I’m from outside of Portland Maine…& about 8 years ago I took my beautiful little daughter to one of Brett’s shows at one of the sweet intimate rock clubs we have in Portland ME. Long story short…back then, my little girl & I would have fun daddy/daughter dance parties…& I’d often play various Brett Dennen songs for us to dance to…so he kinda became like my 8 year old daughters favorite musician at the time. But long story short…when I took her to the show…& she stayed out late like a grownup…cause Brett was signing merch at his merch table…she got to have the most amazing experience. Cause when we got into the meet/greet line after the show…he was incredibly gracious. He came right over to us…& walked my little girl over to the table…& gave her a cute little signed Brett Dennen kids shirt. And he was incredibly generous with his time…& talked to her about her school, hobbies, etc…it made my little girl super happy. He was so nice…like a saint almost. And remember…to my little girl, this was like meeting a huge celebrity at a concert. Cause even the smallish venue must have seemed like a stadium at her young age. Moral of the story…my little daughter is now 16 years old…& we still have dance parties to Brett Dennen…while she’s getting her practice driving hours in for Driver’s Ed.
This is truly incredible to read. Music runs deep, especially when our parents imbed the joy of sound and movement into us at such a young age. I was the same age when my dad started playing Bob Marley, tribe called quest and digable planets to me. Your daughter may age, music may change. Every time she hears his songs, she will think of you, like I do with my father.
Good lyricist, just has funny way of pronouncing them. He holds his tongue down on the bottom of his mouth when he sings like many singers do and it sounds like a lazy baby voice.
He opened for Corrine Bailey Rae in LA, performing barefoot with his guitar and 1 drummer. I bought his album right after his performance during the intermission. I love this artist!
It is so funny that some comments would consider this version as not as good as the original. It is in fact so great that one could argue that it is far better than the original, even though these kinds of comparisons don't make any sense. This version is so wonderful because it is Dylanesque in the sense that Brett dares to confront his own song with his emotions, feelings, fears and hopes while he is performing it, thus making it something original. Brett Dennon is such a beautiful humen being, one of my favorite people I would love to meet and talk to if I ever was so lucky. Please keep on doing what you do, Brett, and come to Europe more often!
My goodness. What a wonderful song. One of the best I've ever heard and has ever been written. I just covered it on my channel, but I bow down to this man's arrangement. I am humbled listening to him sing it, but I still wanted to bring my version into the world. Crazy times met with beauty. That was my aim.
Do u realize meaning behind the song, it is so emotional. If you say it is bad just because he looks upset than u just fucked up. It adds to the song, this probably one of the greatest versions
@SheriffTanner I agree, though I like him either way. I think he just has that catchy voice that you can always appreciate, even when it seems like it's being drowned out on the albums. I think that's why I aprreciate his early albums better than the latest two.
Mr. Dennen should be the next Mormon prophet. ‘The Church’ would progress more in one song than in a decade…. ‘Love will set us all free’ folks, don’t forget it.
"So maybe sometimes bad things do happen for a reason. Like your hot nanny getting fired. Or how getting suspended can get a relationship back on track. Or how facing a tough situation can bring you closer together. Be careful, though, because around here, if you start believing that bad things happen for a reason, it hurts that much more when they don't. Laverne was in a car accident on her way to work. She's in a coma and unresponsive." JD, Scrubs.
personally i think this is when brett dennen is at his best. acoustic arrangements like this. i think the studio albums are fine, but they get brought down by trying to fill that empty space, and make the songs seem bigger. under normal circumstances this would be preferred. however, i think with an introspective acoustic singer/ songwriter style of music such as this, the arrangement should be toned down, as in this video. it provides an earthier, more intimate feel. just my opinion
At least Heggie apologized (sort of). Didn't know Brett has a sister. I wish I was, or could at least meet him. Disbelievers are always jealous and skeptical. Oh well, my admiration for Brett is real.
Why did the lyrics, "Working your finger bare to bone. Break your back make you sell your soul." change In the video? (Deleted) Political pressure during a recession?? Check it out no kidding.
@larissalover1 Doesn't it though sister. God almighty! You're beautiful..you just gotta be. I love you and I'm with you. Kisses to you and your taste in music and men.
Dude, Brett you need to eat something bro and maybe you would have more energy and put on a more charismatic performance and not break your arm while playing the chord C over and over.
This guy didnt get the recognition he deserved
fr so underrated
Is he dead?
The good ones never do. Thats how it works.
@@aramis762 no, ha, but it did sound like that by the comment. But go see Dennen. Great bare footed groovy music!
Brett Dennen is a purely free soul! His music, body language, and outlook are all his own, and it's beautiful.

I've heard a lot of songs in my lifetime and this is probably my favourite. The melody, the lyrics, the imagery. I am free in it. It is free in me.
Best lyricist I've heard in awhile.
Good lyricist, just has funny way of pronouncing them. He holds his tongue down on the bottom of his mouth when he sings like many singers do and it sounds like a lazy baby voice.
@@kylehenderson8569 100 percent correct
I'm 29 now and i've been coming back to this song since middle school. Still just as powerful.
his lyrics are amazing

This song gives me damn chills.

When are you going to be back in Portland, OR?
Would love to see this in a reggae version
This is good! There’s another cover I like by Joseph Solomon
PS...hours and hours
Alone in his own universe...
And he sings it....thanks
It isn't a new stanza. There's just a "censored" version of the song that takes that stanza out. Apparently it's so true that people can't handle it.
I'll take both versions.
My soul hurts, I wish I could help the world, but all I can do is help one person me..
Scrubs brought me here
Bet you never expected someone to comment 8 years later saying their from house.m.d

+chefkhalipha helping yourself is the start. when you have yourself together, help another.
if you can't enjoy this.. means you listened to one to many Ke$ha songs

larissalover1 hi 8 years ago man
He sounds nervous
i liked him better when he was chunky....
@exodx234 nope you are looking in the mirror man
uh..
It's actually quite a terrible version, he's singing way too fast. I understand he's anxious to finish but he's killing the song. :/
Has he got a speech impediment?
OMG he's moving like a stupid paralityc ! What a funny guy, a real american hero ahahaha
He doesn't seem very comfortable playing in front of an audience. Not nearly as good as the original.
I actually like this awkward version better, a bit more vulnerable and raw with emotions. Different strokes for different folks ;)
This is the worst version ever -.- it's like he's cryin all the time
Dude, Brett you need to eat something bro and maybe you would have more energy and put on a more charismatic performance and not break your arm while playing the chord C over and over.
Bro you need to do something other then troll people on UA-cam doing what they wanna do.......
Bro for real he looks dead and did a completely off performance
