I have the utmost respect to these comedians and the producers for allowing the show to end on a profoundly mature note. They chose to go out with a message, and challenged the audience to be sober and not laugh for once, I respect that. More artists need to take a page out of their book and challenge their audience.
They actually ended on a poo joke, that's the real joke. The ending is hilarious because it's a callback to their discussion about ending the show with a poo joke vs serious note from earlier in the season.
Late to the party, but it hits harder knowing that Holmes lead a life dependent on none but clarity and reason. Putting Holmes through dementia or Alzheimer's would be hell for him.
This is insanely sad for what’s normally such a light hearted show. It adds up so well, the look of despair on both of their faces, Webb knowing he’s going to lose his best friend, and Mitchell knowing that he’s wasting away. The way the music cuts out when he says “I know” and all you hear is the clock ticking in the background, and how there’s no laugh track when the nurse makes a joke, and the credits roll. Truly a masterpiece in British entertainment.
It's great comedic obsevervation. You laugh then cry. I got the same vibe from their skit, " The Gentlemen." ua-cam.com/video/uRbj1Q4tXNo/v-deo.htmlsi=wwpn5uzQVcHcqRKL
I really like this sketch. It really brings home the whole tragedy of dementia in that we're laughing at someone's expense and then the horror of being in the midst of it while you slowly fade away. Quite brilliant and proves one thing about comedy: while it makes us laugh, it also sets us up for one hell of a gut punch.
If you saw the Australian TV series Mother and son the woman who played the mother, Ruth Cracknell, carried the dementia off brilliantly. Forty years later its still bloody brilliant
What a fantastic idea to end a comedy show! One of the key elements of their humour is surprise, is letting situations take unexpected turns. There you sit, expecting one last epic joke from a comedy show and end up gutted by exceptionally well acted drama that hits donkey kick-style.
This sketch made me cry so much i only saw it today on netflix (25/11/2018) and omg it made me cry so much ,when he said "i know i just can't clear the fog anymore" it hit on such a level especially since my mam was dignosed with early dementia she's doing great bless her heart but i see her sometimes with the same lost look and it breaks a daughters heart. I wonder why they wrote this sort of sketch as the last one and if it was a nod of resepct to blackadder
I'm partial to most British comedy, but these two at their best make Armstrong & Miller look like schoolboys giggling at farts. What a fine example of their work.
i would love for this to become an actual film, where Holmes has to crack one last case to prove he's still got it, but also have to battle with his mind slowly falling apart :'( i never knew this could be so sad
There is a book and a film called Mr. Holmes about a very old Sherlock, who lives in a country house and reminisces about old cases as his mind falls apart and he desperately tries to keep his brain working.
Yes! They even reference the end of Blackwater and talk about after making sooooo many jokes about things it was important to show not everything is funny... And then they went and did their own take. Which could have gone so wrong, but I guess this subject was personal to them, they did it so well
John Keily well, who wouldn’t relate to this sketch honestly? Especially those who have lost their loved ones to dementia. God knows how many relatives they must’ve had with it.
@benarielraven David's characters are often at least equally objectionable to Robert's characters, they're more intelligent but more manipulative while Robert's are silly but genuine. In other words sometimes their characters are like Pinky and The Brain, another favorite comedy duo of mine.
This was so goddamn hilarious much like how I love all of the sketches they do!!!! Easily the best one they've ever done!!!!........... It's just........... When David Mitchell was saying all of his lines! I still found every one of them funny, up, until, he said ".......I, just can't get the fog to clear."right when I was thinking it was a setup to some dark humor joke that they usually do!!!!!! That line hit me like a mother f****** sledgehammer to my heart!!! I couldn't speak I couldn't move I didn't know what to do when I heard that line. And God damn it if Robert Webb's acting didn't help any!!!!!!! Holy sweet mother of hell this was a great ending to a series
I'd swear the tears in Robert Webb's eyes are real,as are mine.A wonderful performance in a terrific sketch.
When he says, "John...I know" then "I can't get the fog to clear", I almost cried
I did.
"I can't get the fog to clear" almost brought a tear to my eye.
Almost?

I think it was an homage to Blackadder goes forth

Totally unexpected. The acting was worthy of an Oscar, especially Robert Webb. Thank you.
That ending; you can practically see Watson's eyes about to burst into sobs
A senile Sherlock Holmes...
Could there be a more tragic fate for such a man?
There’s an excellent film called Mr Holmes with that exact premise.
@@Viewer-ld5rc I've seen it, and yeah, it's a good bit of work
Late to the party, but it hits harder knowing that Holmes lead a life dependent on none but clarity and reason. Putting Holmes through dementia or Alzheimer's would be hell for him.
"Oh, a Mitch and Webb sketch about Sherlock. I bet its really funny" I said.
"But he was wrong" said The Narrator
This was bittersweet. Having a family member who had dementia, it hit home.
Was so surprised by this sketch when I saw it at the end of the series. SO well done. Heartbreaking. Thanks for posting it.
4:30 - the way Watson is at a loss for what to say is some really lovely acting from Robert.
This is the saddest thing I have ever seen!
It is sad, but what moves me more is the loyal friendship of Watson.
This knocked me for six when I saw it, there's dark and there's dark. That Mitchell and Webb look really was very, very good.
Bloody hell. What an ending.

Still one of the best things they worked on together.

I’m assuming this is a callback to the ‘Black Adder goes fourth’ sketch from series 2.
Sir Digby Chicken Gut-Punch 😢

Hope things are going ok for you ❤️ they do reference blackadder going serious at the end in an earlier sketch
@@bobbiwib twice. They joke about how they are going to end it.
@@DembaraLemoon even with telegraphing the ending within the show...they still get us.
If this had been the only thing Mitchell and Webb ever did, I'd admire them for it. What a genius pairing.
I came back to my link on this skit. And, yes, still close to crying. This is one of the saddest things i have ever seen
That's horrifically sad
I'm partial to most British comedy, but these two at their best make Armstrong & Miller look like schoolboys giggling at farts. What a fine example of their work.
Armstrong and Miller and Mitchell and Webb have all wrote sketches for each others shows.
Upstart crow is rubbish.
It was nice of the Inspector to play along. Five and a half minutes of amazing acting
"A two pipe problem". Wow. I have no words.
i would love for this to become an actual film, where Holmes has to crack one last case to prove he's still got it, but also have to battle with his mind slowly falling apart :'( i never knew this could be so sad
TheSatanshunter the last x man film, Logan was exactly that. And it was the best one of all. I agree with you.

There is such a film. It's called Mr. Holmes.
Webb holding back the tears. So many feels :'(
Damn that was sad! I guess they were pulling a Blackadder Goes Fourth type of ending

Forth
Superlative performance from the Lincolnshire Lad.....Of course we all know that Mitchell is a comedic genius but Webb has a future as a great actor.
"We're going to make fun of dementia, until we aren't anymore."
This was a great advert for dignitas.
I live in Spain and they have euthanasia here, I have terminal cancer and am trying to arrange for it tbh. The UK needs to move along with the times.
Fucking hell that was incredibly upsetting
One word: brilliant.
The last time i saw a face so expressive was Nicolle Kidman in Birth. A ridiculously underrated performance.
Heartbreaking
this is genuinely fucking devastating
Well that was heartbreaking.
My mother is currently suffering from dementia. I think this is about the saddest thing I have ever watched.
What if she knows?
@benarielraven David's characters are often at least equally objectionable to Robert's characters, they're more intelligent but more manipulative while Robert's are silly but genuine. In other words sometimes their characters are like Pinky and The Brain, another favorite comedy duo of mine.
robert is especially good at "smarmy." he might in fact be the smarmiest actor of our age
robert webb is good in this.
By Vectron's Noble Brow, that was a heartwrenching sketch.

Wow that last joke really fell flat
Haven't been this disappointed since the ending of Black Adder Goes Fourth.
What was the last joke?
It's a reference to the black adder sketch Mitchell and Webb did, ua-cam.com/video/yhBuCcNjan0/v-deo.html

Where can l find this with laugh track removed?
you can't it was with an audience.
I don't... Get it...? *Single tear*
What does Watson mouth the first time, after saying "Go on, Inspector"? I just barely can't pick it up
Isn’t it just "please"?
Please
What a bummer
Robert looks and sounds like david Walliams in this sketch its uncanny
What happened to david webb?
SOD CANCER.
Major Cinephile I think he's got dementia of some form instead. But yeah, fuck cancer and fuck dementia.
Douglas Mearns its a reference to an the earlier sketch
That is pretty good acting from two comedian of course the flipside ofcomedy is sorrow and screw Google voice recognition does not work
