- Discogs recently announced that their database has climbed to over 750 million releases in users' collections. That’s a jaw dropping number of catalogued titles. But let’s be honest, the normal person only owns a tiny fraction of those - and is typically content with their collection. After all, most people are in it FOR THE MUSIC!
We recently sat down with Jeffrey Smith, VP of Marketing at Discogs, to discuss the variety of reasons why people collect. Are records an investment? A nostalgic journey back in time? A way to support the artist? Check out the discussion on the latest episode of The Discogs Insider.

Discogs is one of the tools I use in the valuation of a store and dealer. With over 7k assets, the platform helps inform on an artist's or genre's discography. Collecting music from 1935 onward, I can evaluate if the purchase meets my VG+ criteria.
If an asset is priced too high on a consistent basic, the platform assists in windowing out sellers.
I use Discogs for the 'you have to be foolish to price it so high'. I ask dealers and stores if they realize keeping a record price so high because they use Discogs as their Bible kills their business model.
Great show.
Enjoyed your video I love how a lot of people are talking about how much their collection means to them and how meaningful it is now but in 84 or 85 a lot of people sold their collection to get into CDs saying how great CDS were I guess they’re vinyl didn’t mean as much then??? The same people now are talking about how terrible digital music is Just kind of funny!!!!!
I was one of those that abandoned vinyl in 1986 went straight to CD. Fast forward to early 1989 I got back into vinyl. I realized I missed the interaction between the music and the record playing ritual.
Funnily enough i had this video playing in the background whilst creating another list on Discogs
Hope you enjoyed it! Thx for watching
This was a nice episode ❤.
Thanks for watching!
I store all my vinyl records on vhs cassettes and throw the records away. Started with all my original blue note pressings. Vhs is so much warmer. I love my vhs collection
Congrats? 😎🤷♂️🤣
@@NTXVinyl thanks. Accidentally recorded millionaire matchmaker over my Tina Brooks true blue. Dang it
