    @patrickJMT haha, not what I meant. I'm planning on spending about 8 hours total today studying alongside your videos. So to be clear, it does NOT suck! Just admiring good penmanship

    Fxy is calculated by taking the derivative of fx with respect to y. Fx= sin(y). Thus Fxy(The derivative of x with respect to y)= cos(y)*1. Fxy=cos(y)

    D(x,y)=0 iff the quadratic form associated with the Hessian is 0; thus, Hf(a) is called semi-definite, and the point a is degenerate. The second derivative test gives no results, so the only way to determine if a is a local max/min or saddle point is to investigate the sign of f(x)-f(a) in the neighborhood of a. hope this helps.

    I don't understand why Calculus teachers can't teach like you. Don't know why they makes things so complicated, yet you make it seem so simple =\

    Yo quick question how do you know how many critical points you're supposed to get cuz that always confused me . thanks love your work

    Patrick, is there is a similarly general way to optimize a function of more than 2 variables? Or would I have to use a computer?

    @ismekin yea that would be using lagrange multipliers

  • @jballa425
    @jballa425 10 років тому

    patrickJMT So to find the critical points you must set each partial equal to zero then plug the values you find into the other partial equation set equal to zero?

  • @patrickjmt

    viva austin!

  • @belliveau5
    @belliveau5 11 років тому

    If you check first for your partial with respect to y, you'll find that either x=0, or cosy=0.. so y=npi/2... why not consider that?

  • @subinidikula6396
    @subinidikula6396 10 років тому

    Ok stupid question...@ 2:30 when you say siny=0, so y=npi. In addition to being an integer, why can't y also be 0 since sin(0)=0?

  • @opposumpossum8217

    sorry, im a little bit noobies here, is this still the 2nd partial derivative test or method using lagrange multiplier?
