  • This is my crude method to calibrating the sunroof motor and position to get the sunroof auto-open/close to work correctly.
    After tons of researching online forums, I couldn't find a fool-proof solution that would get my sunroof to properly operate.
    Eventually I stumbled upon this method and it seem to fix my issue. I persume it would work for 2001-2007 Toyota Sequoia's and 2000-2006 Toyota Tundra's
    The vehicle I'm doing this on is a 2001 Sequoia.
    Let me know if this video helps!

    Thank you for this video, I was able to fix mine today following your steps. I would like to mention, after going through the whole process the motor didn't turn. I pressed the tilt button and then it turned. I repeated the steps again and the motor went through its cycle. Just thought I would mention this because I thought the motor or the switch might have been bad. Works great now. Thanks again for making the video!

      My old sunroof motor is doing the same exact issue as yours. It would only tilt but not go back or do anything else. I also tried a brand new motor and it wouldn’t even work at all. Any help or feedback would be appreciated! Thanks

    This did not work for my 03 Limited BUT what did work was removing the motor from the track and leaving the sunroof completely closed, then using the key in the driver door to fully roll down the windows then back up again using just the key in the door. This recalibrated the motor and brain allowing me to use the buttons at 75% normal operation. The only remaining issue is closing from the tiled position, but that does not bother me since the sun roof now fully slides open and closed as it should.

      @SharpieEasternn  15 днів тому +1

      I have actually dealt with that before, while on a roadtrip. Provided you don't have a physical blockage, you should be able to close it with either of these methods.
      I was able to fix it by doing a dance with the tilt buttons and the open/close button. Eventually it moved enough to close completely.
      Alternatively you could rig the sunroof motor directly to a power source like a 9v or drill battery to move the sunroof manually.

    • @SharpieEasternn
      @SharpieEasternn  3 місяці тому

      Hey sorry for the late reply. Sometime the sunroof motor can over-extend the glass to the point it thinks the sunroof is closed again, and in this case pressing the open or close button will only move the sunroof a quarter of an inch or so.
      Provided your sunroof is lubricated and moves freely, the way to fix this would be to do a dance with the open and close tilt button and the slide back buttons until the sunroof reaches back to a point that is considered opened, and then it should start responding correctly to input

    No matter what I do, I can’t get my skylight to work right I bought two motors one more controller and it just sometimes I’m driving it just decides to open and then it gets stuck and I have physically pushed it hard to shut it so I’m thinking I might’ve wrecked the teeth in the rails?

    • @SharpieEasternn
      @SharpieEasternn  3 місяці тому

      Interesting. I'm curious if you can give me some more clarification on "decides to open" while you're driving. Does the motor randomly decide to work and open the sunroof? Or does the glass just randomly slide backwards without any help from the electric motor?
      If that latter is the case, then your sunroof cassette is definitely beyond savable. The cables should hold tension on the sunroof so it is impossible to open without the motor's help. The inverse is true as well, it should take a great amount of force to force it closed from the open position. If your sunroof is okay and the cables hold it in tension when closed, you possibly need to physically clean each individual tooth of the sunroof cable with a metal pick and lubricate the cable assembly with some white lithium grease (The spray works really well for getting into tight spaces that you can reach). The grease originally used on the sunroof does not last more than 5-10 years and will cake up to the point that it can cause major resistance in the sunroof cable, enough that it could strip out the gear on the electric motor.
      Also let me know if the motor spins freely when not attached to anything, so we can confirm if the electronics and wiring is all correct.

    • @susanstebila8707
      @susanstebila8707 3 місяці тому

      @@SharpieEasternn both, I did sit on the roof for a while and then I forced the skylight open by hand and I might’ve ruined the teeth or I might’ve bent the rails. Is that possible?

    • @SharpieEasternn
      @SharpieEasternn  3 місяці тому

      @@susanstebila8707 Well if what you're describing where the motor randomly starts working and decides to open the sunroof is true, then I believe you've got something electrically going on that is causing issues. I wouldn't know much past that, it's possible somebody messed with the wiring related to the sunroof to cause that for some other device they were trying to wire up. Or the control board that mounts to the roof with the buttons is internally shorted causing the sunroof to trigger randomly.
      As far as physically shutting the sunroof causing damage, it's very possible. They we're not meant to be closed by hand and when doing so you risk getting the cables inside the cassette out of alignment and also sheering off the teeth on the cables.
      Your best bet here would be to find a replacement sunroof assembly. This is very do-able from a junkyard. You would need to remove the headliner and all the upper interior trim around the headline to access the sunroof unit. The assembly isn't complicated, it simply bolts to the roof and all the complicated cable bits are secured within the assembly and don't require you to mess with anything.

    I am having a problem with the exact same model we thought the motor was bad and removed it and installed a new motor but it would not do anything after installed. With it plugged in and not installed the motor engages without issue
    But after installed into the sunroof assembly the motor will not turn on what am I missing

    • @SharpieEasternn
      @SharpieEasternn  2 роки тому +2

      It could be a couple thing
      It’s possible the sunroof track (aka cable or cassette) is very gunked up and stuck. The sunroof motor for these Sequoia’s aren’t very strong, so if the track has any resistance in it the motor will be too stressed to spin. This is the most likely since you mentioned the motor spins freely when not installed
      You could try to clean the track, as teeth engagement is very important for the motor to apply proper torque to move the sunroof cable.
      When I repaired my sunroof, my cable was full of old brown chalky grease. I had to use a metal pick and individually clean in between the teeth on the cable. I also washed the area with simple green and did light scrubs with a green pad to finally get the dirt out
      Another thing I had to do was remove the metal bracket that the cable sits on where the motor bolts up. I believe it’s two Phillips head screws that hold this bracket, and the cable sleeve slots into it. I think it acts as both a guide for the cable and motor mounting but also a grease reservoir
      Basically, I cleaned up all the old grease from the cable area as much as I could and repacked the area with white lithium grease. Only then was my sunroof able to move
      After I opened the sunroof, I use a spray version of white lithium grease inside the cables from the top down just to keep things lubricated.
      You might also be able to use your hand to gently help the motor get started, although this shouldn’t be a permanent solution. It shouldn’t take a lot of force so if there is resistance, it’s best not to force it and break the cable
      Another possibility, although unlikely, is that the sunroof motor is worn out. This probably isn’t the issue though, since you mentioned you bought a new replacement motor but thought it was worth mentioning as a possibility.
      Eliminating resistance in the sunroof is key. Hope this helps

      @@SharpieEasternn my man. You are the bomb! You’re so damn good as explaining this over text format. Super impressive and I am a new subscriber because of this! You explain really really well. I would really recommend from a creator standpoint that a good critique of your videos is to never fade to black in between these shots. Add something or just jump cut. People would much more rather watch more footage of your truck (because they have one and who wouldn’t want to look at them some more 🤣) or if you just forgot to add more video clips when you were fixing it, then just take a video of yourself talking to the camera about the same content. I have my own UA-cam channel and have learned this a long time ago from the criticism that I had when I was first starting out.
      Not to beat a dead horse, make more jump cuts. That will elevate your videos. Also when you record again try to remember to explain more and have a helper record you if you need two hands or invest in a $10 wrap around mount. They’re incredible.

    • @SharpieEasternn
      @SharpieEasternn  Рік тому +1

      By "fully close" do you mean that it's just barely flush to the roof of the car or that it is open enough that you could stick your hand through?
      If it's just barely closed, that mostly what my video covers. Unbolting the sunroof glass from the track and using the adjustment screws to align the sunroof up and down to match the roof of the car. Then, by unbolting the sunroof motor and running it backwards and forwards without any load on the motor, you can reset the start point of the sunroof to restore the auto open and close function.
      If it's open enough that you could stick your fingers through it, then you've got a bigger issue. First thing would be to confirm the sunroof motor operation. Does it spin freely when hanging down and with no load on it? If it doesn't, you'll want to either rebuild the motor with new brushes or replace it. The motor isn't super strong to start with, so one that is starting to get stressed will give up on moving pretty quickly. It may also help to clean the sunroof cable if you're still having issues. Read my comments to some of the other people on this video, I go over how you can clean the track with a pick and lube it with white lithium grease
      Once you've established that the motor is okay, then it might help to run it disconnected to reset the stop point of the glass. This might give you enough to close the sunroof, then re-do the calibration like I show in my video.
      Let me know what you've tried and how the sunroof motor is doing

      Good gear contact and meshing is crucial to movement. When I took mine apart I found the cables to be packed with brownish and hardened grease. I had to use a pick to clean each slot of the cable as well as the moonroof gear on the motor
      Once it was all cleaned I repacked the cable and gear with white lithium grease, you can use whatever grease you want tho.
