia murders during the Hitler era, the term Asperger autism is not necessarily historically burdened. Because Hans Asperger himself was not one of the murderers, but instead his perverse medical colleagues, who were the death doctors. Hans Asperger himself historically proven has been even resisting against these murders of his autistic patients by the Nazis. And Hans Asperger consequently tried to keep his autistic patients alive. Therefore, I consider it a great honor that we, who are particularly strongly synesthetically oriented autistic people with semantic and episodic memory emphases, have actually been named after him. But I do not want to impose a label or label on you. I will never, ever force you to use the term Asperger's. I just wanted to give you a glimpse of where this term ultimately came from. I know that this is a very horrible historical chapter and I also know that many people avoid such horror topics. That is also clearly understandable. But as long as everyone adheres very clearly to the motto "Never again" and ensures that the exclusion and persecution of minorities such as autistic people, Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, intersexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses and evangelical free church Christians and mentally disabled people will never again be socially acceptable here in Europe , we live in an emancipative and progressive society and make sure that we continue to remain successfully democratic.
