Save up and get yourself a set of TDK 700wr headphones. I have used a set for the last year, and love them. No wires, and I hear every little signal as loud as I want. I think they actually enhance the signal over what a nice set of wired headphones can do. You have to use a short extension and mount the box to your machine. The pin is prone to breaking loose on the transmitter when the detector falls over. I use velcro to secure mine. The TDKs are easily the best mod I ever made to any detector.
Alex Eaton every time I tried to go there to get stuff they were closed, bizarre hours, 10-noon sat, closed sun, 9-5 during the week, closed tuesdays cause, well, fuck tuesday, closed every tiny piss ant holiday ever created anywhere in the country...so it'll pretty much be the same as always, order on ebay
Good mods. I like those right angle guitar cables, especially on SGs and other top-mounted guitars. Seen plenty of cracked tops with straight plugs on a top mounted guitar input. Rock on!
Nice one Jim. As long as the mods suit you. You can handle a little extra weight. Nothing worse than batteries going flat in the middle of a field aaahhh. Enjoyable watch. Nice one Dave
jim, it looks like ur G2 is on its last leg...i mean it seems as its seen better days and is realy in bad shape!! if it craps out soon wat are you gonna get for a replacement tector?
Geeze, figured you would have went with a car battery to stick with the AWJ tradition. Maximum run time, built in work out and could be fitted with a car cigarette lighter. Plus the biggest bonus in the chance of having too many beers and leaving the headlights on, you could JumpStart your truck.
I use the powerEX 9.6v rechargeable and i get 3 full hunts off of 1 charge never had a dead battery been using the powerEx on my g2 for 3 years. Also use 1 in my pro pointer and in my tesoro detectors.
Mr.Motarded Mike off the shelf nimh 9Vs are BAD...takes 2 for one afternoon of hunt. I ran the AAs in the IDX for years, get great run time on them. THIS solution cost around $1 using the radio shack going out of buisness sale parts :-)
Nice Mods Jim. I too made a last pilgrimage to our disappearing RS (same town as you :-) Found a good many items. Too bad Fix-it Bob beat us there. No good discrete components hardly at all. I did get a few and one nice Duracell USB Li-ion packs as well as some Arduino stuff. Now a question... You are running 12v from the 8x AA pack to the detector? I assume though it must have a 5v or 3.3v v reg anyway from the battery. Years ago, I made a similar mod to my Whites Spectrum. Set it up to use 1 or 2 6v RC packs in parallel. On your back light - a white led inside might work better. It should disperse the light on the lcd better, though what you did looks to be fine :)
UReasonIt nimh AAs rated 1.2V each, the charger pushes them a little higher, so the full 8 pack puts out 10.6v, voltage regulator should be able to handle it.
roadkillscjim That is nice it has a real voltage reg :) Whites says not to push the Spectrum much over 6V. I have never understood why they did not use a better regulation system. In the future I may add one or at least a ubec. Thanks for the info and good hunting in the boro!
UReasonIt I find it difficult to believe anyone in this town knows what Ardunio is! Did I say that out loud? We should go dig the tot lot for beer money sometime.
LOL! Jim I love watching you. Funny Bro and keeping shit real. Dude you need to be working for teknetics instead of the idiots they have designing their detectors. GL+HH TTYS The Junkjunkie
Brian de Cruz 6-8 hours is pathetic run time, perhaps you should take your own advice? Different machines and different size batteries will have different run times. This G2 has 1 9V, when it's an alkaline you get 20 to 30 hours, the best 9V rechargeable I could find only ran 4 hours. The White's IDX would give me 30-40 hours on a set of regular 8 AA's, 30-35 hours on good Nimh. The difference is the size of the cells, a 9V is 8 stacked 1.2v cells, while a AA is a single 1.2V cell, think about how small the 1.2V cells are inside a 9V compared the size of AA bat. 8 AA cells will always be able to store more total charge than a single 9V. At least until super capacitors are improved enough to be used as long term storage to replace batteries.
roadkillscjim try running yours a bit hotter ..... your battery will NEVER last longer than 8 hours son .... you may be a tech whizz but some of us are a whizz at getting the most out of our detectors WITHOUT turning it into 'roadkill' scuse the pun ! FYI your videos are the reason i got a G2 in the first place so thanks for that ! just try looking after it !

You will now receive a letter from Comcast; your first name will be an expletive.
Now, go to the beach!
W.
So what do you do now radio shack is shutting or is there other companies you can get these electronic bits an bobs from?

Great video. Really enjoyed it. Hope you make some big finds with that thing.

Only one thing left to say ... ITS FOCKING AWSOME !!!
That's some mighty fine afro-engineering Jim!!!
Cool mods Jim, Your right it would be scary messing with all the guts of your Machine.
Like Johnny Depps character in Loathing Las Vegas. Was waiting for some reference to "bats."
Bummer about this week's weather Jim... Sorry bro.
Be well,
Al-Fu
Did you fix the small ear jack when you had the back off?
Kenny444 Tourist SEE, THAT WOULDA BEEN THE WISE THING TO DO, I never pretended to be smart, eh? ahahahahahahahahahahahhaha
Jim just keep doing what you do, I like it and very much appreciate your effort.
Nice video! I like the Mods.
that's one way to fix it....

I fukn hate hidden screws, unless I'm with the missus of course.

i see postal materials in his future. Jim always get's it done.
brad ford No offence but wow .... he needs to try looking after it better jeez !
i thinking you can mount a frying pan with a small propane tank on the shaft.. you can make the bacon and eggs..

***** I thought about that, but I need to leave room for the future upgrades, the cup holder and the keg cooler. :-)
so thats what you were talking bout, awesome.

Cool mods. I'd be afraid to mess with my machine, I'd mess it up for sure.

roadkillscjim LOL yeah I know, and I was born here! Sounds like a plan. Maybe we can get together sometime. Send me a PM.
Pick up that trash you threw on the ground ... Lol
Hola, acabo de comprar el mismo detector en ebay. Es identico al tuyo! Creo que es ese!
LOL! Jim I love watching you. Funny Bro and keeping shit real. Dude you need to be working for teknetics instead of the idiots they have designing their detectors. GL+HH TTYS The Junkjunkie
Genius!
I LOVE YOUR MODD'S,,,, THERE GRATE!!!!!!!!!!!
Tu peux pas acheter des piles ou comme moi 2 rechargeables et en avant .
Au lieu de tout bousiller avec ton système de bourrin
