- I bloody love filming the vids and know SO many of want to know how to do it on your rides too, so here's how I do it.
You will need:
Power metre.
GoPro or similar camera to record.
A fast mate or motor pacer.
Garmin Virb software (it's free).
Patience.
Any questions let me know in the ol' comments as usual. Hope you enjoy!
Also.... let me know where you want to see me climb next :)

High five, Richard!
Must be a huge boost to be able to chase Richard up a climb like that, but as you said, he’s a fast climber even when loaded up. You did well to keep up with him Katie. Great work Richard. Love the videos you both create. Thanks!
Been playing with VIRB all afternoon and figured out how to get the fit or GPX files from Garmin Connect and Strava. Works great and looking forward to more vid editing tomorrow. What a great share for those of us who record our rides. love watching all the measurements while watching my vids.
So glad it helped! :) Enjoy
Completed my first ever 100K ride just now, Thank you Kay Kay for the inspiration.
Me and the wife(Sharon) are always wonderinghow you film those shots we were suspecting a scooter but never heard a engine but could have been edited out but then thought about the fumes then I said oh my god she must have a other bicyclist! That’s dedication to you Kook and thumbs up to him. You are very lucky to have him. Now he needs a good nickname lol. Good video and thanks again from boiling California. Jc
Ahhh thanks Julio, yeah Ricardo as we call him is a good egg. Honestly he's like family, like me younger brother :)
If I had filmed Katie I would have camera in front and the videos would always end with she pass the horizon and left me behind :). Well done Richard holding Katies pace! Great video as always from Katie Kookaburra. Have a nice day!
Everyone needs a mountain goat/packhorse as a silent pacer on climbs! Chapeau Richard!
Great video, thank you so much! Excactly what I was looking for, as I just started to edit my own videos and want to add power data to the upcoming ones.
How incredibly informative! I've always wanted to get a behind the scenes look at how you create these awesome videos. No doubt I will need to watch this several more times to absorb all the information you provided. Really well done. BTW...the ride, the scenery and all the emotion of it was absolutely grand. Love the 'after-the-ride' narration and comments.
My pleasure! x
Thank you so much! very helpfull video! and very nicr rides!
the video color looks so nice.
Thanks Richard, the man BEHIND such lovely videos, who always rides in FRONT of Kay Kay with a Camera BEHIND the bike. So simple. 🙄😲☺️☺️
Perfect timing, my GoPro just arrived in the post yesterday =)
Ooooh exciting!!!!!
Thanks a lot Katie, i've been using Garmin Virb and a Gopro for a while now and totally agree about syncing video and data the most difficult part.
What I didn't realise is that you can drag the little man to our chosen start point and get a google street view. a great help and thanks again.
Fantastic to see the complete picture .
Richard is a legend and wants an electric bike for Christmas.
I could see it in his smile !
Ebikes are way too expensive.
@@KennethSmith-lb4ln I'm hearing you Kenneth , most bikes are way high priced, electric or oxygen powered !
lol
Great work Richard 👍 He always seems to get it right. The videos are really interesting to watch especially with your overlays
Thanks 👍
Katie, you seem so wild! In the good sens of freedom and fun. 🥰😍💝 Ok, now let's learn how to make a GPX overlay. 😀👌
Bloody hell. Richard has a good engine! Fair play. Useful video, cheers Katie.
After watching some of your videos, I decided to try this, managed to do some similar videos on DashWare, can be downloaded for free. Had the same problem with syncing the video, good tips from you, though surprised that you're not using GPS on your GoPro. Maybe it's not accurate enough for syncing?
There is another way to do overlays. You may export gauges as PNG sequence, transform them into animation video (use ffmpeg with qtrle codec) and then add them on top of your video in Final Cut Pro (or another video editor). This method allows you to crop and tweak colours without affecting overlay. And final video quality seems to be little better.
Not always , because , though .
Thanks for the tip :)
So much friend zone I can feel it across the pond
Katie, I've seen other videos on this subject and so far yours seems to be the easiest to follow. Saving your vid in my personal playlist for when I need to do a stat overlay. Thank you and safe riding!
Glad it was helpful :)
@@KatieKookaburra Thank you and take care.
Thank you for the quality tips, too (4K filming, zooming in)! Your beautiful vlogs really showcase the technique.
Ok. Downloaded virtual, will get the chilli tech out and have a play. Also had a plastic moment and fitted an 11-40 to the bike. Seems ok. I fitted a sun tour cassette (I am a sucker for shiny stuff and a red anodized spider. Yum. The seam chain, not so much. I will probably swap it out for a shimano so that it fits with the 105 kit. But after some swearing with the indexing it all works. Taen it for a spin, so all good. Will test it in anger later. Initial thought are that the bigger cassette will destroy hills. The top gear i am moving from a 12 to 11, so slightly more effort to use, but this is a good thing. I also splashed out on lights and computer. Got a roam bundle. Omg it's so easy, i love it. I also got an exposure race 15. A good middle ground for mtb and road i thought. So yeah, i have invested a lot in the next audax (yes i am hooked and having a mad moment). So anyway, your advice has paid off so far. It wont make me faster, or a better cyclist, but I think I can manage anything with my set up. Ummm. Thanks
Thank you for sharing your talents not everyone has the passion and patients to make great videos. And as for your partner he can do what he loves to do will filming a beautiful Cycliste smashing a epic climb.
Ahhh thanks. Richard is my mate... he is like my brother not a partner haha!! Thanks glad you enjoyed!
Thanks Richard!
all what i needed. Thanks a lot. Greetings from Colombia!
Fascinating how you put you're videos together with the on screen overlays. I've wondered about that.
Easy to understand with a little editing experience, I've used Premiere Pro, it's similar to FCP.
Also cheers to your camera man! They never get any love.
Thanks Katie. I always wondered how everyone did this. 👍
Proper helpful. Thanks
richard in for the long game
Also get the fit file in Strava by exporting "original", also, if power data doesn't work do this
Good info that I can use on my sailing videos and perhaps a future riding video. Interesting to see how little vibration is transmitted into the seat post mounted GoPro video clips ... maybe the camera is set to enhance image stabilization. Thanks for an informative video that gives us a window into all the work that goes into capturing and editing high quality videos. Keep well, stay safe and Hold Fast !
We could all use a Richard when climbing.. Chapeau to that man 👏
Well done Richard and thank u Katie for ur doing so amazing and exciting vlogs xx
Thank you, looks fairly easy, I shall have a go!
Super helpful. Two-team efforts!
I bloody love the vids too Katie!
Very good and informative video, thanks a lot
Great video! Could you also give grading tips to beginners who don't know much about editing videos? Thank you
thanks Katie just edited my first video using gamine vibe just need to work on some commentary and try to set a subject that people will be interested in but thanks you are an inspiration and motivate me to work at getting out there do me a favor and have a look at my vid and give me a thumbs up i used the make video section for ease working on a better edit cheers
Go Richard!
Thanks for this! Really helpful
Thanks for video! But I don't get why this VIRB app cannot do lining up automatically using the timestamps? Video has start time and end time, gps has start time and end time...
So that’s how you do it 😂
I’m guessing you could do this from a first person perspective too with the go pro on your handlebars?
Could you do a whole ride and load to virb and then crop the whole thing to where the segment starts and ends?
Yeah exactly, you can do that for sure :)
Thanks for the tutorial! I just your previous video and asked myself how that's done.
You're nice on the eyes on or off the bicycle. Can i say that?
Super helpful thank you
so if you have a 4 hours ride and edit it down, to say 30 mins, do you have to adjust the G matrix at every edit point so that it matches? OR.... Can you load all the clips at once, load the data, synch it, then chop it up into a smaller video? that makes sense in my brain but im not sure it translates to words very well. TIA
Yeah I do it all as one so it all attaches right then save that video then chop it up :)
@@KatieKookaburra thank you :)
Nice Job... really insightful. Love KK ❤
Thank you for that video :)
Awesome, thanks for sharing your video secrets.....now where can I find me a Richard?
Wow much respect, this is tough!
Richard = #LEGEND 🙌🏾
hello, thanks for the video. what are your video settings? especially fps?
Can't you just overlay the full stats over the full climb Gpro recording, which is non-stop i pressume? then after this you can easily select the scene's you want and leave the uninterresting bits out..? Anyway the quality is top and very good to watch. Good job Nerdy!
How the heck do you stop Garmin VIRB from crashing haha
Not sure I understood this part: does the .fit file data come from a cycling computer or is it from an app like Strava?
Thank you!
Do you need to turn GPS on GoPro? Thanks
Anyone knows where the Sony camera is kept? Dont have a gopro yet :)
THX Richard
Great video, but cant wait for your Everesting session
Not sure what you mean..... 🙃 (Come back Monday!) x
Class! Thanks so much.
No worries :)
Smart lady. Thanks for sharing....now where to find my fit files lol.
Do you have a Garmin or Wahoo? Garmin... just plug it into your computer and it will be in the activity folder. Just find the right date :)
@@KatieKookaburra Thanks Katie. As I mentioned in another comment. I found both the GPX and FIT files in both the Garmin and Strava programs I use. Syncing the file with the vid is a bit of a challenge but I'll figure it out. Only for my personal pleasure so no big deal.
Richard is a beast of a climber he must feel like Buckaroo the amount of gear you load onto him 😀
I tell him it's weighted training haha
Ha 👍🏼
he is soooo in the friend zone
Hello, so I followed every step you mentions to where I finally got the overlay I wanted. But when I hit export I get a message that says “Export of video failed. Unknown error occurred during video exporting.” I was wondering if you’ve ever gotten the same message and what I can do to fix it?
Hmmm not sure. Do you have enough memory on the device you’re saving it to?
That was interesting thanks, hat's off to Richard camera bicycleman. Did wonder how you did it, I'm guessing it gets easier to edit the more you use it, but roughly how long does it take to edit that sort of video.
Yeah more you do it easier it gets. From importing the footage to uploading the vid I would say around 2 hours :)
There is also DashWare www.dashware.net/dashware-download/
Garmin VIRB edit doesn't work anymore with Google maps. Is there any good alternative?
Dashware is terrible for me
It does work after changing a setting. Problem is the use of the Internet Explorer. I've got this solution from the Garmin forums, it will change the browser to Edge. Next time you start Virb everything will work again.
Open command prompt or powershell in administrator mode
Run the command to add the new entry: REG ADD "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION" /v VirbEdit.exe /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00002ee1
@@OliverScheffer-Photography thanks mate for this solution. As soon as I try this I will let you know if it works for me.
@@OliverScheffer-Photography it works as before. Thank you very much for this solution it makes me and mine friend very happy. Thanks from my friend and me.
@@djolejo You're welcome, glad I could help you!
Fix no longer works
What to use for gps?
Do you know if it is possible to add more skins to the software for the telemetries?
Not sure what that means so you are clearly better at this stuff than I am :)
wow
No power is showing on the logs but does show cadence which is from me powermeter
You have to add power as a metric
Thank you, i have a question: how to Turn mph into km/h?
Hmmm not sure. I think it’s surely what you recorded it in. Did you record in miles or Km?
@@KatieKookaburra my garmin information is Km~
Richard could have a sub channel with your mate Dave supplying comedy interjections ...just an idea
hahaha that would be bloody GOLD!
So Richard is your version of a golfers caddie 🤣
Hahah he's a bloody gem! I swear he's the little brother I never had! :)
when I go to export in my maxboom it says that there is a unknown mistake and can't have the video. I HAVE DONE EVERTYTHING RIGHT ...WHAT A PITY, THIS IS NOT WORKING ANYMORE
Make sure it’s MP4 :) and also make sure there isn’t a glitch within the gopro footage. Maybe try another bit of GoPro and see if it works ok with that
@@KatieKookaburra everything is correct, still when expecting it says unknown mistake with all videos I tried to.
It no longer works for me
Dont work on ipad need 64 bit windows PC to work as well
Cheers
@@KatieKookaburra your video was/is ok and i so wanted to do this for my own as well but was disappointed to realise that it's not as easy as you make it look and that despite the vid is 4 years old it still needs modernish tech to impliment😳😖😖
@@KatieKookaburra just out of interest what model macbook you used? It seems I may have to purchase one in order to try and do this
You could have added a heart rate overlay while you were in there ;)
Nice blouse!
👍👍
This video isn’t valid anymore as software doesn’t support Google Maps API.
It would suck if you get to the summit and realise it's not recording. Take two !
Hahaha ahhhh I check a few times don't worry!!!! haha
the google maps is not working in 2024
What age r u ,I know I shouldn’t ask
You lost me on hello.....
Bye 😎
Katie Kookaburra cheeky.
Katie Kookaburra sorry. I’m not IT savvy
Does Richard have to give verbal motivation?
He's like Chris Froome to your Bradley Wiggins a la TDF 2012
@@KatieKookaburra trying to figure out if that is extremely topical or just coincidental :-)
