Owen Crippa - The Man Who Attacked The British Fleet All Alone (In a Trainer Jet)

  • As the British Amphibious Task Group entered San Carlos Water in the Falklands on 21 May 1982, the Argentine High Command initially thought it was a diversion. They sent some aircraft to investigate. One of them was an MB-339, a light trainer/attack aircraft flown by Teniente de Navio Owen Crippa. He first spotted a Lynx helicopter and was about to attack it but then, he saw the entire British landing force in a small bay. He took the aggressive approach and attacked all alone in an aircraft never meant for such a task.

Not all the assets in this reenactment are 100% historically accurate. HMS Argonaut is represented by HMS Achilles (F12). Lynx helicopter war represented by UH-1 Huey. All of the British transport and utility ships are approximated by whatever wasn't completely different in DCS World. Owen Crippa was flying alone but there's no way to remove the second pilot from the MB-339. These are not mistakes but only available choices. Thank you for your understanding.

they were limited, that's true: the Miarge III and the derivatives that the Argentine Air Force had were Full Interceptors: designed to fight at high altitude and very high speed: take them to a Dogfight at low altitude and speed against stubby subsonic planes like the Sea Harriers put them at a very clear tactical disadvantage.
And that is leaving aside the R-530 and 550 missiles of the mirages and the very new Aim-9 ¨Lima¨ Sidewinder that days before the Royal Navy had received from the USA, with a broad appearance.

I was there on the day and watched Owen Crippa's attack and I think your video gives a good representation of what happened. I was stood on the helicopter deck of the Canberra and having heard some of our ships shooting looked down San Carlos Bay to see a lone aircraft. There must have been some reticence to open fire by some ships until a definite identity could be established but once Lt Crippa opened fire and it was clear he had hostile intent, all the ships opened up with everything that they had. Owen Crippa was a very lucky and very brave man that day! I write briefly about it in my own book 'The Band That Went To War'.

Small historical note, the British warships entered San Carlos in the dark at about 2.30am, and it was pitch dark, the only lights were the gun flashes from the 4.5 inch guns on HMS Antrim (I think it was Antrim !) firing on Fanning Head as we turned very slowly into San Carlos, Fanning head looming up above us on the Port Side. I was on the deck of another ship close by and it made us jump, it was a silent approach and that was very unexpected !! The Argentinian pilots gained huge respect from the British, they were exceptionally brave, I dont think anyone could question that. On a personal note I have an Argentinian friend and we have never fallen out about this, war is sh*t and we did our jobs.

I have the HONOR of meeting Owen Crippa, and that's just one of his actions: after drawing the Task Force layout on his right leg scorer when flying over it FOR THE SECOND TIME!, he lands on base, jumps from the MB- 339 when he was still running the runway, and shoutingly asked the ground mechanics to rearm his plane to go out again, while he offered the situational logistics data to his bosses, and asked for their permission to take off again urgently for another attack.

Owen Crippa, all by himself, flying on a light aircraft has managed to open up a gap in the radar coverage of the British fleet, because his attack has knocked out the ship's Type 965 search radar, and it wasn't fixed until the Argonaut has departed the Falklands for repairs. Later on this gap was utilized by the A-4 Skyhawks you've mentioned, which struck the aforementioned HMS Argonaut. If it weren't for the faulty fuzes of the Mk 83 bombs, the Argonaut would've sank in the attack, as even without detonating, the bombs caused a considerable amount of damage to the ship (fire in the forward Sea Cat missile magazine, where two missiles detonated, heavy damage to the boiler room, leaving the ship dead in the water).
He has shown a considerable amount of bravery and courage, for pressing on with his attack. Thanks for sharing this rarely published fact with us! The video was excellent, as always, keep up the good work!

The Pucara de Benitez flew only with the pilot and without the co-pilot too.
As an anecdote, Owen Crippa's helmet had a sticker attached with the rabbit from Playboy magazine. A small mistake, in the first pass Crippa did not note the positions of the British ships, but instead escaped from the bay, he realized that he did not have information for a good report, so he passed through the bay again. Greetings from Argentine Patagonia.

There was not much combat between Mirage IIIs and Sea Harriers, because the Mirage is a full-fledged, high-altitude, high-speed Interceptor, and Sea Harriers are subsonic aircraft developed for low- and medium-altitude combat.
Generally, the pilots of the FAA and the Royal Navy did not coincide in heights, since it was not at all convenient for each one to go to the optimum operating height of the adversary.
the few times this happened, it was the Argentine pilots who went down to the operational level of the Harriers, obviously in a disadvantageous tactical position.
This is how Captain (Post) Ardiles loses his life: Ardiles was a First Lieutenant and was serving as a pilot of a Mirage M-5 Dagger in the VI Air Brigade based in the city of Tandil.
On May 1, 1982, the day of the baptism of fire of the Argentine Air Force, Ardiles' Mirage M-5 Dagger together with another Dagger piloted by Captain Carlos Alberto Rohde took off for the Malvinas, armed with 30 mm cannons and two Shaffrir missiles each.
Rohde's Dagger does not take off due to technical problems, and Ardiles decides to continue alone.
Already in mission, the Malvinas information and control center guided Ardiles to intercept an echo that would be an English Harrier plane; the radar echo morphed into two combat air patrol (PAC) planes; Despite everything, Ardiles decides to engage in combat to protect the A-4B Skyhawk squads, defenseless against the Harriers PACs.
It was shot down by an AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missile.

It was not so: the information that Crippa obtained with that flight (when escaping among the English fleet, he flew over them again to draw their exact positions and types of vessels on his right leg notepad) was of capital importance for the Argentine commanders.
The Linxs that he came across was a helicopter that was used as an "Early Warning": shooting it down would not have meant more than a simple personal score.
Crippa precisely, knowing that his weapons are of small caliber and limited in quantity, aimed to the ship's radar and communications systems, trying to maximize the result of his bare weapons.

There were 2 reasons why Argentina lost this war. #1 was that they stuck their toes in the cold water and didn't jump in, and they gave up too quickly, and they did not dig down for the fight when they had many weeks to do it. And they immediately got an arms embargo by France, the U.S. and even its neighbor Brazil. And Chile, another neighbor, deployed thousands of troops along the border to show their support for Thatcher the Iron Lady, preventing the Argies from concentrating fully in Las Malvinas Islands. The #2 reason is that Brits are a tough and disciplined lot. They took a full dive into the cold water. When you go to war you go all the way, not half-way, otherwise don't start one. Maybe I'm contradicting myself here but it's amazing Argentina lasted 76 days fighting the world's 5th largest military power, and an experienced one of many regional conflicts. Greetings from a military buff from El Salvador (Central America).
